Hi all-im travelling to vero in july and am looking for advice on how to cope with the noseeums. Can anyone reccommend any lotions or sprays to keep them at bay?
We also have a baby in our party so any advice on how to protect him would be welcome too.
Many Thanks
Dave

My DH and I vacation often on the west coast of Florida, I wasn't aware that the east coast was also no-see-um territory:(

I received some really good advise from a pharmacist many years ago, ( I have major reactions to those little bites!!!!), he suggested that about a week before my traveling that I take one Benadryl tablet a day. After arriving I start taking them at regular 6 hour intervals. While it doesn't keep the beasties from biting, it does help me from becoming swollen at the bites.

Benadryl also makes an itch relief spray which is wonderful.

AS far as a topical for prevention the best I have used is the old standby, AVON skin-so-soft bath oil. TRust me, it really works. You can purchase it in the grocery & drug stores on the west coast. I would assume you can do the same on the east coast. Make sure you do buy the Avon product though, the knock-offs don't prtect nearly as well. I think using it on a youngster would also be ok.

There are three that I am aware of that have been independently tested as effective.

1. DEET is generally the most effective measure. Try Off Deep Woods.

2. Picaridin has been demonstrated as an effective alternative to DEET. Try Cutter Advanced with Picaridin.

3. Eucalyptus is the third. Try Repel Lemon Eucalyptus.

We just got back from 4 day trip to Vero Beach. Neither my wife or I got bit once. We walked the beach every day, walked the resort, even went on a long bike ride. We didn't wear any bug repellent.

thanks for bringing this up - we are travelling sept 21 for 5 days antone know that the no see ums are like at that time of year??

We were at VB 2 weeks ago. I think the no-seeums ate better than I did. I'm still scratching from them.

The other thing that I have found to be effective is Avon's Skin So Soft Oil. I have no idea why...but it works.

Just a funny note-I was driving home with my DD8 on Thursday and she made mention of the "Can't Seeums" at Vero :rotfl2:
(it was so cute that I almost didn't have the heart to tell her that they are actually called "Noseeums" but after laughing hysterically all the way across the bridge, I did clue her in!)

Over the years two products in particular have been strongly hailed as products that work well:

Cutter Advanced and Avon's Skin-So-Soft. Both use Picaridin instead of Deet.

No-see-ums are at their worst at dusk and dawn (mostly dusk) They aren't really a problem on the beach. More of a problem where grass is around. If you're going to do the camp fire or walk around the resort at dusk wear your long pants, socks and shoes.

We go to VB in August and have been bitten all day long. I think that it depends on your attraction level!!!

Yup.. like flies to... :rotfl:

Sorry. Had to do it. :goodvibes

Actually, I think August has been our most noticable time also.

We went last year in August and three of us out of 5 were bitten terrible. wWe had to use benadryl spray to stop the itch but the itching was bad and we looked horrible during the next week in Disney all covered with red bites.

We were at VB roughly the same time as backyardponder (5/13 thru 5/16) and didn't use any repellent, but, didn't get bitten at all ........maybe the noseeums didn't like us, huh? We also walked the beach, and were near the pool morning, afternoon and early evening, took a walk across the road near the lake, etc. And, since I had heard they are very bad at VB I made sure I took Off Back Woods with us......but, we didn't need it at all.

Off, Cutters, and other manufacturers make products both with and without DEET. DEET is the most effective insect repellent, but it is usually not recommended for children.

I have heard that some folks don't think Skin-So-Soft bath oil works, but it's always worked just fine for this Florida native. Dilute it 50-50 with water.

I'd be very reluctant to take a prophylactic dose of benedryl. Benedryl is great stuff, but it makes me sleepier than I want to be...which can be dangerous if you're driving for example. And I don't like to take any medicine unless I absolutely need it.

I'd prefer insect repellents and various brands of sting swabs/topical sprays/lotions if I get bitten.

If you really need benedryl, it's fairly quick-working so I doubt taking it beforehand really adds much.

The other downside is that allergic reactions worsen with each exposure, so taking benedryl instead of using repellent is actually probably making future reactions worse...even though the current bite doesn't itch as bad as it might have.

Just FYI, all insects carry some type of venom. Welts, pain, rash, and itching in the area of the bite are all normal reactions -- even big painful welts. That's just your immune system working normally. You will react differently to various bites. I get nothing but a little itch from mosquito bites, a burning small welt that goes away in a matter of seconds from most wasp bites, but a quarter-sized knot that hurts for hours from a horsefly.

An abnormal reaction to any allergen includes a red rash (hives) away from the envenomation site (usually the abdomen) and tingling, numbness, or swelling of the tongue and/or lips. Either of those signs can indicate a real emergency and the person needs medical attention immediately.

I've never seen an abnormal reaction to sand fleas or noseeums (or mosquitoes, for that matter), but I guess anything's possible.

We just got back from a wonderful trip to VB.

Unfortunately, my body is one giant welt from all of the bites. I am itching uncontrollably despite using various creams.

It is a beautiful place and we had a great time. We went with another family and we competed in our VB competition - this year, the Verolympics. My family took the Gold in mini golf, volleyball, and shuffleboard - Michael Phelps - look out!

Anything that has Skin-SO-Soft in it...Avon makes a bug spray with it, or just spray it on straigtht. Forget about the Cutter's....didn't work at all.
