I finally upgraded my 10-year-old camcorder to a Canon HD this year, and also bought a basic 'GlideCam' stabiliser grip, and shot lots of footage at POR and POFQ for my site. The Glidecam really needs some more practice as the unit has a tendency to wander and 'bob' a bit, but I was starting to get the hang of it after a while and it really helps the smoothness of the footage while walking around.

Here's a quick edit of a couple of the shots to see what people think - warning, this is a 90Mb 960x540 30p WMV file from a HD source, I haven't quite worked out how to best optimise the settings yet: http://www.portorleans.org/videos/po...nsorg_test.wmv

Another coding attempt which I think is much better. Same filesize, but this one is higher rez at 1280x720 30p MP4: http://www.portorleans.org/videos/po...nsorg_test.mp4

Let me know how they play for you.

I've also tried uploading them both to YouTube, at http://www.youtube.com/portorleansfan - again, let me know what you think.

I'd stick with the WMV. It was clear, smooth, and crisp. I ran it on Media Player of coarse.

The MP4 was choppy with a bit of a lag. I ran it on both Quicktime and RealPlayer.

All 3 programs are set at the default settings which I'm sure most of the people visiting your site would still be at.

Thanks for that, was that having downloaded the whole file version and then playing it locally, or streaming the YouTube version? I doubt the file version will stream as my hosting server probably won't send the data fast enough.

Andre,

I watched it on Youtube and am very peased with the quaility. I can almost smell the wonderful scent from the lobby! :thumbsup2

I ran both locally, downloaded them both to my desktop.

Youtube looks great in both regular and HD

I think what I'll do is post youtube HD versions for general viewing, and a high quality MP4 version for downloading from my site. Might try another test later, stay tuned...

If bandwidth isn't an issue, MP4 can be nicer because of portable media players using that as the media of choice. WMV gives you more bang for the buck letting you do the same quality video at a much smaller file size.
