Very short for his age

My son will be 22 next week. He is probably about 5 foot 4. It does bother him sometimes. He is often mistaken for younger than his 19 year old sister who is 5 foot 9. I am 5 foot 7 and my dh is about 5 foot 11.

You're welcome! I've done this before. Thei stores sells top name brands so the jeans are pricey, but have a great fit. This is from their website:

We have been into Buckle plenty of times, so I do know how much the jeans are but it would be worth it if she can get free alterations!

I had a cousin who was short. He entered high school and was only 4 feet tall. The doctor kept saying he'd have a growth spurt. For some other reason, they had to go see a different doctor, who was somewhat alarmed at his height and asked for his growth chart. When she got it and saw he had essentially stopped growing in the 4th grade, she sent him to specialist. I can't remember what the diagnosis was, but there was something wrong and without growth hormones, he would have never grown again. He ended up being 5'6", which is about right, IMO, for his part of the family tree.

I found an online tutorial and had my mom shorten a pair of DD13's jeans in the same manner- you keep the original hem so you can't tell that they have been "hemmed". My mom is a great seamstress so she was able to figure it out. Nothing worse than a homemade hem ;) I have also figured out that Miss Me size 26 will almost always fit her so I have bought them second hand on eBay with the professional Buckle hemming already done. Maurice's has a X-Short length with an inseam of 28. Now she is all into skinny jeans which is pretty nice because instead of dragging under her shoes, longer jeans just bunch at the ankles and you don't have to worry so much about inseam.

DD13 is 5'1" and at 3 years into puberty, I'm guessing that is about it. DD16 was over the top of the charts in height as a baby/toddler, and DD13 ran 5%-50% at the most. DD16 is my height (5'7") or a bit more. DD13 doesn't *usually* mind being shorter than everyone. I kind of like having a kid that is still kind of little and cute...

I do think it is much harder for the boys to be small. And there is a girl here in 6th grade who is around 6' and that is hard for her too.

Ooh but isn't that negligent from the doctor that there was no testing done on growth hormones before? He was 14 when he was 4' tall? My ds is also very short but checked on a regularly basis and that includes testing for GH... Or maybe it wass different back then...

Well to me your youngest dd doesn't sound short, my ds is a foot shorter :-) Are there nokids shorter than her? She's only 13, I'd expect she'll grow some more.

I tell her "God only lets us grow till we reach perfection, Some just reach it faster than others"

Oooh that is really well said!!!

She got mistaken for a kindergarten student when she was in year 3...THAT did not go down well....lol

How old was she then? My ds still gets mistaken for a kindergartner at 13...

My kids have 2 brothers who are little. One brother is 13 and in a size 10, the younger brother who's 9 is in a size 6/7. My 9 yr old is in a size 12/14 and my 6 yr old is in a 7/8. I know my kids are on the taller size and are estimated to grow to be about 6' tall. I really do hope their friends have a major late growth spurt other wise I dont even know they'll be as tall as me and I'm only 5'3.
Oh well my ds is 13 and in a size 6,so in comparison these boys are tall :-) How tall are your kids then sounds like they're really tall already...

They are 11 and 6 years old. My 6 year old definitely stands out as the tallest. She is in Kindergarten and has a lot of tiny classmates. My 5th grader is seeing girls catch up to her now. The boys are catching up slower than the girls.

I would recommend anyone with smaller kids to try to get them to play soccer. The shorter kids seem to do better than the taller ones in that sport, at least from what I've seen first hand. I could be wrong, but that is what I've witnessed. Any soccer players that can confirm this?
Sadly ds is not into sports ar all... So soccer will be nothing for him... If your girls are in 5th grade and kindergarten I imagine they stand out, but if think your oldest dd will prefer being 5'4" over 4' :-)

For girls, they usually stop growing a year or so after their first period, so if it's been three years, she is probably done. Dd14 is probably a year or so away from getting her first period, so even if she's only 5', she still had hope.

She was about 8...she is now 18 and gets mistaken for a 14 yr old, she has finished school now and gets asked all the time, why isn't she in school...lol

Not as extreme as mine then. I can imagine it's annoying poeple think she's younger, but I'm sure that in a few years she'll be happy about it :-)

Sounds like you are testing for GH which must be coming back okay ... are they also checking bone age?

If things look "normal" are the doctors just calling it a constitutional delay of growth and puberty?

Of course, there are ways to "kick start" the process and would think your son approaching age 14 (when most boys have already started puberty and your son is starting to be bothered by the difference) could be a good candidate. An easy change to make is to really increase the daily caloric intake, such as supplemental nutritional drinks twice a day, as the extra body weight is needed for the body to grow.

My DD16 is 5 foot tall and when she was 12 her height bothered her so much I took her to have her wrist scanned and apparently they can predict height etc. At the time she was around 4 feet 5. The Doctor predicted her height to be between 5 foot and 5 foot 1. She was thrilled to break 5 feet and the test was super accurate for us....

yes they checked bone age which is much younger than his age. So you could call it constitutional delay of growth and puberty. You really think you can kick start the process by increasing caloric intake? I have heard that weight is important for girls starting puberty, but not for boys...

Ds is very skinny and eats like a bird...

Seeing you say he is very skinny, seems it would be the place they would start before considering any meds. Keeping a food journal to see how many calories he is getting each day then determining ways to easily up his intake ... store bought nutritional drinks, milkshakes made with half-n-half or whipping cream, etc. Then back for peroidic weight checks on the same scale.

That's gotta be tough especially when his family is tall.

Nope not that extreme..lol...I keep telling her it is good to look younger than you actually are and yes in a few yrs, she will hoping to look younger....But she is 18 and wants to look 18, she has just started going out to night clubs and according to her "there is nothing worse than going to a night club and have ppl think you are 14, getting hit up for ID every 5 minutes and having guys think you are too young to dance with" ....lol...she is not impressed with it at all...lol
