What is my luggage allowance?

If you are flying with Virgin Atlantic then your allowance is 2 pieces per person, maximum 23kg per piece for all Transatlantic routes, Caribbean, Nigeria and Kenya in Economy, 32kg in Upper Class (that's a maximum of 23kgs per bag and not 46kgs!).

Luggage Allowances from 23 September 2009

From 23 September 2009 Virgin Atlantic's checked in baggage policy will change.

From this date, each piece of luggage you are entitled to take can weigh up to 23 kilograms within your free allowance, across all cabins. Bags exceeding 23kg will incur additional charges up to a maximum weight of 32kg.

Allowances will be as follows:

Flying to USA, Caribbean, Kenya, Nigeria:

Economy 1 x 23 kg
Premium Economy 2 x 23kg
Upper Class 3 x 23kg

All other International destinations

Economy: 1 x 23 kg
Premium Economy 2 x 23kg
Upper Class 3 x 23kg


What if I booked my holiday before 23 September?


If you booked your holiday before 3rd July 2009 for travel after 23rd September 2009, the most generous allowance will still apply. For passengers travelling economy on routes to South Africa, Australia, Asia, Mauritius or Dubai we will increase the allowance to 2 bags so long as the joint weight does not exceed 23kg. If the joint weight exceeds 23kg, excess charges will apply.

This is just great - I will now have well over twice the allowance than now when I fly to Hong Kong in March

It has been posted here and I think the biggest change is that the allowance for PE passengers has been reduced from 2 x 32kg to 2 x 23kg.

I am glad that for US routes economy still has 2 cases x 23kg not going down to 1 like BA has done. I am happy however that the Australia allowence is going up, flying PE then gives you a lot more allowence that previously given.

Ok - after a search through the pages I found this thread so hopefully someone can answer me on this rather than me start a new thread.

We travel with Virgin Atlantic on September 4th in Economy - reading the website and the handbook that comes with our tickets, we are understanding that we are allowed 2 pieces of luggage weighing upto 23kg EACH

As far as I can see, this allowance remains unaffected by the change in policy from Virgin Atlantic effective from September 23rd?ish?

However, our confusion arises from the E-Ticket receipt that came in our ticket package that only says 23kg Baggage Allowance per person. Not the 2x23kg allowance that is stated on the website and in our handbook.

Can anyone shed light upon this? Or is it best that I contact our travel agent incase there has been an error in the E-Ticket receipt.

Any help in greatly appreciated.....

Cheers for that - that is what I see on the website too.

I just figured that it was a bit odd that the E-Ticket Reciept only says 23kg and not 2x23kg. Bloody Virgin!
