Headed to central virginia in a week and a half. Just started looking at the prices for all the historical sites. WOW! Expensive, when you start adding it all up. Are there any discounts out there for Mt. Vernon, Monticello, Montpelier, etc?

Yes, they are expensive and I don't know of any discounts, except Monticello lets UVA students in for free. I always ask at those sort of places (and museums) if there are any discounts like AAA or Student with ID. Sometimes I luck out.

I wanted to mention that Mt Vernon is totally worth the admission IMO. They have redone the visitor center - it has an awesome museum, movie, gift shop and food court. That combined with the house and grounds- We spent over 6 hours there last Thanksgiving and only left because we were tired. Ditto on Monticello, though their museum is not near as big as Mt. Vernon's.

Montpelier is nice, but you are only going to go through the house and grounds - nothing extra.

Maybe we will just skip Montpelier, and just do the other two. I have been to Mt. Vernon before, but this was the one thing my DS7 asked to do, so we will be going. Never been to Monticello, but have always wanted to go. I was just hoping there was some kind of do it all pass, you know? I do have a question about Mt. Vernon. I noticed there is some kind of cruise added onto a Presidential Pass. Know anything about it?

Mt Vernon is definitely worth it, went last Sept, we got there when it opened and they had to throw us out. We are going to Monticello on Sat (11th) I will post what it was like on Sunday (12th)

Jefferson's Poplar Forest is worth a look. It is just outside Lynchburg. While Jefferson designed Monticello for visitors, Poplar Forest was what he designed as his home. You can see the various areas of restoration.

We did the cruise from Alexandria to Mt. Vernon about 2 years ago and it was great. The price to Mt. Vernon is included in the cruise price. I highly recommend doing it as a way to see more of the city from a different view.

Monticello is great as well. Be prepared for hot weather there.

I've lived here for 4 years and taking in a lot of the sights and sadly, rarely find discounts. But enjoy your trip.

Never been to Mt Vernon, but Monticello is fascinating!! Both the interior, and the grounds. Jefferson had so many inventions he incorporated in the house; it makes for a very interesting tour.

My favorite is his bed. For those going, watch out for Jefferson's bed. It's something that will make you realize what an amazing man he was.
