Vent about Plus size clothing - add yours too!

But I'm with you on the skinny jeans thing! Really.. REALLY?! Do you think my big fat german sausage legs are going to look fabulous in those? Unfortunately, most of my weight is in the lower tummy/hip/thigh area. A lot of times pants would fit my hips and waist just fine but I can't pull them up past my thighs to find out! Almost all the women on my mom's side, no matter if they're skinny or chubby, have these wonderful East German weight-lifting thighs :rotfl: Not to mention it's IMPOSSIBLE to find boots that fit! All these cute boots are in style right now and none of them come close to fitting! Makes me so sad.
Oh man, I can totally relate. I was also blessed:rolleyes1with thick thighs and cankles(a term which I love...not). I just about had a meltdown in Boscov's shoe dept one winter just trying to find some snow boots. It was brutal.

Have you tried Danskin brand from Walmart for workout clothes? They have some capris and yoga pants that I've done well with for going to the gym. They aren't tight fitting at the bottoms, but you might be able to peg them.

I was going to suggest Danskin. I bought a pair of Danskin yoga pants at Walmart last summer. They are the best pair of workout pants I have ever owned. They are capris made with a stretch material. I normally hate stretch pants, but these are so comfortable and look good on. They only cost $11 too. I went back the next week to buy a couple more pair, and they were sold out.:guilty: And I can't find them online.

Just because I have a fat stomach does not mean I have tree trunks for legs. Grrrrr... It's so hard to find pants anymore because the larger the stomach the wider the legs. I don't mind stylish "wide-leg" pants that are meant to be wide-leg style wise, but usually all the plus pants I find have big huge legs and thigh area and I have stick legs and small thighs. It's just my tummy that is a bit large. The shirts never seem to be long enough either. I have a really large chest and after I wash the shirts they shrink up and are too short. I'm 5'9. :)
And I have the opposite problem. I have big thighs. To buy pants large enough to fit my thighs, the waistline is 3-4" bigger than my waist.

Anyway, just to add my vent...really it's a vent about clothes in general, not just plus size. Why can't clothing manufacturers have consistent sizing??? Even within their own brand? I was trying on pants at Old Navy a couple years ago. I tried on a pair of low rise and mid rise pants, same style. I couldn't even get the low rise pants over my thighs.:confused3 And the mid rise fit alright in the thighs, but gaped at the waist and were about 4" too long. Why can't they size women's clothes like they do men's? With actual measurements. It is sooooo frustrating to go clothes shopping with my DH. He doesn't even try the clothes on before he buys them. He just finds his size, buys them and when he puts them on at home, they look and fit great.

I have had good luck lately with the Old Navy plus online. Most of my current closet is from there and Target (when they had a good selection). I shop at Torrid occasionaly when they have a good sale but it is mostly for fun clothes.

I hate that sizing is so different even in the same brand of pants. I have two pairs of the exact same pants except they are different colors, one black and one brown, same exact size and the brown ones are a whole inch bigger in the waist then the black.

My biggest gripes with plus size clothing (especially some cheaper brands) is that tops are soooo loooonnnggg....like I am wearing a dress. And, the armholes on some are so big, especially the sleeveless shirts. Granted, we are a little bigger than a smaller size, but that doesn't mean that my upper arms are as big a small tree trunks!!!!

I have found that (although more expensive) shirts at Talbot's in womens sizes are shorter and more porportioned for us shorter ladies, also, I have great luck with their pants too not have such big waistbands compared to hip measurements. If you are lucky enough to have a Talbot's clearance center close to you, check them out, you can get some nice buys at decent prices. Of course, that is the only way I can afford their clothes.

The town I live in really has no selection in larger clothing, but if I go to the mall 30 mins away (even though it is smaller), their department stores have a better selection. Perhaps it is a supply/demand thing :confused3.

Oh and can I rant about plus size MATERNITY clothing???? Nearly everything is ONLINE! I am wearing this stuff for a short while I do not want to order it have it not fit and send it back!!!!! I found 1 dress my entire pregnancy! Also what is it with skirts? I prefer long skirts and I have big thighs and I do not want to show them off. The only place I have found decent looking long skirts is second hand stores!

Preach it sister!!! You are so not kidding! I was just looking for some stuff at motherhood online tonight and ugh! I did manage to find two Disney maternity tops on mega sale for our trip in February. So cute! They darn well better fit!

Add me to the list of frustrated when it comes to finding clothes.

I have large calves and cankles to boot so I prefer boot cut jeans. I don't like having my lower legs strangled.

As for tops, I don't like having my arms squeezed into the sleeves looking like sausages.

Kycha, I agree with you on the consistent sizing issue. I don't like having to try on everything before I buy it.

For this past Mother's Day my mom had me pick out a few things from the Roaman's catalog. I picked out a pair of capri pants based on my hip size. I tried them on when they came and the dang crotch was halfway to my knees! Also the tops I got make me look like I am pregnant. I like my tops a little loose just not too loose.

Another thing is underwear. I can't find any to fit me right. As soon as I find a style that I like I go back to buy more. Guess what??? They have discontinued that brand. I have to go an hour away to find a store that even really carries some that might fit. I am tired of buying them to have them not fit.

DW used to complain that plus size clothes were ugly and only came in black or gray.

I wish! I like black and gray. It seems that plus size tops these days all have sequins!

I'm top heavy. Size 12-14 on the bottom but a (generous) 18 on the top and a woman of my years wants to de-emphasize the top half not flaunt my 38 DDs. Why are tops all sparkly/patterned/ruffled/low-cut and (for summer) sleeveless. I want solid colors with reasonably modest necklines and sleeves all year round.

I do layer with Ts and cami's (for the sake of those around me who might not want to see my aging chest) but that is too hot in summer.

I wish designers would get their heads in gear and stop designing tops for plus sizes for size 4s -- just larger!

I have come to the conclusion that they believe that because we're heavy, the only good asset we have to flaunt is our "girls". So in their minds they are doing us a favor! "We know how to make them feel sexy and beautiful! We'll help them show off the goods and they will feel great about themselves!"

LOL!

Instead nearly everything I own has a safety pin in the neckline.

Totally!! My "girls" are not that big so I don't use up that extra material that should go to the front of the sleeveless tops...I don't appreciate my bra showing under my armpits!

I have one! Jackets need to come in sizes larger than 3x in smaller towns! We dont have a plus sized store, Jc. Penny's and Yonkers, are our stores in town. My diabetic grandmother needed a new jacket and we were stunned that womens coats dont come in anything larger than a 3x at most chain stores. We got lucky and found a 3x in mens that was larger and fit (and looked feminine enough for grandma). :worship:

I have had this problem. When it comes to maternity I start in an XL and half way through move up to plus size. In some options I start in plus size. The selection that motherhood maternity carries in store is pitiful! And I can't stand buying online to only have to return it. With my last pregnancy I purchased a pair of pants in 1x for work and was swimming in them all because the XL was way too tight. It's like they expect you to have a huge jump in your shape.

I actually have two sweaters from my first pregnancy 6 years ago from Old Navy and while they were huge on me then, they fit just fine today. I have a hard time finding anything in ON maternity sweaters that fits this well today. I did luck out and found a XXL maternity dress on clearance last year for under $5 at ON. It's actually a decent length and fits well.

I gotta agree with the sequins and kitty cat shirts. What is up with that? If I wanted that crap I'd be ordering some Quacker Factory from QVC, lol.
