Anyone used the travel pass feature for $10 per day? Seems like a pretty good deal if you get to talk/text and use the data from your plan.

Bahamas
TravelPass
  • Take your domestic talk, text and data allowances with you while you travel.
  • You’re only charged on the days you use your device.
Now your wireless plan travels just like you do. Take your domestic talk, text and data allowances with you. It's the economical way to stay connected. You’re only charged on the days you use your device while traveling.

To add TravelPass: Text TRAVEL to 4004 anytime on the device you'll be traveling with or continue with the Trip Planner by selecting Yes, I want this option or Sign In button below.

$10.00/Day
Bahamas

I'm interested to see what people have to say! We haven't used the feature yet but have curious as well.

We've just been debating how to best be connected at a fair price. I'm hoping those with experience post something.

I hate to throw another post in without answers, but I figured I would ask this for the person that does eventually save the day by enlightening us all :teeth:

Is that $10 per day charged per account or per device?

I have used it many times while traveling in the Bahamas/Caribbean/Mexico and have loved it! In the past couple of years, I have used the TravelPass in Cancun, Turks & Caicos, Grand Cayman, and the Bahamas, and I've never had any trouble with it. I did a four night Bahamas cruise in April, and I was able to stay connected nearly the entire trip. (Some may say that's a bad thing, but DH didn't come with us and it was nice being able to text with him, send him pics, etc.) The data speeds are great (same as in the US), and I had service in Nassau, on Castaway Cay, and even on most of our At Sea day because we were off the coast of Freeport until late afternoon/evening. It is always well worth the $10/day for me!

Also, I believe it is $10 per day for each phone line, but don't quote me on that. (I wouldn't let my kids even take their phones off of airplane mode, so I'm not positive.)

I just used the international fee per day in Canada. The rate there is $5.00 though. The Verizon agent I spoke with explained that my device would be charged per 24 hour period I use the device and up to something crazy like 12 gigs of data a day (waaaaay more than we use ever in a month).

Anywho, it is per line and charged per day. We got a text one or so hour before the new 24 hour period would accrue.

Hope that helps!

just used it in Copenhagen ... was planning to just use WIFI to stay connected but airline lost a piece of luggage on way over so 'activated' the phone for 1 day to arrange delivery of bag. Worked like a champ. The activation is 1 phone, for 24 hours from first use .... and "limits" are those of whatever your regular plan has. You get full voice/text/data access within limits of what local system can provide.

**************
I would note that sending the text simply adds this feature to your phone/line. There is no charge until you make your first 'international' call/connection. You can also add the feature thru your account service site. When you add the feature you will get a text on the device confirming the addition. SO, add B4 you leave so the addition & confirmation text does not end up costing you $10 for that day's access! I added the feature to all or phones b4 we left. We used 1 phone for 1 day and the charge was $10 ....

From my experience with Nassau, wi-fi is easy enough to find while in port I saw no need to use any data.

Another alternative if you just "have to have the internet" while in port, instead of wandering around looking for free or cheap wifi locations I recently purchased a International Hotspot device called SkyRoam, (NOT shilling for the company here!) It's a cellular hot spot device that works in over 140 countries on their cellular data networks and it doesn't require you to sign up for any plans or data packages or buy sim cards etc. You just turn on the device and once it finds the data network in that country you can activate your day pass (bought in bundles of 5 or 10 day passes for about $8 a day) and off you go, it's good for 24 hours of unlimited DATA on the cellular data network in that country. Heck if you move to another country port with in that 24 hour period you can still use it for that same day pass until the 24 hours expire. I took it on the recent Westbound Panama Canal cruise from Port Canaveral to San Diego and it worked great in every port we went to, Cozumel, Cartagena, even through the Panama Canal, Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas with no problems. The device worked whether I went ashore in port or while I remained on the ship. It's a great alternative to dealing with your cell provider over which service will work and having to sign up and stop the service when your trip is over. I know there were 3 or 4 other cruises on the WBPC trip that also had the same device and we all experienced no problems using them. There's no monthly fee, no activation costs just buy it, and the day passes, once your day pass expires there's no additional cost until you activate another day pass. This is just my experience and I wanted to offer it as a alternative, especially for active cruisers or travelers.

Thanks everyone this is all great info. I always appreciate the help from this community!

I just bought one. It sounds like a good deal. If you do decide to buy one, here is a link for $20 off!

They are also $$79 for the unit right now (usually $99) so it makes it an even better deal. They are selling for $100 or more on Ebay.

I looked into it I just don't think I can justify the cost. Other than places like castaway cay and labadaa haiti (where im sitting on a beach and no option to get coverage another way) I can't think of too many times I would need it. Usually the places where I would use it, I don't want it because of other activities. Certainly a good option though for people who want or need it.

Its better than the shipboard internet when you are in port.

I will test it out on our next cruise and see how it works.

Thank you for that. I think we have decided that we will just pay the $10 a day to Verizon to use our phone. We can turn it into a Wi-Fi hot spot and we have a spare battery for the phone so it should get us through the times when we need it. I have passed this tip along to others.

The problem is that Verizon does not work at some of the areas we sail to. I have the unlimited plan and a hotspot but on the last cruise it was unusable.

This operates on GSM instead of CDMA so it is globally universal.
