Via Napoli-> Which pizza taste more like NY pizza (wood fired)?

If you ever had pizza up in New Haven CT at Pepe's http://www.pepespizzeria.com/ it is like Via Napoli's. My DH grew up eating Pepe's and was pleasantly surprised when we first tried Via Napoli. We love love it there and has been the most consistently good restaurant we have eaten on WDW property.

The mezzo metro was too big for us to finish. My mom, me, DH, & two boys.

I live very close to Pepe's. Had lunch there this past Sunday. Been hundreds of times. While I wouldn't put Via Napoli on that level, it is certainly in that "style". I just wish that they would char their pies the way Pepe's does. Generally, if you like Pepe's, Sally's, Modern, (all in New Haven); Lombardi's, Grimaldi's and Di Fara (in New York); Blanco (in Phoenix) or Mozza (in Los Angeles), you will find Via Napoli to be in the same style. Now if they would only add a white clam pie to their menu!

There is a counter service window at Via Napoli. It is not open all the time (they seem to open it during times when high crowds are expected) and it does not serve the same pizza as you get inside the restaurant. I must say I have never seen anyone post that they have used the dining plan at the window.

Pepe's in New Haven (Coal-burning) is still my favorite though with da Michele in Naples a close 2nd.

Same here, with Pepe's now scattered around Fairfield County no more two hour waits on Saturday nights!

JimmyV, the Blue Zoo used to do a very nice white clam flatbread that was in Pepe's league...but alas no more.

And, therein, lies my biggest complaint about the pizza we had at Via Napoli. What is the point of cooking pizza in a real oven if not for the char? I wonder if I shouldn't have ordered my pizza well done? :rotfl:

I always order my pizza well done. I know it sounds odd, but I usually get it just the way I like it that way- bubbly cheese and nice char.

Lifetime NYer here, and I tried to eat Disney Pizza one year during a tropical storm when they closed the parks...but alas, between three people, we couldn't get 1 slice finished:confused:...so we gave it to the mouse keeping staff...

That said, I think the pizza at Wolfgang Puck Express is very edible!...The pesto and vegetable one being quite yummy!

Haven't had Via Napoli...I LOVE Roman style pizza, but Neapolitan is not particularly attractive to me, as great pizza is so readily available to me.

The photos I have seen do look very authentic to me, but Florida's soft water generally makes an enormous difference in the bread products produced there, as here in NY, we like our water chunky!:cool2:

They claim that the water used at Via Napoli is identical in composition (or as nearly as possible) to the water in Naples, thus making the dough authentic. Can't attest to that, but the dough is good. Just wish they would burn it!:rotfl2:

I really like Roman pizza, but honestly have never had a decent one stateside.

The people that run Via Napoli also run the place that's in the Metlife building.

I just have to say that I'm Italian and have lived in NY all of my 42 years and the only time in my life that I had wood fire cooked pizza was in Disney World. Pizza in Florida will NEVER be like NY because of the water. There is a pizza place in West Palm Beach that has great pizza because they bring NY water down by the tankerful for making their pizza dough.

If you want pizza that tastes like it's from NY, come to NY or go to West Palm while you're in FL :)

For people who aren't used to it and don't expect it, they can be put off by the char on a wood/coal oven pie.

When I first introduced my wife to Pepe's she would always complain about how the pizza was burnt, and would request that we get our pizza from some other establishment. Thankfully, she's now come around, and always mentions how Pepe's "really is the best pizza," char and all.

Me, too! Been eating at Pepe's my whole life (literally). While I didn't expect Via Napoli to be exactly the same, I did miss the char! Again, if we order pizza when we go next time, maybe I'll ask for it well-done.

Yeah!! Another convert!

I have to wonder if that does not have something to do with the various complaints I have seen that said "I sent the pizza back because it was burnt." Maybe they're using less cooking time to prevent having pizza sent back because a lot of guests aren't liking the char, and it's not a question of what type of fuel they use for the oven.
In other words, it's been "Epcotted."

This thread just makes me hungry for Pepe's....I think I'll go tommorrow:banana:

We hit the Danbury location this past Sunday and were munching on some clam pie leftovers last night...what can be better than Pepe's...oh, when your BIL treats because we gave him six nights at BWV...Disney magic spreads to Pepe's!!!

Will they look at me funny if I request the pizza "well done" at my upcoming trip? I'm all about the char!! :cool2:

My husband grew up eating at Pepe's and has not been back since we left CT 10 years ago. But there are others now, he does not know, he will be absolutely thrilled when I surprise him the next time we visit family in the Danbury area :)
