Villains Fans - Why?

There are a huge number of fans of the Disney Villains. The success of the last Villains Unleashed and the repeat of the same is all the proof you need.

I have never understood this. After all, they're the bad guys. You aren't supposed to like them.

I can understand liking the "anti-heroes" such as Capt. Jack, and, in other non-Disney media, Vic Mackey from The Shield. After all, the show is built around those characters. But, in the Disney movies, you are clearly suppose to despise the villains.

So, fans of Disney villains, what is it about them that makes you like them? (I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just trying to understand).

For me, I love Hades. I loved his lines in the movie--hilarious! "You look like a fate worse than death." And it was a compliment. Because, you know, they were the Fates.

I know that I pull for hero/heroine, but the villains can be highly entertaining.

The Villains make the story. Without them the hero/heroine has nothing to do. Each Villain has a back story that makes them who they are. In the eyes of the villains they are not really villains. I could go on.

I agree completely. Similar to how in reality most "bad people" had something that got them there. Disney is great at "humanizing" their villains, and in some way making them just as relatable as the heroes/heroines.

This isn't relegated to Disney people, people have always loved villains; Darth Vader, the Joker, Hannibal Lecter. We may not always want the villain to win, but that doesn't mean we don't like them. Villains can be just as interesting and likable as heroes. It has often been said that a hero is only as good as his/her villain.

Exactly... Heroes/Heroines are kinda boring. Disney villains are fun, exciting, and you enjoy watching their ultimate downfall.

For example, the evil "steps" from Cinderella are really fun to watch because they are totally clueless. I don't want them to "win" (and I don't want to see them as real people), but I can't stop watching their antics and laughing. Ursula is another example of a character that is just riveting in her evilness.

It's evil you can enjoy without worrying about real life.

Villains frequently have the most complex personalities and backstories. They also tend to have some of the best lines/songs. They create the conflict that makes the story. There is more creativity in making the right villain than the right hero for a story IMHO.

Maybe this is why I don't get it. I like boring. Seriously, imagine the personality of Bert from Sesame Street. That's me (minus the hair--I'd kill for Bert's hair).

A truly great villain just makes the story so much better. The more evil the villain the more we believe they will stop at nothing to destroy our hero, the more suspense that is created as we wonder how our hero can possibly succeed. And quite often they have the best lines.

I feel like they're just the ones that are a little more bad asss and have some serious sass to them, they've got personality and aren't afraid to do whatever they want! I was more for Esmerelda & Meg as a kid because they had more to them, that rough streak that made them more interesting of a character than a regular princess, and the villains have even more than that.

They're allowed to have attitude, they have some of the best lines of the movie, the villains songs are usually my favourite,
As for meeting them, they're always more entertaining, holding a conversation with a Tremaine is going to have me dying vs a simple talk with a princess.

See, I can't stand those characters. I know they have their fans, but I never have met one. I really have never understood the Darth Goofy costume for Goofy. Why dress up a Disney character as someone who murders children?

I guess this is ultimately going to be like asking why someone likes vanilla over chocolate. Just accept it and move on.

As for the question about villains in many cases the cause of their villainous ways is often the most interesting point of the story for me. Or sometimes I am not enamored with the hero. I rooted for Jaws to eat everyone.

Some of them are hysterically funny, other are just bad a** and fabulous, sometimes I actually am more entertained by them than the main character - my favorite of all time is Madame Medusa - that whole scene where she is on the phone yelling at Snoops about "bottles!" is just hilarious Also, they way she dresses, plucks out her eye lashes - she is just crazy over the top and highly entertaining! Malifenct is far more interesting and intriguing to me than Aurora (although, sorry, hated the Angelina Jolie movie ) I think they over all just get better lines and one liners. As far as the whole villains bash thing, that may be in part because we can never see them at the parks unless its something special, where princesses are in abundance? Just a thought. I went (or tried) to go to the original bash last year and it was such an over-packed unorganized nightmare that we ended up leaving and going to epcot... but that's a different thread...
