Vent! Am I the only one....?

An occasional error doesn't usually bother me, I've probably committed a few myself. Although I must admit, one of my pet peeves is the mis-use of there, their, and they're and your and you're.

My dh misuses the "theres" and "yours" all the time. It totally bugs me to no end when I read a formal document he's sent out and he has those errors. The amazing thing is he has a top level job at the place he works. He is intelligent, it's his formal writing skills which are lacking.

And honey if you're reading this...

Spelling errors do bother me sometimes. I take into account that not all people are good spellers. My DH is a horrible speller. As far as punctuation is concerned, I can't say much on that subject. I know that my punctuation skills are not up to snuff.

Smiley- sound like time for DH to get a secretary!...DH can't spell for beans either...it's pretty funny now that DD6 & 7 are reading, and spelling quite complex words.

I've seen some, but was hoping that they were just learning English. I'm really paranoid right now with my spelling, so I'll stop before I screw up.:p

I always do, but I'm an English teacher...

The one mistake that I hate the most: "alot"

"A lot" is two words not one.

Hey, I learned something!

I’ll admit I am a poster-child for staying in high school. I did go to a technical college for computers, but I haven’t finished yet.

I got into college on a GED.

GED stands for General Education Diploma OR Good Enough Dummy.

Take your pick.

I know people have read things I’ve written and thought, ‘Yup, she really is an idiot.’

I am usually the first one to admit that.

I never take offence to someone who takes the time to tell me what words I am using wrong. For instance the word ‘threw, through, and thru’ are all spelled correctly, but the spell check doesn’t tell you if it’s used correctly.

It becomes a baffling mystery for me. But I am learning. So maybe if someone is posting something that is driving you crazy, you could PM them and help them out.

If it wasn’t for Zurg, my spelling would have stayed horrendous. <~~~~See, I spelled a tricky word!

The only things I have problems with are posts that have no paragraphs because my eyes can’t handle all that ‘power-reading’ at once.

The way I see it...Don't sweat the small stuff. This is a place to have fun. We're not writing college papers here! ;)

Er, no not really. At least 55,000 people I know say "What a great story she has written."

PS offense has an "s" not a "c" ;) Love ya, mean it!

I am not a good speller, so I thank god for spell check otherwise I dont know how I would have received a MA from NYU. However I didnt realize that I would need to use it on a forum about disney. Normally, Im in such a hurry to post before I have a bunch of tiny fingers trying to add something,. I'm usually happy if I can hit send before my post is deleted

Doesn't bother me and sometimes it is actually funny. There is a post on the debate board about high schools failing and there is a typo in the post subject. It says "Are our high schools failing in teaching basdic history and civics?". I'm still surprised that no one has answered with the obvious smart remark (or maybe they have and I haven't read that far!):p

<font color=navy>It used to bother me a lot.... Enough where I would actually correct posts behind the scenes ..... I know I know - rather <s>anal</s> too meticulous  But then, I started paying attention to what the people were saying rather than how perfect the message was spelled, and found that I enjoyed the posts more, and had much more fun here on the boards and sharing with fellow DISers :)

For myself, if I know I have a misspelling, I will correct it. Same for grammar. Must have been all that diagraming (one or two m's are permissable, per Merriam-Webster, I checked :p :)) with the nuns back in the 50's. :)

As for reading others, as long as I can comprehend the thought train, I can work with it. I do have a tough time reading ALL CAPS and single paragraphs, oftentimes, as said above, using the backspace rather quickly.

epon - don't nothng like that there be botherin' me at all.

GED=General Equivalency Degree.

I ain't trying to writes no great literatuer, jus gets my pionts akross.

The only things that really bothers me are all caps, a long post done in one long paragraph, and starting a sentence with a lower case letter. I preview my posts to try to catch mistakes, but things slip through from time to time.
Then don't go over to the Teen Board. It is Horrible!!!
I think that is because most teens have had computer access for most of their lives. They are much more used to using Instant Messaging shorthand than adults and some may not know when it is appropriate and when not. I read a story a few months ago about a teacher who had a student turn in an entire report in IM shorthand. The student seriously didn't think there was anything wrong with it.

I am seriously anal about spelling! I USUALLY don't use caps; sorry if that bothers anyone. I actually find it easier on my eyes. I've even used a lower case "i" in my informal handwriting for most of my life. I just hate the look of the hand-written "I." Im not so good at punctuation, plus I try to write more like I would speak, rather than concentrating on correct grammar. (Is that a run-on sentence?) But, I try to follow the basics. (I am OVER trying not to start a sentence with a conjunction or end it with a preposition -- that is just the way we talk!)

I found especially humorous the "debate board" poster who held the position that a college degree was useless. The spelling and grammar were SO bad that it was REALLY difficult to follow. He was his own advertisment for staying in school. :p

I really don't see what's so difficult to understand about apostrophes. That is my biggest pet peeve. There are a few words that I can never remember how to spell (grammar, embarrass); I just have a mental block. I guess a lot (ew hate that one too) of people have a mental block when it comes to apostrophes, but if you know the function of an apostrophe, you can figure it out! (I'm more forgiving of its/it's. I realize that's a bit more confusing and a matter of memorization.)

now off to spell check since everyone's going to want to pick on everyone in this thread...

I guess typos don't bother me too much because everyone makes typos occasionally. What does bother me, however, is incorrect spelling and grammar. Things like your/you're and their/there/they're really get on my nerves. I guess part of it is because I write for my school newsmagazine and I'm supposed to catch errors like those, but even among the other writers I have a reputation for disliking bad grammar.:p

ACK! ACK! ACK! I am literally getting a headache reading that!

(I also hate when people misuse the words "literally" and "ironic," but that's probably a completely different topic).

Is the ")" before or after the "."? I used to have that figured out.

I'm pretty sure it's before. The period would be the end of the sentence, not the end of the thought in the parens ().

As for grammer and spelling, I find that I don't notice most typos. My mind sees what the writer was trying to say and that's how I read it. This happens when I proof my own posts too. I do agree that reading paragraphs without capitalization and punctuation can be really difficult. Normally I skip those posts, especially on AOL. The DIS board is college level compared to some of the posts you see on AOL ;)

YIKES! Guess I shouldn't visit this board? I'm quite known over on the DVC board for my wonderful typing skills. Note my signature under my screen name.
I can spell, but for some reason I can't type. I type too fast and am too busy with my kids to go back and retype everything. I enjoy the boards so I want to join in when I can and slip into the other room to check out what is going on for a few minutes here and there throughout the day. Sorry if it causes any distress for anyone. ;)
I'll copy and paste this message to check my typing before I post this one!

My dd is dyslexic. I teach reading and spelling to dyslexics. God has taught me tolerance.

I've experienced both adults and kids struggle in getting their words down. They are so afraid of criticism they no longer try.
They're highly intelligent with a lot to say. I'd rather read through the mistakes than not get their ideas and opinions. I have no problem with it because I've seen the tears and heartache that goes along with the inability to express yourself in a perfect manner.

There used to be a spell checker on these forums. I've often wondered why it was disabled. I used it frequently.

I would hate to think the subject manner of this thread would make anyone think before posting for fear that someone is critiquing their posts.
