I'm due for a new phone under the new every 2 yr plan.

What should I get?

I have an LG Dare right now and it is OK, nothing special.

I'm considering getting one of the Droids. My DH thinks I should wait to see if they come out with the I-Phone soon, but I don't want to wait b/c my LG Dare is not holding a charge like it used to.

I get a $100 credit for the new every 2 yr, plus I get a discount through work so I'm not really concerned about $$$$. I just want a phone that is easy to use, mostly used for talking, texting, and internet. We have the premium family share plan w/ the VZ navigator, etc.

Also, if you recommend the Droid, which one and tell me about the data plan I have to purchase. Is that a one-time deal or a monthly fee?

TIA!

I would get a Droid. Everyone I know that has one loves it. As for the I-phone for Verizion it is going to be at least a year before it comes out, if at all and even then you would want to wait a little while to get one just incase any kinks need to be worked out of the phone or the system.

I would go with the Droid too. Chances are you can get the phone itself for free. Keep in mind that you have to buy a data plan that runs about $30/month for a smart phone. One observation on the IPhone-this past weekend we were at a marching band competition at the U of MN's fooball stadium (outdoor). There were severe storms that rolled through the area and we all had to move into the bathrooms for shelter. There were a lot of kids from our high school band there and parents. The kids got free tickets and were sitting in a different part of the stadium than the parents and when we were in the bathrooms most of the parents were trying to call kids or text kids to check on them. Many of the calls/texts would not go through. We discovered after we got out of the bathrooms that all of the kids that could not be reached had IPhones and those with regular phones, Doroids or Blackberries were just fine. I was doing a lot of texting to my kids to see if they could see other kids around them so their parents knew they were ok.

As the previous poster said, it will be about a year before the iPhone is available, if ever. And honestly, I think the Droid products are better.

I have an original Moto Droid, and I love it. The Incredible and X look really nice too. With any of the Android phones, just like the blackberries, or any other "smart phone," you are going to have a 30.00 a month data plan.

Talks keep breaking down between Apple and Verizon. I don't expect Verizon to offer an iPhone for over a year. I have a HTC Eris, which is a Droid. I absolutely love it. I don't really know how much your monthly data plan would cost, as we have a discount for being teachers.

I have the Samsung Omnia II (i920). I've had Samsungs for years and have been very happy.

If you are getting a Droid, and I highly recommend one, I would rank them in this order.

1. Droid 2 (Not available until next month)
2. Droid X
3. Droid Incredible
4. Droid
5. The other Droid models are under powered and run much older software, there is a reason they are giving them away.

If you do not need a physical slide out keyboard, then you can get the Droid X now as the keyboard is the main advantage of the Droid 2. (Droid 2 is also smaller if that matters) Droid X and Incredible are in very short supply and won't ship until August if purchased online. You may be able to find a Droid X at the store, but after this weekend you probably will have to wait until August for new supply to arrive.

I'd spend $5-10 on ebay to buy a battery for the Dare and wait for the Iphone.

My BF just got the Droid Incredible. And it is incredible..lol. I was playing with it, and it's very user friendly, and the internet is fast too.

Last year, we were getting it in September, then it changed to December, now they are saying a year.

I don't think Verizon will be offering the iphone personally for at least 2 years, by which time the OP can upgrade again.

Thanks everyone for the info & suggestions.

Sounds like the Droid is the winner.

I'm not thrilled about the $30 a month data plan, but what can you do........

Now, to decide on whch Droid to get..............

Yeah, I drive Verizon and my kids nuts. I just don't see a reason to upgrade unless the phone dies. I had by first phone 14 years. DD is on her 4th phone in 6 years. The phones she really wants all require a data plan, but she refuses to pay $30 extra, and I'm sure not going to pay it either.
My phone and DW phone are 4 years old, have my mom on my account and her phone is 7 years old, and has made exactly 4 calls in 7 years!!

As for Droid vs i-Phone, I work with folks with both and Droid seems to be the winner.

Your mom & me both TVGuy:) I take my cell with me when I'm away from the house(which isn't very often) and probably actually use that phone to make a call *maybe* 10 times a year. I love gadgets and am really wanting an iphone or something cool, but realistically, I don't need it. I've had my current phone 5-6 years.

just a heads up on the $100 credit. if you're referring to the "new every two" credit, it's changed. as of march, i think, those that in the past received $100, will get $50 towards a new phone. I was up for my new every two and they only gave me $50. just double check. hopefully you'll still get the $100, but don't be surprised if you don't.

i complained and said i had signed up before the change. no dice. still only got $50

I just got this one too. I love it. DH makes fun of me because I'm playing with it all the time. Just make sure that you download the App killer and use it regularly. I went from draining my battery every 6 hours to having it last the full day with still half a battery charge left. :thumbsup2

I got tired of waiting for the iPhone. :sad2:

Very good to know. I didn't know they were coming out with the Droid 2-I don't really follow it that much. I was going to trade in my Blackberry for a Droid so I will wait for that! I prefer a 'real' keyboard.

I just got the Droid Incredible and love it so far. :) The Droid X was too big for me. I had to get a new phone ASAP so I couldn't wait for the Droid 2.

Life's a gamble. My way only risks $5-10. (BTW, I'm pretty sure that the latest rumor is Jan 2011, not a year away.)

I bolded the important part there. If you're waiting for the iPhone on Verizon, there's no way to tell how long you'll be waiting.

If you want a new phone now, get one.

For what it's worth, I know quite a few people with Droids and quite a few with iPhones. I've heard nothing but good things from both groups.

Personally, even though I'm a tech guy (software developer) and even write apps for the iPhone, I have little interest in a smart phone of any kind. I use my phone to call and text and that's all I need it to do. So I was rather annoyed that Verizon has started requiring data plans for almost all of their phones with QWERTY keyboards. They just recently started requiring it for the Envy's. I think they are down to 2 or 3 QWERTY phones that don't require a data plan.
