So this am I take DD to school. We go to a school not orginally intended (our subdivision had its own school at one point) and there is only one small street that connects us to the school area without having to make two left turns on a major road. When we get to the small street this am, we find it completely blocked with tree trimmers....argh!

I totally understand that it needs to be done but anyone with a modicum of common sense would realize that waiting only 15 minutes would have alliviated tha problem, but no, they had to do it at the most inconvienent time possible. Geesh

Ok, rant over! :rolleyes1

The problem with common sense is that is not very common. ;)

Totally understand. I feel your pain:grouphug: Every Thursday morning, when I bring DD to school which is on a narrow, one way street with cars on either side, I have to sit and wait while the garbage truck blocks the entire road, stopping every ten feet for another barrell!! Couldn't they wait until after 9AM when people aren't trying to get their kids to school?? Silly people.....

O.K. So this is reallllly coincidental! Happened to me this morning. Any chance that you live in one town, but the school is in the next neighborhood which is technically another town? Northwest suburban Chicago??

Same thing happens at our school - also a one way street. And also every other Fri the recycle truck does the same thing. There are 1,000 other streets in town - go down one of those at school drop off time.

The garbage men around here really annoy the crap out of me!

One of the roads I take to work in the morning is a residential street but a lot of people use it (instead of the main road) so it's busy every morning. And it does run between an elementary school and the high school. On garbage days the driver always stops the truck in the middle of the road (or sometimes even ACROSS the whole road). I know that sometimes the truck can't pull over because of parked cars, which I understand. But most times they have more than enough room to pull over to one side and let some of the traffic pass. But no. I know they see the traffic but they seem to think it's a game to see how many cars they can pile up! I am a patient person in the morning. If I hit a red light or have to stop for a school bus, oh well I wait my turn. But I swear the garbage men do it on purpose and after 7 or 8 houses (and dodging all the newly licensed (at least I hope) High School drivers) it just gets annoying!

Yes indeedy, we live in one town, school in another, school district yet another.

To top it off, last year, the town the school is in decided to trim the trees around the school as the kids we coming in. There were men with those huge branch saws walking around as the kids were walking past the trees. And the chipper was in front of the school. Unbelievable.....

Happens here too. And to top it off - the house across the street from the drop-off loop decided to remodel this school year! Cement trucks, contractor's trailers, etc. parked on the road or blocking it....... it's been a rough year!

Hmmm, must be tree trimming season here in the NW Chicago 'burbs. I had a similar thing happen this morning but not on a one way road so I was able to get around the truck after a few cars passed in the oncoming lane.

Now I'm convinced that our kids go to the same school :teacher: .... (Everybody sing "It's a Small World ..."). Do you live in B.G.? What grade(s) are you kids?

Kidding right? I mean really... are all workers supposed to take into account where traffic is going to be and avoid those areas at all costs? What if they did and they must put others out for a short period of time anyhow? What if there is no other option? Would it be better if they just do all traffic stopping work on the weekends and at night, then it wouldn't be bothersome to a parent dropping off/picking up a child at school? Not minimumizing what you do(I also drive my youngest to school and work from home) but maybe a bit of patience to those that do that type of work would be better... my other half has to put up with the cranky drivers daily due to him performing this type of work and he's not any happier about having to slow/stop traffic than you are.

No not kidding. A small amount of common sense or planning by the public works dept would completely eliminate the situation. I know they are trimming the trees in the area. Yesterday I took the dogs for a walk and had to turn around because they had the street and sidewalk blocked off. Did I complain? no, it was a reasonable time and the work needed to be done.

This was completely blocking the only way for all the people in my subdivision (and there are many and we don't have a bus option) from getting to school. Additionally, there was no signage/warning before you got to the street so it created a situation of a bunch of cars pulling u-turns.

I didn't get out and yell at the workers, I called the village and complained to the person who schedules the work, he is the one responsible for the situation, not the workers.

So because they didn't consider those that drive their children to school who did have another route option available... they lack common sense?

Define reasonable? In our area work that needs to be done outdoors is allowed from 6am until 10pm. Should they wait until all children are in school?

You stated earlier that there was another way to the school but you'd have to make 2 left turns from a main road. Agreed on the signage...

Again, there could be other circumstances that you have no knowledge of and that are too detailed for the poor person that answered the phone to actually explain. It's not as easy as it seems to line jobs up to please everyone.

I would contact the city on this issue. Some areas have rules/laws against this if the reconstruction is being done on private property. I know as a design student we have been warned about this sort of thing for when we do projects.

Ok, maybe I should say that the person who scheduled the work lacked common curtesy. I am not asking for much here. 15 minutes later and there would have been no issue whatsoever. Of course the work needs to be done and I am glad of it, but just the tiniest bit of consideration would have made the morning a whole lot easier for many people.

I said this WAS reasonable, even tho it was a pain for me to have to turn around and retrace my route, I didn't get mad or complain.

I did not yell at a "poor person on the phone" I left a controlled voicemail for the Director of Public Works. He is the only person to whom I vented my displeasure and I was polite when I left the message. I fully understand the difficulties in the work and the need to keep the area safe. I figured venting on here was a better option than yelling at the guys with large chain saws! :rotfl:

The sports teams that use our school's fields after hours rent port-a-pottys. Several times a year the whole parking lot gets mired up while a truck drops off or picks up right during morning dropoff and buses. I always think that is so silly.

There's no way they're so booked up that the only time they can pick up or deliver is during the 15 minute drop off window! I can see it happening once, but why every time? You'd think after having 10 busses and a ton of cars backed up down the street the first time, they'd figure it out.
