Frankly, I'd bite the bullet and pay cash for a room. I think your chances of getting VGC with points at any time of year for a dream stay are pretty much nil. Life is short and you have enough free cash to buy DVC, so you aren't broke. (If you luck into the reservation, you can cancel the cash stay)
Rent out your points to cover SOME of the cost (you'll have to juggle points around if you want to try for the seven month reservation - I'd do the reservation early in your use year if you are going to do that for max flexibility in renting them if using them yourself falls through). Your Mom won't know about the cash outlay (my parents were convinced we paid for six people to CRUISE with points.)

I wasn't planning on giving or selling any points. I use ALL of my points for me!! But, I might be willing to try this. We often go to Vero Beach for a few days in December, and I don't need to do the 7-month, 5AM wakeup call for that. The thinking is, I book something at VGC, I, out of the goodness of my heart, cancel that reservation at like 9PM West Coast time a few days after the 7-month mark, and maybe there is a lucky soul who grabs that reservation a couple minutes later. (Actually, I have a two-night reservation in late October that I might need to cancel. If so, I could be convinced to cancel at an agreed-upon date and time. I don't want to rent out my points or my reservation. I haven't gone there, and don't plan to.)
