This will only be our second cruise and I can't decide on a room location. We have a deluxe family on deck 8. Our options are either all the way forward on the port side, or smack in the middle on the port side. Are all of the verandah's on deck 8 partially open and visible to those on higher decks? I'm a private person and think I might actually prefer a smaller room on a lower deck if it means I can sit on my verandah without anyone peering down at me.

Which ship, as the recommendations differ from the Magic/Wonder to the Dream/Fantasy? Since you're talking about deluxe family rooms being forward as well as midship, I have a feeling you're talking about the Magic/Wonder since they're all in the middle on the Dream/Fantasy, and room 8000 on the Dream is a window room.

For quiet and privacy, the forward room (8000) would be a better bet since you're at the end of a public hallway without out much non-crew traffic. The spa is above you so it's likely to be more quiet. We've stayed midship and aft on deck 8 of the Magic many times, and you often get noise from the pool deck and restaurants above.

While there are some aft rooms on deck 8 with a full metal wall verandah, the forward rooms don't seem to have that issue.

We were in 8500 (the same room, other side of ship) last August. It was a lovely room until the last night. There was a crew door right next to our room and it (no lie) SLAMMED every 5 minutes ALL NIGHT LONG. (I guess they were moving luggage).

If that same crew door is on the other side of the ship, I recommend you STAY AWAY and go mid-ship.

I am almost certain that all of the Deck 8 balconies are private from view from above. Deck 9 hangs over top of Deck 8. (We have been on deck 8 twice and never had a problem with people seeing into our cabin from above.)

Sorry I missed your original question about whether you can be seen from above. There is a large overhang of deck 9 that shields the deck 8 verandahs from view. (which unfortunately also blocks you from seeing the fireworks well from a deck 8 verandah!) So people seeing you from above isn't really an issue.

The only deck 8 verandahs that are visible from above are the extended verandahs of the accessible suites at the back part of the ship (8100, 8102, and their counterparts)
