Vero Beach's Beach

I know that the hurricane hit Vero hard and took a swat at the resort. We visited there after the hurricane (Jan 2005) and just returned from another visit this past month. I have to say that in the past, I wasn't crazy about the beach area before. To me, it had a lot of grassy/weedy stuff and the ocean floor at the shore had some drop-offs/unevenness that I wasn't thrilled with (from a mom perspective). It may be me, but the beach seems better than before. They obviously build up the beach area - the sand/beach area seems more wider, no grass/weedy stuff and the ocean floor seemed to be smooth and not as deep with the drop-offs that I seem to remember. Does anyone know how much beach reconstruction had to be done? It looks very beautiful now and it makes the Vero resort even more attractive a place to stay. Disney's best kept secret for relaxation, if you ask me!

Yes, I agree I believe that the beach area itself has been improved. My family and I love Vero.

We were there last year after the hurricanes, and for us it was truly sad. That grassy vegetation was what keeps the beach cottages from falling into the ocean during big storms. I am sure you noticed all the new grass plants Disney planted in rows (like a pine forest). Just hope they take and grow fast enough to provide a new vegetation barrier. I too like the bigger beach. I am the #1 VB fan. I am on the beach almost all vacation (well actually in the water). I just hope they don't get another bad storm before that vegetation matures. I do think Disney has taken the opportunity to re-construct the whole beach approach and it is much better. I doubt the drop-off just into the water has actually changed. I hope not, otherwise my waves wouldn't be there. I will be there on Sunday for a week, and I will give my expert assessment on that. Thanks for all the info.

The 'grassy weedy" stuff is the dune that keeps the entire resort from falling into the ocean. I agree that right now it looks great and it's terrific to see the ocean from all around the resort, but the dune has to be rebuilt and vegetation regrown to keep the beach from eventually beginning on the other side of the barrier island
