might be a dumb question but do you always keep the external hooked up to your computer? If something happens to your computer hard drive is that going to affect the external as well?

Not a dumb question at all, as I know a number of people who keep their external drive connected to their computer. If lightning (or fire) hits it is probably all gone, if it is an internal hard drive failure the external should be ok.
For this reason I keep my external drive in a fire safe.

I have two externals and a laptop so mine are not always hooked up. All my music is on one of my externals (along with one of my photo backups) so that's hooked up often, but not all the time. Oh and a good serge protector is very important

no dumb questions here.
I do not keep my external's hooked up all the time. I move my laptop around a lot so staying plugged in is not ideal for me. But my cables are at hand incase I need to access pics quickly.

And yes, a good serge protector is super important!

when our computer crashed a month ago we not only lost our photos but all our emails, address book and every document and program. even all my fonts were gone. luckily we had most of the photos elsewhere but is a very timely reminder to back up EVERYTHING
