I don't care what country they are from they are here in the US and we don't pee in the sink. That is just disgusting. BTW my dad is an immigrant and yes they do some things differently than us but he addapted so that is not an excuse.

My DS did not like them at all either, but we have used the stickies tip, too. If I don't have a sticky then, well, he just has to go without it. And, like I said this didn't look like someone who was just trained...

AND, that must mean that they use the sinks the entire trip to do their business (and if they ARE indeed scared of the flushing, then I suppose they ARE using them for #2, as well!). I'm sorry, but even if they are foreign, I find it hard to believe that they don't know what a toilet is used for...

Knowing what its for is not the same as being accustom to using one. And no, its not an excuse,its gross and I think that all people should educate themselves on such things before visiting a foreign country, but I'd probably be the one peeing a bidet if it was available so what do I know.

My husband DID that. We were in a hotel and he thought it was a toilet without a seat for him. He was SO excited to not have to remember to put the seat down! And then he "flushed" and it got him in the face!

God how I love that man!

Before anyone comes up with well pee is sterile yes it is if you are healthy. So we wouldn't know if this kid was healthy or not

That is seriously disgusting! Being afraid of the self flushing toilet is no excuse! My son was scared of that feature when he was little, so we carried around a portable fold up potty and brought it with us, INTO the bathroom stall, shut the door, and handled our business. Openly having a 5 year old pee in a sink in the middle of the bathroom is absolutely ridiculous!!!!

My dad's family is from the middle east. They have a small hose (made for this purpose-not a garden hose) in every bathroom to wash up afterwards. They find toilet paper disgusting and not an effective way to clean yourself after using the bathroom. One aunt and cousin finally visited us in the US last year. It turns out that when they are out and about, they keep a water bottle in their purse to use in the restroom because they refuse to use the toilet paper. My mom didn't know that, and suggested that my aunt not carry her heavy purse around Disney all day. My poor aunt didn't argue...and didn't get to pee ALL DAY.

Contrary to what some people on here think, the American way is not always viewed as being the best by people of other cultures and religions. Maybe the mother figured that peeing in the sink and washing with water was less disgusting than wiping with paper? I agree that it would freak me out, but as someone mentioned, as long as it was only pee, I'd let it go.

Like I said before pee is not always sterile so IMO you can't just let it go. For the most part pee is sterile but if you aren't healthy it isn't

As gross as I think it is, there are some cultures who do not use toilets. You said that they didn't speak English so it could be the case that she really didn't know it was wrong.

Have you ever heard of a squatting toilet? and yes those who are accustomed to using one, do not use our sit down toilets in the traditional fashion

Even the kid was scared of automatic...why wouldn't the first thought be to cover the sensor with your hand. Why on earth would some one think that is respectful or even humane. I would have grabbed the first CM and told them why they needed to sanitize the sink. Even she was not American and her culture may be different, I doubt she learned that from another American! What's the saying, when in Rome do as the Romans do...

And now we are worried about the h1n1 virus...

This reminds me of one of my friends, we were talking about funny things that we remembered from when we first moved to the US and she told me about her mother and her experience when she moved from Italy, she was 5 when she moved here and she remembers her mother would wash her bottom off in the sink (even when they were out) after she went to the bathroom, she remembers being mortified when they were in a public restroom, but her mother was used to a bidet to clean up with and couldn't get over the fact that they had none in the bathrooms over here.

Ok...flame me all you want BUT, while I think that is pretty gross considering that there were restrooms AVAILABLE, there are TOTALLY circumstances when I would let my kid pee in the sink. If I had a tot w/ a potty emergency and no stalls available I wouldn't think twice. Now, I would definitely clean up w/ soap and water. Were there not stalls available I would consider that you may not have had all of the information. Maybe there was a REASON why that was their only option but since there were I'm actually a little perplexed by the behavior

Here in Kuwait their bathrooms are usually 1/2 & 1/2 - they'll have half the stalls with basically a hole in the ground about 5-6 inches wide and the other half of the stalls are actual toilets. They all have hoses AND toilet paper in them. I've been to many many many places over here and have always found a bathroom with at least 2 stalls - one of which is a toilet.

I guess my point here is two fold...lol...

1 - they don't dig holes here ( ) but they do "go" in holes. (And actually on one of my trips to Italy we were in a little town and they had that type of bathrooms too)

2 - Even though they have the "holes" and the "hoses" they ALSO have toilets and toilet paper... I've been to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, etc and it was the same in all those countries too...

Oh, I DID have my kids wash their hands but I got paper towels put soap on it and washed and rinsed them like that (a bit of a pain, but we ALWAYS wash after using the restroom)...I didn't want them leaning over the sink. Plus, some anti-bacterial for good measure.

Just because she didn't speak english, you think she didn't understand that toilets are for waste and sinks are for washing, cmon...I think it was just laziness or some other poor excuse.

Oh good! I was as bothered by not washing hands as pee in the sink. Laziness doesn't make sense when there are stalls available. I just think it is a weird choice unless you have a reason.

As far as having pee around, I live in a house with an abundance of boys, and someone is always cleaning pee off of something. At least when they were young. It would have wigged me out a bit, and I would have told my husband, but I wouldn't have had a hissy fit.

Think about it - with squat toilets, just people's feet are touching anything in a bathroom. People who are used to that might be pretty grossed out with our convention of *sitting* on a toilet - sitting on the same surface where someone else's bare bottom was just moments before. I agree. Different isn't always bad. They did freak me out when I first encountered one. It improves one's balance!
