The Travel weekly revealed last week Virgins plans to send tourists into orbit - sorry if this is old news - I'm just catching up on trade developments!
SpaceShipTwo will carry 6 passengers and two crew and launch from 60000 feet after being carried to that altitude by a new virgin jet aircraft, the WhiteKnightTwo. Seats will cost $200,000 and offers 20 minutes of in-space experience. Clients will train at a luxury hotel for 3 days prior to launch. At 70-80 miles above earth passengers can undo seat belts to experience zero gravity and will descend to 80000 feet with passengers strapped flat to withstand force of gravity on re-entry.
Passengers may wear normal clothes but may experience incontinence on re-entry* They will also have to sign a waiver and supply their own insurance. Flights will begin testing in 2008 and are planned for one flight a day by the end of the first year, two per day by the end of the second.
Flights will initially take off from the Mojave desesrt in Ca before moving to a specially constructed base in New Mexico. 200 people have so far paid $200000 each to fund the first flight and Virgin have 5 spaceships and 2 whiteknights on order.
Virgin frequent Flyer Alan Watts will among the first passengers - he has 2 million flyer miles and plans to travel in 2009.
* I could get the same experience at the local nursing home for less!
