Vent about Plus size clothing - add yours too!

Tommy Hilfigure (sp?) used to make some great plus size clothing. Macy,s used to carry his line and so did The Boston Store. both of these stores really shrunk their plus size section.

Kohl's sometimes gets decent clothes in but lately it has gone back to very old lady styles. do people really wear kittens, birds and hugE flowers on their clothes?

I actually posted about them earlier. I've been shopping there for the last 8 years or so. Lots of fun things, but sometimes not mature enough for work. I do ahve a few items that I purchased there ages ago that have held up really well over the year :)

Oh I TOTALLY must have missed your post! Thought I had read through them all.

So.. I agree :thumbsup2 And yes.. some of the "work" clothes may be a little too racy for work.. you know.. depending upon one's profession :lmao:

I shop Kohl's. Most of the tops I get aren't too bad, but pants are a pain. The worst is finding exercise clothes. I like Torrid for pants, but they're a bit too expensive for me - especially when I keep telling myself I don't need to spend that much money on jeans when I'm going to lose the weight.

And of course, fat people don't exercise so I don't need exercise clothes that fit my size.

The stupidest thing about all of this is that a huge percentage of Americans are supposedly obese - so where the heck are they all shopping? And why isn't anyone catering to the majority of Americans?

wow I forgot about workout clothes. Why can't I get a decent pair of plain black capri type workout pants, tight fitting so I don't get caught in any equipment. And yes Macy's with Tommy Hillfiger and other brands are very nice but pricey. But they are very well made and will last forever. I have quite a few pieces from there.

No kidding! They used to have holiday plus size shirts and stuff, but not any more. It's like we don't even exist! WTH? As if they're ashamed of having bigger girls shop there.... :rolleyes1

I KNOW!! I worked at target from 01-03 in the fitting room and clothing areas and can I tell you how much of my paycheck went to clothes?! They had great prices and such cute plus sized stuff! Now it's like 1, maybe 2 rows of racks hidden behind all the maternity wear. ***?!

I get my work out clothes at Walmart. I fit into their XL capri's and workout shorts. I think the brand is Just My Size.

I hate admitting this but I like some of the clothes at Walmart, but lately my local Store has shrunk their dept. Luckily they carry size 18 in the women's section

Little historical note: when Irene Sharaff was designing the costumes for the film "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf", one of the tasks she was given was making then size-8 Elizabeth Taylor look fat and blowsy.

In her autobiography, Sharaff explained how she did it: Short jackets with wide necklines and three-quarter sleeves, paired with tight-legged pedal pushers. She said the key was cutting the length of the top at exactly the same height as the end of the sleeve, therefore creating a line all the way across when Taylor stood up with her arms straight down: it added at least 8 inches to the width of her hips.

Just as a general rule, three-quarter sleeves on a blouse are not often flattering for those of us who are fatter, and for just that reason -- they create a really unfortunate horizontal line just at the widest point of the hips. (They are usually fine on a full-length dress, however, as long as it is not a loud pattern.)

I don't know...someone has to be buying it. :confused3

Right?

Kohls is very hit or miss.

Torrid has the type of clothes that you wear to a party or clubbing.

Our Avenue closed a couple years ago. :(

Catherines is all older ladies styles and Lane Bryant is I don't know what.

It's obvious that the buyers for all these stores are not plus size women. :sad2:

It's not just plus size. Buying clothes is hard, especially if your shape is outside the "norm".

A big AMEN to the aging clown/lounge singer gripe! If I wanted to look like I stepped right out of Mama's Family I could walk into Lane Bryant and be all set in 5 minutes.

Also, does everything have to be made out of that super cheap, super sheer fabric that clings to every dimple? I'd like something more robust than tissue paper to wear, thanks.

Why do all the bras have those double wide straps? I might as well just wear orthopedic shoes to bed and complete the look.

hahaha I bought a halter top like this from LB. It's ridiculous. Every summer I bring it out because I paid alot and I like the idea of it. I try putting a sheer top over it. Nope. I look crazy.

Bwahahahahahahaha! Both of these posts made me laugh like a lunatic! :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Don't even get me started on Kohl's! their plus size dept is now practically non-existant! And Forget Clearance plus size clothes!!!

