Vero Beach for a 2month old ????

Anyone have any experience travelling with an infant that young?

We had planned on a cruise in March and then cancelled because we are expecting Child #2 at Christmas.

Instead we thought we would go to Vero for a week to celebrate my big 4-0. DW thinks it will be fine but I am having second thoughts that it is too young.

Plan was to go to Vero for 7 days and then Beach Club for 3 days. Might or might not do the park for 1 day.

Other DD is 2 now and a good traveller. She has been to WDW 2 times already when she was 12 mo and 18 mo.

Is this just a bad idea?

Well, here would be my concerns with a 2 month old.

First, a 2 mth old hasn't been vaccinated against a whole lot yet and travelling to a place like disney where there are so many people carrying who knows what would bother me. Babies just seem so fragile and helpless during the first 3 or 4 mths.

Second, I really regret trying to do a beach vacation when my middle child was 3 mths old. At the time, the doctors were advising NO sunscreen under 6 mths old (I think this has changed since then though). So, I bought one of those baby tents for the beach for him to play and sleep in. It was a nightmare. The sand kept blowing inside the tent and my DS was covered with fine blowing sand, including his face and it was getting in his eyes. Then, it started to get so hot inside the tent since the sun was beating down on it and despite the vent holes, it was unbearable inside the tent. So, we took him out and sat under an umbrella with him. Well, he ended up with really bad sunburn on his face from the reflective rays off the sand. He actually had blisters inside of blisters. It was horrible and I still feel really guilty to this day.

Personally, I would never do it again with a baby that young. I'm not sure what age I feel "safe" if I had to do it again. We did take my third child at around 9 months to disney and to the beach and everything went fine but we sunscreened her up really good. She still came back with a very dark tan, but no sunburn and thankfully no illnesses.

That said, there are many people that manage vacations with little ones without a problem. Aside from the germ issue, disney is probably easier than the beach with a little one. At least they are somewhat protected from the sun in the stroller.

I think it depends...will you be okay with either you or dh spending a lot of time in the room with the new baby? A baby that age wouldn't be able to be out in the sun long at all. Add a toddler to the mix (a toddler who probably won't want to spend much time in the room), and you could have a vacation where one of you is in the room with baby, and the other one with the toddler on the beach. So I think it just depends on what your expectations of the vacation are; and if you and dh are willing to split up and do separate things.

I don't think I'd have fun at the beach with a 2 month old.

My youngest is almost 7 months & I still wouldn't take her.

I have taken my kids to the fake beach down the road from me-it is a tiny lake with no waves vs LI Sound which has waves & a current.

My dd was between 3-6 months when we went & I think I only went 2 times this summer since it was more of a hassle.

I did have a bouncy seat with a net attached so she pretty much slept in that the entire time under the umbrella.

I think one time I did take her out to 'swim' but it was just not fun.

Oh & it was just me & my 3 kids since dh was working.

In spite of DW thinking it would be better to have a birthday trip somehwerwe warm, I am feeling it will just be more fun to go in October when child #1 is 3 years and #2 is 10 months.

Our daughter turned 2 months old last summer when we were at VB. We had an enjoyable trip but I spent alot of time in the room. Not a huge sacrifice but our other 2 kids were 14 and 15 at the time so my DH was able to enjoy the beach with them. I really think it would be a challenge with a toddler and an infant. We went back this summer with her at 14 months, first 12 days at Disney and then 6 days at the beach. Disney was great but again at the beach she and I limite our time on the beach because of sun exposure.

I would do it. Baby will probably be sleeping a lot, so I would sit under an umbrella with a book, water bottle and nurse and cuddle. At the Beach Club, you could just put baby in a pouch or sling where he/she will be content to snooze all day.

I would like to point out that vaccinations are not the cure all for germs. If you are familiar with the diseases for which there are vaccinations, you would know that you are not likely to catch them while at Disney World. My children are vaccination free and have been to many different places including Disney... Your biggest threat for "germs" would be the common cold, and as long as the people who are caring for baby are washing their hands a lot, baby should not catch a cold.

We live near the beach and my daughter's were 6 months or so before I took them. Just a difficult thing to do--and with the sun...lots of gear to keep them protected.

DVB is a nice resort--you might be fine just hanging out at the pool for a week...but I would flip the trip and do more time on property than at DVB. That way you could also stroll around the boardwalk, DTD or whatever you like.

(I worked at DVB for a few months ).

I just think there would be more to do at Disney than at Vero to make the trip more worthwhile. But you don't have miss out on it entirely.

ETA: Not sure if sunscreen formulas have changed--but typically on a baby that young, you can't apply sunscreen yet. You can purchase UV clothing that will keep their skin protected without the cream.

We love the beach and make a trip every year, and we have traveled twice to WDW with infants...dd#1 at 3 months and dd#2 at 6 months. We also had both girls at the beach dd#1 at 11 months and dd#2 at 8 months. However, I think I would hesitate to take a 2 month old on the trip you described and especially with a toddler. No way of know what type of baby you will have...good night sleeper? colicy? days and nights reversed? a good eater? etc, etc. So many variables families and baby are adjusting to at that stage. Plus, having a new sibling can be hard on a toddler who just may not take very well to mom staying in the room with new baby sister or brother.

In all honesty, our beach trip at 8 months with dd was harder than I thought it would be. We always rent a beach house and other family travels with us (grandparents, aunts, uncles) and it is a low key type of vacation, but the beach itself is hard with an infant. All the things we love suddenly seem so menacing to an infant...the sand, the wind, the sun. We brought dd twice to the beach, but after that took turns staying at the beach house (luckily we had family who were happy to help as well) with her for the most part...just a much more friendly environment for her.

I think your idea of a fall trip with a 3 year old and a 10 month old sounds much more enjoyable for all. Hope you have a lovely trip no matter what you decide

I am notmeaning to hijack the thead or anything but this post caused me some distress. Aren't you concerned about your children contracting measles or even worse polio? Not meant to flame either, just cannot imagine not vaccinating my kids.

This is exactly what I did with my little one and like I posted earlier, he ended up with blisters inside of blisters from sunburn that was a result of reflective rays. I really didn't realize this could happen under an umbrella and neither did any of my family members. That is why I try to warn others against doing this. It was a horrible experience for me and my son.

Yes, I do realize that vaccinations are not the cure all for germs - just for some of the more dangerous ones. Also, a tiny infant is at much more risk for serious complications from ANY germ, including the common cold, rsv, etc. Personally, I'd rather wait at least a few more months until their immune system is a little stronger. I always felt that babies needed a fourth trimester to mature a little more before entering this world. Of course, I wouldn't want to have to be pregnant for all that time either though, lol!
