She does not like spicy or saucy anything (I know, she's a freak) but I am not missing Ohana. Will they let her order off of the kid's menu with DS or is there a different option?

She will be charged the adult "per head" price. There is not really a kids menu, per say. The kids eat the same thing that the adults eat. It's all brought to your table. The only way they won't charge her the adult price is if she doesn't eat one thing and just sits there watching everyone else eat.

I don't remember any type of sauce on the steak when we were there. Will she eat that? Also, our DS2 was able to get a bowl of plain steamed broccoli. Does she eat veggies? Maybe the chef would prepare something like that for her.

None of the meats have sauce on them nor are they really spicy. There are wonderful dipping sauces(especially the peanut! Yum) but they are served on the side. DD could just eat the meats w/o the sauces. There are also wonderful fried wontons w/o sauce, a good salad and wonderful fresh pineapple slices w/carmel dipping sauce. Now I am hungry! LOL!

The meal is served family style, and everything is endlessly refillable. One of the things they bring to your table is a bowl of steamed veggies. I think it had a broccoli-cauliflower blend, and it had no spices at all. There was also a bowl of rice that was similar to fried rice, but was also not spicy. I am pretty sure there was bread too. Overall, the meats are not spicy, but you are served bowls of sauces to dip in. (ok, drooling now while thinking about that yummy peanut sauce...) The shrimp might have had some spice on it, but the steak, and pork just had salt and maybe pepper on them. The chicken was a bit peppery, but overall there wasn't anything I would call *spicy* just salt and pepper. The pineapple rings and caramel sauce are so good too. Can't remember now, were we served a salad too? Don't worry, noone should go hungry. In another thread it was menioned that someone was able to get the server to bring over food from the children's menu at Kona. You could always ask about that, but I doubt it will be necesary. Ohana's is our favorite place to eat, it's part of the reason we like to stay at the Polynesian!

You have to ask for -- or even demand -- a different menu for kids' at menu at O'hana. I would think you also could insist that she wanted that instead of the regular meal. It's been a few years since we went, and our server didn't offer it, and we didn't know to ask. We had a 4-year-old who ate a couple bites of meat and some pineapple. Our service was subpar and the food was so-so -- we've never gone back.

We have a teen who sometimes goes elsewhere in the same park or at the same resort when we're eating something too exotic for him. It's a totally different restaurant, of course, but he has gotten a kids' meal at Akershus while the rest of us had the buffet.

she hates Pepper too. If any of it has even a hint of anything other than salt, she won't touch it. She may eat the rice as long as it is like ham fried rice. She hates spices, sauces, ketchup, ect.

I think at 15, she's old enough to make choices for herself. If she decides to not eat what is at Ohana's, I suspect she'll be hungry come breakfast. There is only so much you can do.

I hope her pickiness doesn't put a damper on your dinner there. I hope you can enjoy it anyway.:D

The meal comes in stages, or waves. First the salad, bread, veggies, rice, etc. arrives. Then, servers bring around huge skewers of meat to your table. They will put a few pieces on your plate each time the come by. One time they will have the steak, next pork, then chicken , then shrimp. (not alwyas that order, and sometimes they have more than one kind with them) You can ask for refills of the rice, veggies, etc. at any time. At the end, the bring the pineapple. I think there might have been ice cream or something else for dessert for our 6yo who won't eat fruit, can't remember.
If it turns out halfway through the meal that your dd won't like the food, ask your server if you can place a *to go* order for food from Kona, that you can just pick up on the way out of Ohana's after your meal. The entrance to both restaurants is right next to each other, and you can always check out the menu before you go in to Ohana's. Of course, she might not like anything there either, but they do have a children's menu that she might like. If all else fails, Captain Cook's is directly beneath Ohana's and is open 24 hours. It has all the usual stuff, sandwiches, single pizzas, cookies, fruit, chips, hotdogs, hamburgers, etc. Would you feel comfortable having her leave you in Ohana's eating and go down to Capt Cook's herself? (my dd is 6yo, I can't imagine ever letting her go anywhere by herself yet! Maybe when she is 15 I'll be able to....maybe? LOL)
The good news is there is really no waiting for food at Ohana's. It comes and keeps coming. Your dd won't have to wait too long until you are full and ready to go...and there is entertainment with the coconut races and all!