I have been going to the plus size clothing in the Jr's dept. Online with Kohls. I think there buyer went over there. I think we should all email or write to Kohls.

I am only 4'8" tall and plus size. There are NO clothes that fit me and having to have them all altered is just not available to me. It costs so much to get things altered and once buying something I don't have the finances to then add in alterations. So I live with things that are 10 years old. I am so frustrated as I am going on a cruise soon and need clothes. I live in Canada so don't have those shops available to me.

Have you tried Danskin brand from Walmart for workout clothes? They have some capris and yoga pants that I've done well with for going to the gym. They aren't tight fitting at the bottoms, but you might be able to peg them.

I used to wear plus and I had a huge problem with sleeve length. I was 5-5 and I didn't like clothing to touch me so the seams would be halfway down my arms in order to get the looseness in my stomach. So anything major, like a coat or blazer I would have to alter it. I was under the impression that I had really short arms. I altered a lot of clothing.

So I LOVED anything that was 3/4 length it meant that I didn't have to alter it. It was kind of one size fits all.

Then I lost 110 pounds and voila my arms are normal.

I think they do it because it will accommodate everyone.

I feel all of your pain! I couldn't agree with you guys more. I have such a hard time finding plus size clothes that aren't frumpy, ill fitting, and/or way too expensive!

The thing I've had the hardest time finding is a good suit that fits properly. Lots of place sell great suits, but no plus size options! I actually stumbled upon some nice choices at Boscov's a couple weeks ago. I didn't have a chance to look at the entire plus section, but I was able to get a Calvin Klein plus size suit (who knew they made plus size!) at a great price! I was very pleasantly surprised.

With such a large portion of the population falling into the "plus size" category, you'd think we'd have better options!

It's all up to how you view your money. Less than $10 is not cheap to me, especially if I only spent $3 on my jeans. Heck, I own a sewing machine, I could hem them myself but I just want to buy clothes that fit in the first place!

Three dollars? Wow! I've never seen jeans sold for that little. Even our Salvation Army usually marks their second hand jeans at ten to twelve dollars. Tops can be got for around five to seven.

I'd think a thirteen dollar pair of jeans was a bargain, even if ten dollars of that was tailoring. Because now instead of spending three dollars for jeans that don't fit, I'd have got a perfect pair for thirteen. And I'd probably wear them for at least five years, if not longer.

However, I totally agree with wanting to buy clothes that fit in the first place, no matter what size you are!

Just because I have a fat stomach does not mean I have tree trunks for legs. Grrrrr... It's so hard to find pants anymore because the larger the stomach the wider the legs. I don't mind stylish "wide-leg" pants that are meant to be wide-leg style wise, but usually all the plus pants I find have big huge legs and thigh area and I have stick legs and small thighs. It's just my tummy that is a bit large. The shirts never seem to be long enough either. I have a really large chest and after I wash the shirts they shrink up and are too short. I'm 5'9. :)

Oh yeah! On Wednesday all clothes at our Salvation Army are half price. I'd never pay more than $5 a pair. All my favorite jeans are from there, or Goodwill (Goodwill are $4.79 per pair for jeans). I can't even fathom $3 a pair for altering. Alterations in your area must be cheap! The one by my house is $8 a leg! :scared1:

I just bought a gorgeous top at the Salvation Army today for $1.50. It was originally $48 at Lane Bryant! I got a beautiful LONG designer scarf for 99 cents at Goodwill and an awesome fancy satin and laceof type tank to wear under a sweater for New Year's for $2.

That's pretty much how 99% of the stuff in my closet is. :woohoo:

Oh!!! I needed a sweater/sweatshirt/jacket on vacation a couple of weeks ago. I went to Target and tried on - or tried to try on - some xxl items. HA! I filled out a customer response card and included my phone number. No response. I guess it's time to write...

I am not plus-sized (I opened this thread because I love fashion :confused3 :rotfl: ) but I have to agree about the Target sizing. Although I wear a M-L usually, I buy XXL at Target and those shirts are still too tight and clingy most of the time. Crazy!
