It sounds like she specifically asked for a King room for four people and then asked for a ----ed connecting room, which wouldn't work. That is eactly what happened But now I have to know what my wording has to be. I just definitely need the roll in shower. Next questioin I have is will they tell me at the time of making the reservation if I will have two double beds or the connecting room

No, they won't because unfortunately a few dishonest people would make reservations asking for HC rooms so they could get 2 rooms it would prevent people who actually need them from getting them. That being said some resorts you have a better chance but still no guarantee.

Just state your needs as clearly as possible: 1) I need a handicapped accessible room with a roll in shower. 2) I have a party of 4 adults. 3) I would like to stay at ____ resort, from ____ to ____ dates.

The CM should then verify availability with special reservations, and will let you know if they can accomidate your needs. I would not expect them to tell you at that time whether or not the accomidations will be a) all in one room with double beds (sleeps 4)... or b) a hc room with a king bed (sleeps 2) and an additional, connecting room (for the balance of your party).

Special reservations blocks out a room(s) for you at the time of the reservation. But things happen, and it may end up that they need to switch/adjust your room asignments out of necessity at a later date. This, in part, is why they will not tell you any specifics. Potential for abuse of the system (by people who do not actually need the accessible room, but are hoping they might score a free connecting room) is another reason.

Unfortunately there is a potential for abuse which really disturbs me. I have a friend who is a t/a who has told me that she's booked a family w/o special needs who req an accessible room for the very reason we've discussed on this thread. She felt terribly to make that request for them as she knew 100% they did not need the room type, but as their t/a she really had no choice. I cringe every time this subject comes up and people post about "----" rooms. While we always want to help each other/those who DO need an accessible room there remains the possibility that they will become even more difficult to get when people who don't need them end up requesting them for the wrong reasons. We really need to set up a system where we can PM each other vs. posting this kind of information on a public board. Sigh....---Kathy

Don't sigh too much, Kathy. While you may think it's fighting a lost battle it might just be a tad bit less of a fight. You've posted this opinion before and it did open eyes. At least mine. I added my postings at that time to make sure nothing could be 'learned to abuse' from it. Yeah, I found out how one can know if a ---- room is being blocked, but no way I will ever post such a thing in public or in a PM if I'm not sure the person is legit.

At this moment, this phenomenon is pretty unknown at CRO. (which has given my TA a lot of headaches having to keep explaining the CM and telling them to just contact SR to hear things are correct the way they are) Hopefully this means it's not too overly known with the public. Heck, as soon as it becomes 'common knowledge' on the DIS, I bet you there will be a 'not only do they get to board the bus first, but now this at the resort' wining type opening a topic about it.

Maybe Sue and/or Cheshire Figment can help us out on this? I mean as far as I know there aren't any rules about this, but maybe we could make our own 'honor code' or something about this subject??

I honestly never thought of people doing this with t/a help. It is pretty rude and disgusting Like you said if it gets on the boards they will start saying we are also getting ----. rooms. I am personally disgusted how people with no disability whatsover, judge us if something is wrong with us or not. I have never wished my disease or problems associated with it on anyone, but sometimes I would love for them to be able to feel the pain & sense of feeling "different" that disabled people feel. The lack of compassion towards disabled human beings is mind boggling. I truly feel sorry for all of those who post those hateful and mean posts they are the ones who deserve pity because they are truly pitiful.

What I meant was if it is impossible for us to fit in the room will they let us get another room. They probably will if they have room. I think I am just going to be better of staying in a villa that has 2 bedrooms.

We stayed in a 2 bedroom at SSR last fall, it was HUGE!!!!!!!! My DD got lost with all the doors LOL.

Whether or not the room is comfortable for someone, a tight fit, etc. doesn't matter at all. The only time an add'l room is given is if the accessible room doesn't have enough bedding to accommodate your party size. This is due to the configuration of the room with the need for a larger bathroom that has thus removed space from the interior of a room prohibiting two beds. This actually is the case in only a few resorts, most being able to accommodate the same party size as for those w/o special needs for an accessible room. Perhaps we shouldn't use the word "----" as that's often what someone searches for??? I know people have found this information and lied and it's only going to get worse. The cruise lines contend with this issue constantly- to the point where if you want to get an accessible stateroom on certain ships, you'd better book on day 1. If you read Cruise Critic there's are entire threads where able bodied people feel entitled to book accessible staterooms and aren't stopped by the cruise lines. After all, no one has to disclose their disablity so it's up to each person's moral code ( something which many don't have..hence the huge ....sigh)---Kathy

People are paying for a certain number of sleeping spaces. If the hotel provides that and provides an accessible room that meets the accessibility guidelines, they have met their part of the deal.

Thank you all for so much info! We have decided to go with a house !So my job tomorrow is calling on the vacation properties for rent and finding out which ones have HA especially roll in showes. I will post my findings on which ones do and dont tom. I wrote away for the "Orlando Vacation Giuide" and it came in the mail Sat. I will just go thru and mark y/n.