We had a terrific waitress at O'hana who brought my picky son a huge portion of mac & cheese and chicken fingers. I would just ask!

We had the same problem with our 2 DD (14 and 16 at the time). I told our server as soon as he got to our table that the younger one wanted to order a separate meal. No problem! He brought her the burger she requested but still encouraged her to try everything else. Older DD tried and did not like what was offered. When the server noticed, he asked what she would like, and then brought her a burger also. Only DH and I were charged for the family style meal, the girls were charged for the burgers.

We were there 3 weeks ago with 4 children (4,9,10,13) all somewhat picky eaters. I told waiter and he brought them four chicken and fry platters and we were charged for chicken and fries, not the pre set pricing.

It pays to ask!

Have fun!

How sad for a toddler to think that the only thing 'good' to eat is chicken fingers and fries :( Even sadder for a teenager! My two boys don't always embrace new foods, but we certainly don't let them direct where we eat as far cuisine is concerned (we don't eat anywhere with tablecloths yet ;) )
I say...eat where you want. If they are hungry (and perhaps if they aren't given the option of fingers and fries) they will eat. I know it's hard to shell out the $$$ if they don't eat. That is a different issue. Good luck...

I do hope you get to enjoy O'hana's. It was one of our best meal experiences :D

I can hardly wait to try O'hana's when we go in March!! We have a PS for March 16th just in time for the fireworks. My two boys are 13 and 10 and although they are somewhat picky surely they will find something they like. Thanks for all the great reviews.

We'll be at Ohana's the March 17. One day later, but the same time!

so true pewing.....

OK I'll try to stay off the soap box, but my kids have known from the time they started eating table foods, that they do not dictate where and what we will eat. If they don't like the food in front of them they don't eat that meal. In turn I have 2 kids (14 and 5) who will eat almost anything. The worst thing OMHO is to say in front of a child "oh they don't eat that" before they have even tried something. I have a friend who does that and there are many foods he would eat while with us, until she said "oh he won't he that" in front of him.

My family and I went to Ohana in Sept. It was the biggest waste of $100. We did not like anything-IMHO. We will never, ever go there again.

Thanks sha_lyn ;)

Regarding the original post...it's chicken (and other things) cooked on a stick...nothing too fancy really. There is rice...can't et plainer than that! You shouldn't have any problems.

Trish5768: So sorry you had such a bad experience! It is an expensive meal, but when we went...it was well worth it. I really hate that you had a negative experience with it.

We ate at O'Hana twice last summer and each time we ordered a burger and fries for one picky teen in our group. We were charged only for the burger and fries not the buffet price.

O'hana is one of our favorite restaurants. The food is turkey, steak, pork, and jumbo shrimp cooked over an open flame. They bring large skewers of the meats by your table throughout the meal. There is also salad, stir-fry veggies, rice, chicken wings on the table in a lazy susan type platter that they replenish as needed. My DS 19, and his friend,19 also, ate 51 and 49 jumbo shrimp respectively. Where else could we feed 6 teens that much food for just $22.
This summer we'll be in WDW for my b-day and I've already decided on O'hana for my b-day dinner.

This is great news folks. We went to Ohana last year and I loved it. So did my parents. My husband was iffy and my kids ate virtually nothing -- what a waste of money. We are going to WDW in a few weeks, and Mom and Dad want to go back, and actually talked about sending my husband and the kids downstairs to the "fast food" place near the pool where they serve burgers and chicken fingers. It's nice to know we can ALL go to Ohana again and my 3 fusspots can get a burger!

I always learn something here at DIS...
