Viking River Cruises

Balcony/Verandah are the same but on River Boats there is no such thing as a 'real' balcony. They have what they call 'Juliet balconies' and you really can't step out on to them..rather like a sliding door with a small overhang. They would never get through the locks if they had the traditional sized balcony not to mention narrow parts of the rivers they cruise. :)

Actually, the boats used on the tour that the OP is looking at have both balconies where you can basically stand (if that) and verandahs (which are big enough for chairs). So, you are incorrect to say that there is no such thing as a "real" balcony on River Boats.

OP - for me, if I were going to pay for a balcony at all, I'd want one that I can sit on. However, it depends how much daytime cruising the itinerary has (and the price difference between the two rooms).

My inlaws have taken a Viking River Cruise...I know they booked another one as soon as they got back--can't remember if they've already gone on that second and are waiting on their third? I know they LOVED it!

On some vessels yes, there is enough room for 2 small chairs, the 'balcony' is just wide enough. My point really was it's not what most cruisers would think of as a true balcony. Adequate yes and certainly nice. But very small.

You said that balcony and verandah are the same thing. On this cruise line, they are not - they are two separate categories and represent different options (hence the OP's question about whether or not it is worthwhile to go with a verandah cabin over a balcony cabin).

Yes, you're right. Upon re-reading, I skimmed the post not reading properly and didn't even look at the ship she was considering. I responded to what I thought was a more 'in general' question when in fact, it was specific.

I found out that some Viking ships only have balconies and the new ones that came out in 2012 have verandahs. I found out that the difference in sq footage is major for only a couple hundred more pp. Balconies have approx 130 sq ft and verandah staterooms have 205. I think we're booking tomorrow.
