My DW and I have been going to DW every year, since we were dating in college. Every time we go my sister in-law and my parents in-law make fun of us. They think we are “nerds” for going to DW- “a place for kids”. They always ask us “why are you guys always going, you just went last year.”


WARNING - Irony Ahead. Every year on the week of the 4th of July. My wife’s family, along with my DW and myself, go to the same lake in Branson, Mo, stay at the same cabin, eat at that same restaurants, and play the same card games every night. They have been doing this for 30 years plus and unfortunately there does not appear to be an end in sight. I love my in-laws, but this trip is not what I consider an ideal vacation. However, my father in-law, a good guy, pays for the trip, so we can’t complain.


Anyways my in-laws (sis-in law, husband, child) have finally gone to Disney and they loved it. Note the only reason they went is that is was a paid trip through her husband’s work. We just talked to them last week and they went on and on, about how nice it is. They couldn’t believe how much stuff there was to do. They went for a three day weekend and didn’t get to do a quarter of what they wanted to do. Not to mention, the stuff they do not know about. Well, they didn’t apologize for making fun of us for all these years, but all they said is they want to go back. They said that next time they go they are going to have to stay for at least a week. Now my parent’s in-law are excited about going, apparently my wife’s enthusiasm wasn’t enough (since we have been telling them that we should all go for years now). I doubt the summer lake vacation will be washed away, but I think we will be planning a family DW trip for sometime in 06.

My wife and I had gone since 1998 and we were always stared at when at the parks while getting in line for a character autograph. They would ask "where is your child?" and we'd say "we're the children." LoL

Woo Hoo! I'm so glad for you. We pray and pray that the in laws (DH's family) will want to do Disney together. Until then we will be stuck at the lake for a week in June. We just want to go to the beach or Disney - not a freaking lake. Don't see the appeal. Also they have picked a house this year that only has 2 freaking bathrooms - for 3 families, a total of 9 people. Actually that is sort of misleading because 1 of the bathrooms is in the master suite and DH's brother and his wife get that room because they have a baby. So that leaves the one other bathroom for the 6 of us. Jeez

We just want to go to the beach or Disney - not a freaking lake. Don't see the appeal.

AMEN, my brother. I love the water, I lived by the beach my whole life. But I just don't get the lake thing for a whole week. The trip consist of my parents in-law trying to get all the kids (all in thier 20s and early 30s) to go water skiing, tubing, etc., like they have for the last 20 years. However, nobody really wants to anymore. So all we do is boat around and sit in the water. Considering my in-laws moved to the Florida 5 years ago and live less then a mile from some of the most beautfiul beaches in the world. I just don't get driving 14 hours to go to "The lake". I guess I have come to except this as a family tradition and have told my wife, once we have kids we may have to start a new tradition.

AMEN, my brother. I love the water, I lived by the beach my whole life. But I just don't get the lake thing for a whole week. Yep, boating around and sitting in the water is what it is. They think boating is the end all. I have never been partial to boating. I am extremely clumsy, so skiing is completely out of the question. Also extremely fair skinned, so the week is mainly me putting on sunscreen. Picture a Simpsons type montage - me putting on spray, me putting on lotion, me using the stick, the towelettes, spf 30, spf 50 (but only until something stronger is invented), me doing the same to DD, over and over all week. At the beach we get a gigantic umbrella and I am the happiest camper (although still heavily coated with sunscreen).

Are you made to suffer through endless rounds of board games, too? That's the worst! And god forbid it should rain.
The entire week is mostly DH and his brother trying to one up each other - who can do something better, faster, with more expensive equipment. Jeez.
I did forbid DH to ski this year. His knee has been bothering him alot this year and I don't want to drag his behind to an emergency room - what with none being really near to the Lake in the freaking outlands of Virginia.

Wait a minute!! Your in laws live in FLORIDA and they want to drive 14 hours to a freaking lake in Missouri? Yep, they are bonkers! I love Florida. It is my singular goal in life to live in Florida again and near the ocean. I'm so sorry for you. Perhaps they will see the appeal of going to Disney every year - I will cross my fingers for you!!

Sounds like they could be near my neck of the woods? I live in Panama City, across the bridge from Panama City Beach "Home of the World's Most Beautiful Beaches". But that is their slogan, not necessarily mine. They could be further west of us too.

But I'm with you, I sure wouldn't want to drive 14 hours to MO, if I could go 6-7 hours down to Disney.

Looks like family vacations may take a turn for the better. I only wish this revelation would happen in my family. However, I really don't mind if they continue to let me have all the fun. I can take the jokes. I'm happy for you and yours and hope you have a "magical gathering" in your near future.
