We stayed in a dedicated 2br at The Villas at Wilderness Lodge from 9/12 – 9/19.
We are returning in January for six nights in a 1br, and three nights Poly Concierge, but now I sort of wish all nine nights were at VWL.

The Resort:
It was simply breathtaking….more beautiful than the Lodge itself,. Just visiting the quiet pool area and looking up at the Villas is honestly an E-Ticket attraction in itself. At the Member Update that I attended, the guide that ran the meeting said that VWL is now the most demanded resort for return visits on the property (it was unclear if he was taking about just DVC’s, or all resorts). Please visit The Villas in person, as pictures do not even come close to represent the beauty and grandeur of this resort.

The Room & View:
We had a dedicated 2br, room #5552. It was a hike from the 5th floor elevators to this room, but we are all in good physical shape, so it was not a big deal.

The room was on the side with the busses, but they were in the distance, and we really didn’t notice them unless we tried. The room did have a partial dumpster view. From the main balcony, if you looked to the left you could see the dumpster and work area, but only a small part of the actual dumpster. The studio portion balcony was more in line with the actual dumpster. About 2/3 – 3/4 of the view was of grasslands, woods, and when looking to the right, a beautiful view of both The Villas and The Main Lodge. I was pleased with the view….dumpster and all.

The master bedroom had an awesome vaulted ceiling that really added to the lodge feel. In the living room area, there was also a little vaulting. Does that make sense?

This was also an open balcony room.

While we love the interior dark woods and robust colors of VWL, I can understand how some would prefer the “light & airy” colors offered at other DVC’s

Condition & Cleanliness of Room:
This was the weak point.
The room furniture had several noticeable chips and scrapes. I think it could be touched up very easily and inexpensively. The arms on the dining chairs scrape the underside of the table when pushed in. This causes bad scrapes on the chair arms. Chips were noticed on all furniture, including kitchen cabinets. I would like to get my hands on the people who abuse a place like that.

I also wondered a little bit about the door handles. Some were silver, and some were a dark matte finish. It didn’t bother me, as both looked very nice. It just did not look uniform.

Housekeeping (called Lodgekeeping at VWL), was weak at best. The floors were dirty (wife swept a pile of dirt to show housekeeping), half eaten candy bars found on un vacuumed carpets (wife steeped in it while showing head housekeeper dirty carpets), crumbs in the chair cushions, food stuck on the front area of the breakfast bar, ¼ inch of crumbs in the toaster (still left after two full cleanings), Stains on towels, no replenishment of toilet paper, or Tide after full cleaning, did not take out our garbage (again, on full cleaning), and to top it off, on check out day I was shaking the bed comforter to check for anything I may have left, and I noticed a urine stain on the back side of the bedspread.

Staff & Courtesy:
Superb. They took the time to address the Lodgekeeping issues, and were great at taking care of things. They really displayed a terrific “Disney” attitude.

Amenities:
All top notch. Pool, hot tub, Sturdy Branches exercise room were all superb.

Transportation:
We had a car, so I can not comment on the bus system. The boats were a slight inconvenience going five feet from WL dock, to then to FW before coming back to WL.

Summary:
If Lodgekeeping was taken out of the equation, this would be paradise times ten. I honestly believe that Lodgekeeping is generally top notch, and I just got an “off day” (or days).

If you have not seen and walked around VWL, I suggest you do so on your next trip…you will not be sorry!

WE LOVED IT AND CAN’T WAIT TO GO BACK TO VWL!!!

I will be happy to answer any questions...

EDIT: PS- Front desk gave one weak "Welcome Home" upon check-in, but every security guard gave a hearty one every time we drove through the gate. Maybe the guards should train the resort staff...;)

I agree that the VWL pictures do not do this resort justice. It is much lovlier in person!

However, I am concerned by another report of housekeeping leaving a lot to be desired.

Maistre Gracey when will you be there in January?

