I just spoke to someone who wanted to rent us a reservation and told me that renters can no longer call MS to verify that the ressies are in their name. This sounds wierd to me since we've rented 2 other times and were always able to confirm. So is this true?

It's true. The policy was changed I believe in August. Only the member may call MS. No one is trying to scam you!!

Thank you, he sounded so nice, but I just wanted to make sure! I can't believe they did that!

I'm sure someone else has more/better info on this, but i believe part of the "new rules" at MS were that they were only dealing with members, meaning if you didn't have a member number and couldn't properly identify yourself as a member they wouldn't answer any questions or deal with you in any way as it relates to reservations.

We're going this time w/the intention of purchasing and of course we plan to use our pts most of the time, but I find it annoying that if we wanted to rent to someone that the person wouldn't be able to confirm w/ms.

They did it for multiple reasons, one main one it is Member Services, providing services for DVC members. The member you are renting from can contact them for all your needs, requests, Dining plan, ME, etc.

As to the confirming the reservation, a printed copy of the reservation is truly enough. The phone calls were a false sense of security as the member has control of the reservation anyway, until you check in.

Disney will not become involved in the rental transaction in any way, including verifying that the ressie exists. In truth, there is little point to MS verifying the ressie anyway, except to make the renter "feel better" as the owner ALWAYS has control of the ressie and could cancel the ressie 5 minutes after it was verified...which may be one reason Member Services no longer does it, it could potentially leave them open to be part of a groundless civil action if they verified the ressie then it was cancelled.

It is true... Commercial renting became such an issue that Disney decided that communicating only with the owner was a good way to control the situation.
