Thanks. I think we will probably take a drive out to the manatee center and look. Our time is going to be short, and we want to enjoy the beach. Our first day we will just look around and relax. Is it worth walking under that highway? What's on the other side?

Also...a little off topic. We are arriving in Orlando and picking up a car. Does anyone know a great, fun place to stop for breakfast to kick off our vacation? I'm sure after flying all night we will all be hungry.

Trail's End restaurant in Fort Wilderness. Ask for Ken. Best breakfast, best waiter, and the atmosphere at FW is very peaceful, just the thing afte getting off of a plane :thumbsup2

Lisa & Vero beach fans,

Seems we were there at the same time and my daughter recognized your daughter - sure they spent quality time at the top of the slide shivering waiting for there turn.

It was our first trip to Vero and we loved it. Sadly, my husband past away in February, so this was a difficult first vacation without him, but we choose the perfect spot. Traveling alone with 3 children young children (almost 11, 9, & 4)is daunting, but Disney VB was great for all.

I was able to watch my youngest in the Pirate play area (which he had hours of fun sliding down the mini slide, running in the fountains of water, and scooping the sand that had accumulated in the water.) While the oldest either swam in the pool (and did the water slide repeatedly), played mini golf (must get the weekly pass), or shuffleboard, ping pong.

The cool weather and rough waves, made spending time on the beach difficult, but my children would rather swim in the pool - so this wasn't really a problem for us.

Food:
We were at the mercy of the resort since I wasn't ambicious enough to rent a car and had taken a limo from WP. Although we had friends in the area that provided some groceries (staying in an Inn room we were limited on what we could make), and we went to dinner with them a couple times. We had shutters for breakfast 2 times which was $35 for 3 kids meal and one adult and it was typical mickey stuff. My 10 year old has an adult appetite, but likes kids food. So one mickey waffle wasn't enough.

The one dinner we had was nice and the staff worked with us on getting something more grown up but enjoyable for my son. They made a special alfredo pasta dish - which was the best dinner at the table. My daughter didn't like the mickey mac n cheese, and my youngest ate plain elbows. My prime rib was flavorful, but I wish I choose some seafood.

Several lunches at the poolside bar were good. Again the kids meal choices weren't plentiful. Not sure why they didn't have a burger plate for kids. Very expensive for chicken nuggets.

Captain Hirams was nice and good food, fun atmosphere, good place for children.

Activities:
Kids did the unbirthday party and seaside chefs, both enjoyable. Son also played flag football and made some friends he could hang with in the pool. Wish we had done the fishing fundamentals, because when we walked to the lake and looked off the dock there were so many fish in the water.
Also did a airboat ride, which was great. It was the coldest day and windy, so that made it less pleasant, but saw over 30 alligators and many birds nesting with young babies. It was great fun.

Room:
We had Inn OV room # 2225. Enjoyed being on the 2nd floor not far from elevator and stairs. Plus the view was fantastic. First night wished I could turn off the ocean because it was so loud :)

Service:
Before arriving I worked with the gift shop to provide a fun basket for the kids. Debbie helped make it special with pool toys and coloring activities. Then when we arrived there was another basket (free) from the concierge filled with fun snacks.

It was a special trip and made my children feel happy after all we had experienced with their father's sickness and death this past winter.

Trip home:

Unfortunately, the trip home proved difficult as both my oldest children started throwing up in the limo to the airport from motion sickness, which continued for the 3 hour flight to NY. Upon arriving home, my oldest son didn't get better and he ended up having emergency surgery that day for a twisted vein in his groin. He recovered quickly, but it will probably be some time before I can get everyone on a plane again.

Hopefully next year back at VB.

Thanks for the info that helped us plan our trip.

Therese

Your vacation sounded great...I'm sorry about your husband. How sad for you, but it's so good that you're showing your kids that you're still a family and are still going to be doing things together.

For the breakfast suggestion made earlier...Since we'll be staying 8 days after Vero at Disney, I doubt we're going to swing in to Disney to do Fort Wilderness. I was thinking of something along the way, but I'm in the process of seeing if I can change my flight (yeah, right) and fly into Melbourne instead of Orlando.

Has anyone done any golfing at VB? Also, what about that walkway that goes under the highway...Anything interesting on the other side?

Well, I can't change my flight to fly into Melbourne (Of course, you can't change anything these days), but I can change the flight to shorten my layover by leaving earlier and not flying redeye. So, we would leave Monday at noon, and then get into Orlando at 10:45, probably not arriving into VB until 1:00 a.m. That's late!! Not to sure about that, but at least we'd be there, we could sleep in and really relax the next day, well rested. That appeals to me more, actually.

Oh my gosh, you guys! I'm so overwhelmed with all of this info! We have never been to Vero, but my family of 5 have invited my in-laws to spend a week leading up to Thanksgiving there. We're all very excited, but I'm not sure how to plan. We have a 2 bedroom lock off, since there were no dedicated 2 BRs available. I'm assuming the 1 BR side will have all of the regular amenities - washer/dryer/fridge/stove?

My MIL has mobility issues. She uses a cane and has braces on her legs. Are there rooms near elevators, in case we are on a higher floor somewhere?

Do you book meals here 6 months out, like at WDW?

Am I asking these questions in the right place? LOL! Maybe there's a Vero for Virgins thread somewhere??

This has been amazing reading so far. I'm all excited to go now that I know something about the joint!

You are in the right place

I can't speak about meals, but except for the Beach cottages all buildings/villas/rooms have elevator accessability. :thumbsup2

Let me know your dates so I can add you to the roll call list.

:beach:

Oh thank you! We're arriving Nov. 23rd and checking out the 27th right now - hopefully the 28th! We're wait listed for our last night :-( There are 7 of us!

We are leaving Saturday for BW and then our first visit to VB from 5/13 through 5/17

I'm wondering about the campfire. Does anyone know if they allow roasting of marshmallows for s'mores? If they do, are the supplies (sticks, marshmallows, etc) available through the resort or do we bring our own? We are making a grocery run on our way to the resort and wonder if we should add marshmallows, chocolate bars and graham crackers to our list!

Thanks a bunch!

roasting of marshmallows for s'mores, The resort will give them to you. Enjoy

Anyone have the link that was posted a while back about the seaturtle thing you could do at VB!!!!!!! Thanks,,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got some sweet new info for VB'rs from BWV dreamin.....

"On the cruiseline boards, I found out that if you contact your local Congressman and simply request that you would like tickets to the Kennedy Space Center, you get them free! Apparently so many are allotted each Congressman to give out to people living in their districts. They are there simply for the asking, no other strings attached. I just got 3 adult tickets for my VB trip in August! How cool is that!"

That is REAL cool... Excellent work for the DIS members.

WOW ! I just noticed this......going to say "hello" to my local congressman now ! Thanks for the head's up !

Is anybody in Vero today that can comment on the beach? Is the wall of sand still present, or has Disney brought in some sand to level the beach. :confused3

three days until our first trip to VB: 05/04 to 05/07/2008. :cool1:
we're driving, so taking our own chairs and umbrella.
the love bugs are back for the month here in Central Florida,
:scared1: but we're hoping they're not on the coast (because of the wind) ?

the info on this thread has been so helpful - thanks. :)
looking forward to so many of your suggestions, especially Squid Lips!
