Vent and question!!!! How many days do you think.....

it would take for a child to get the flu or cold after being exposed to another child with it???

My DD is high risk for hospitalization from getting the flu because of a disease she was born with and one of the children in her class keeps coming to school with vomiting and fever because he doesn't want to miss any days. He was in Monday and had very high fever and vomiting and was sent home then came back Tuesday and vomited at lunch and sent home again(not sure if fever was gone) had snow day on Wednesday and I took my DD in to school this morning because I had to drop off stuff for Valentine's Party and he was there again not looking well and teacher said he was leaving at 11:30, probably for doctors appointment. Teacher told me she has been spraying with Lysol like crazy.

It is very frustrating for me because the little boys parents are people we see in social situations and know that our little girl can get very sick and end up in the hospital from flu's and colds. She has already been in 4 days in January.

She gets the flu shot and we wash hands constantly, but when can we relax and know that she has escaped this one???

It is great that kids don't want to miss school but why can't parents realize sending their kids to school sick can be extremly harmful to others?? No wonder it keeps going around and around. Even been thinking of home schooling her but she is an only child and loves the interaction with other kids.

I'm not sure how long it takes to contract the virus but I can relate to your frustration about parents not keeping their sick children at home.

I work at a fitness center in the child care and you would not believe how many will try to bring in a sick child just so they won't miss a work out. As a result I have missed three days of work this week and have had a sick child since Saturday. There are 4 of us who rotate the schedule and only 1 has been able to work this week because we all have sick kids. We are considerate and don't want to expose our children to others and we miss work because of it. Let alone how terrible for the child to have to try to sit in class and be embarrassed by vomiting at school. This makes me so angry - can you tell!!!!

I also want to add - I really hope your DD doesn't get sick.

I can't answer your question, but I wanted you to know that is EXACTLY why I, as a teacher, DO NOT support perfect attendance programs.

I feel your pain. My own DD is very obsessive about not missing school days, she's so afraid of getting behind. BUT, when she's obviously sick - I make her stay home, no matter what argument she gives me. I make sure to call the school to get her work together and I go pick it up. There's nothing more frustrating than hearing your kid come home talking about how so and so was coughing all day long, etc. You're just sitting there waiting for your whole family to get sick then. I hope your DD doesn't catch it.

Sorry, but I have to say it, I think that is just plain ignorant on that child's parents account.

I am sorry, I would complain to the teacher and the principal. Maybe they need a rule that if a child leaves school because he/she is ill, and gets sick and leaves school again the second day in a row, that child is not allowed back without a doctor's note.

I wonder if you should change to another classroom under the circumstances? That is terrible. Shame on those parents for sending a sick child to school.

Not only is the problem with perfect attendance but also mandatory attendace time. My oldest ds is on block scheduling--meaning he has 4 classes on "A" day and the other 4 on "B" day. he can only miss up to 4 days per semester on "A" days and/or 4 on "B" days. Its really very hard to plan an illness around witch day of the week it is, "A" or "B". We recently had the flu around here and a couple of my kids were sick and had fever, then no fever a couple of days and then fever back for 2-3 more days. He wouldnt get credit for the semester if he missed more than 4 "A" days or "B" days. So in that case I would have to send my kid to school sick.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. I am very frustrated about it all and also think the school focuses on perfect attendance too much. I also think the parents should draw the line with this and realize that they are just spreading germs. I am sure the poor kid feels terrible sitting at school all day long.

Of course we are expecting a huge snow storm over the weekend and hopefully she won't start with any of it during that, I would hate to try and get her to the ER in a foot of snow.

Sorry for your daughter. It is a sad fact that parents will send children to school sick for various reasons. They can't miss work. The kid is going for perfect attendence. They just don't want to be bothered. Unfortunately it happens all the time. And belive it or not some parents refuse to even come take the child home early and send them home on the bus. Not good for anyone.

Please add to those various reasons... "because the school district in their state is so STRICT"

I will ever send my children to school if they are sick, however I can see how some might here because they are really strict in Texas/my area about missing school. They cannot miss more than 5 days in a year without truancy officers at your door- and that's EVEN if they are sick and you call and send a note when they return to school! If they miss more than 5 days in a YEAR they have to have dr's notes. How many people can afford to take their child to the dr for every little fever, vomiting, etc. after those 5 days? I'm betting some couldn't. So unfortunately it means some people will send their child to school unless they are so ill they HAVE to go to the dr anyway.

It's a sad situation.

My own DS8 has been home since Monday AM when they called me to pick him up. I had to close my home daycare because he's running a fever -- thereby, still contagious. Children are suppose to be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school and/or daycare. I could give my son Advil and he'd have no obvious symptoms until it wore off -- although he's pale as a ghost.

I feel that a lot of parent do not either have the time to take off or feel their child is not that sick. As for the daycare situation, I can't tell you how many times I've heard that they pay for it, so why shouldn't their child be in my care. Because they are NOT my children!! It drives me crazy!!

If everyone was concerned about the spread of germs, there would be less sickness. Unfortuantely, in this case, it doesn't seem like the parents are. I would call the school and see what their policy is. IMO, he shouldn't be there.
