First, let me say thank you for all your kind thoughts. Of course, news of the accident and a horrible picture were spread across the front of the paper this morning. It was much too painful for me to see. There is some positive news. The young driver did not die as we were told yesterday afternoon. He was removed from the ventilator and began breathing on his own. He has a long road ahead of him. Xavier's funeral will be Saturday. I will be attending and am sure it will be most difficult. Again, thank you for listening.

Hi guys. I have been lurking a lot lately, but posting not too much. When I got to school today, I was told that a former student of mine had been killed in a car accident last night. He was very young-only 15. I adored this student. He wasn't the brightest, didn't come from the best home, and wasn't what many teachers would call their favorite. However, he was mine. I have been teaching at the same school for 20 years. We are a small school of 450 in a very close knit neighborhood. I have had the heaviest heart today. Xavier brightened the room with his smile and laugh. He talked 90 miles an hour and was just the sweetest kid. He was full of mischief and could drive a person nuts, but he was so special. He was the passenger in the car and the force of the impact killed him instantly. The driver was 16 years old and was lifeflighted to an Atlanta hospital. He died this afternoon. To make it even more tragic, the other truck involved was driven by the grandfather of one our students now. I also taught Xavier's sisters and cousins. His one older sister just loved my class so much. I'm just at a lost. I can't believe that room brightening smile is gone forever. Teachers aren't supposed to outlive their students. :( Thanks for listening.

Thank you. I knew I could turn to my friends here on the DIS for understanding.

Oh how sad for everyone involved, including his old teachers!

And how wonderful to know how much he WAS loved by one of his old teachers. Comforting *hugs*....I know it's not much. :(

I'm so sorry about your student. I know what you are going through. I lost one of my 2nd graders one year. It is very hard. Hugs to you and your students.

So very sad!!! Sincere condolences:hug:

Thank you all so much. You have been a comfort.

I'm so sorry. I know what it does to a school to lose a student. Sending you some strength for the next few days.

That is so sad, Melanie. :( Children sould not die. So sad. A hug  for you, prayers for their families.

This is just too weird. I just signed up here today, and from 60000 members, the most tragic thing I've read here yet comes from someone in my own hometown. :(

Melanie, the prayers of this sinner, such as they are, go out for you and the families of your young friends. May you all soon be comforted. :D

From one UGA dawg to another, here's a {hug}.

Melanie, I can't imagine how awful this feels. {{{Hugs}}} to you in getting through the days ahead.