We will be there from 1/21 to 1/31. I was so excited reading the first part of your report. We have visited the Wilderness Lodge for lunch every year for at least the past five years. One year we took the tour of the lodge and they ended it at VWL with a soft "if your interested, take a DVC tour" but we didn't at that time.

We toured DVC in March 2002 (finally after 8 years I convinced DBF! :p ) and we were ready to purchase BCV when DBF expressed a disappointment that we didn't buy when VWL was being sold. (we still would have bought anyway) HAPPILY our guide came back with the amount of points we wanted for VWL and offered them to us. It probably helped that we only wanted 150.

Long story short I have to pinch myself every time I think that I'm going to be spending 10 days at our favorite resort, where I NEVER thought we would.

I am a little concerned with your report about lodgekeeping though! Ewww! Did they have comment cards for you to fill out? A little wear and tear wouldn't bother me, but dirt (candybars) and stains would freak me out!

Thanks so much for your report!

We too can't wait to go, but I am a little bothered at the condition you found your room in. I'm just wondering, did they ever offer to move you to another room or did they send someone in to clean up?

Annie & melk, I am not overly concerned about the lodgekeeping fiasco. I believe that I just got the short straw when it comes to housekeepers.

Please go and enjoy your trip. I spent alot of this trip comparing all DVC's inside and out (exept HH), and it is my opinion that VWL is the most spectacular of them all. Don't get me wrong...all DVC's are awesome in there own way, but the fact is that the "wilderness" lends itself to heavier theming.

Annie, I will be at the Poly 1/29 -2/1, and VWL 2/1 - 2/7. I am sorry that I will miss you!

Maistre Gracey...thanks for the report on VWL. You've managed to make me very homesick! ;)

And as much as we really, really enjoy VWL, I'm glad you were objective in pointing out the good and bad that you found there. When we stayed there in May, we found our room to be in pretty good condition and lodgekeeping was very good.

After a hectic day in the parks, VWL is a great haven, isn't it. And I love your line:

Just visiting the quiet pool area and looking up at the Villas is honestly an E-Ticket attraction in itself.

Glad you had a great trip, and didn't let the small stuff bug you too much. Thanks again for the report.:)

Maistre Gracey,

Glad you enjoyed your trip home. Sorry about the poor mousekeeping but I am glad it did not ruin your trip. Hopefully, next time your experience will be a perfect 10!

Anniet,

We will be at VWL from 1/26-2/1 - we'll have our lime green ribbons on so be sure to look for us and say hi!!

Just for those worried about the upkeep of the rooms....when we were there in Jan. our 1br was spotless. As the original poster said, it just seems like they got the bottom of the barrel as far as housekeepers go. We had a similar "not quite there" experience at BWV just after our perfect VWL stay....I really think that certain housekeepers just really need to be shown what "clean" really means! I'd say the majority of them are great though!

The maintenance issues as far as scraped up furniture, etc...may also be due to a less attentive housekeeper. If they don't report things they find wrong when they're tending to a room, then they probably won't get fixed until a guest notices a whole bunch of things at once.

Thanks for the great review. I also found the welcoom home if you got one at VWL check were weak and oh I have to do this. The guards and others over in the villas do a great job at it. I agree some housekeeping/lodgekeeping staff do need reminding. I also believe that when we report things like scrapes on chairs and stuff make sure it gets repaired early. Glad you had a great time.

Maistre Gracey

Got to agree with you on the guard (Jack .. I think), every time we drove thro the gate, we always got a great "Welcome Home"

Must get round to booking our next trip. :D

David :D

4 Days till get to go home again, can't wait, your trip report just has me even more excited, this will be our second trip Home, and the third is coming up in January!!

Great trip report.

Thank you for taking the time to post and share it.

Best regards,
Shontell

Thanks for the post! To save points this last time, we did our weekend nights at the Poly concierge (after 5 nights at BWV) and then 2 nights VWL 2BR, instead of 4 nights in a 1BR. We wished we had stayed all 4 at VWL and bought more points there later! We Were in 5556, and it IS a haul, but it's so nice there.
