I am applying for a grant for the library. Video game (thinking Wii) and games to keep the teens and twens occupied after school. Preference would be active games that makes the whole body move that can be played with a group.

Any ideas?

XBOX Kinect. system is extremely popular with tweens and teens at Give Kids The World. especially Dance central and Kinect Adventures.

XBox 360 with Microsoft Kinect. It is still early in the life cycle but in a short time it will blow anything available on the Wii out of the water.

the sports package that comes with most new Wii systems can certainly get you up and moving. all the sports get you on your feet, but boxing has left me with tender arms and back on more than one occasion. a decent plan for movement, if not a work out. (my in laws actually have Wii sports teams at their retirement community for exercise.)

another good one is "just dance" - teens love it, especially the girls, and with it you are up and burning some calories.

While I would recommend Wii Fit, part of me is wondering if the library would be better off putting this money towards programs related to literacy. Guest speakers like kids authors could conduct workshops similar to those provided at schools. Book clubs or computer clubs could also be formed. Personally, I would much rather this type of activity take place in my library then sticking them in front of a video game. Just my thoughts. :)

On the flip side, I do want to mention that I think it is great that the library is coming up with activities to keep the kids off of the streets and in a great environment. :)

The Wii is great but with the Kinect you don't have to worry about kids not using the safety straps on the controllers since there are no controllers. We have both and for getting up and moving my kids, and I, prefer the Kinect. We only have a few games but the Kinect Sports is a lot of fun and we have friendly competitions.

Books about video games!
