VIP Tour in January

I am planning a trip to Orlando in January the week of my birthday. I'm trying to find someone to go with me, but with it being so soon after Christmas, it's looking like I'll be by myself, which isn't a big deal. I like to travel by myself and had a blast at Disneyland alone in May.

Anyway, the days I am planning at UO/IOA are Jan 14-15: all day on Wednesday the 14th and the morning through after lunch on Thursday. Right now the plan is to stay at one of the deluxe hotels Wednesday night, so I would be eligible for early entry and the express pass.

I'm considering doing the VIP Tour on Wednesday for a few reasons: 1) skipping lines especially in the Harry Potter areas, 2) backstage stuff/learning from the tour guide, 3) not being by myself for a little while, and 4) it's my birthday and I want to do something special. On the other hand, the crowds are supposed to be very light (touring plans has both days at 1 and undercover tourist has both as green).

Given all that, would the VIP Tour be worth it or a colossal waste of money? If I do the tour, should I stay at a cheaper hotel and not worry about getting express pass? Thursday morning would basically be just focusing on anything I wanted to repeat from Wednesday. If the money isn't really an issue, what would you do?

Hi! I haven't actually been on the tour so I can't comment on that but I came across your question after searching for info on the VIP tour. My husband and I are going to universal October 2015 and I'm definitely going to book the tour for us, even though we're staying at the Hard Rock. Reasons being I love the idea of going on so many attractions without waiting at all, including Harry Potter and you also get the behind the scenes info and awesome photo ops. Being from Australia this will prob be our only visit so I'm willing to splurge to make the experience as memorable as possible and being your birthday, I think you should do the same thing!
