We now have enough FF miles for a free companion seat, but I'm wondering if the full fare required for the other seat will make the total any/very much better than two reduced fares. We'll probably be travelling either March or November when the fares have tended to be lowest.

Any experience of this?

I've got two for this year - this month and October. Both times going PE which seems to be the only option where the companion flight makes sense. Total cost for two tickets between £1000 and £1100 (the difference was less than I expected between Jan and Oct)

We've done this a few times, Hil, but only in PE. It's definitely been worthwhile for us. For example, this October we'd been looking at around £750 each for Economy. I couldn't bring myself to pay that, so we started considering other options. We were low on points having wiped ourselves out the previous year by booking free Reward flights. It occurred to us that, whilst neither of us had enough miles to book a Companion round-trip, we did have enough for one leg each. We ended up paying a total of £1300, including taxes, for 2 PE flights.

There's now an option to book Companion flights online, so it's easy to price up and compare. The number of these special category fares is very limited, especially on the Orlando route. For example, they often only allocate two in PE across the entire reward fares range (Reward, Companion, Upgrade). Consequently, it helps if you're able to book early and be flexible with dates. Several times, we haven't been able to secure our first choice of dates, but with perserverance and a willing Flying Club agent, we've been able to get the discounted fares.

Thanks, both. I don't think we'd use the miles for PE (I'm sure we'd never want to go economy again if we did!).

Hi Deb - where can you book these online? I haven't been able to find an option to do this :confused3

Sorry, I think I've got my wires crossed. What you can do is search by 'lowest' fares. Although the price you pay for the cost flight is usually a bit more than that when booking a Companion flight, in my experience, it's never anywhere near the fully flexible fare.

Thanks, Deb. I thought I was missing something!
