My DH went down in lower St Bernard Parish today with another builder, to see about fixing a Chevron facility in Venice. He still can't get over the absolute total devistation everywhere. Everything wiped out....objects hanging in trees 15 feet in the air...debris covering all surfaces. They can't imagine who will be responsible to just clean up the debris-it is that overwhelming!

Venice is about the last town on the Mississippi river, before it drains in the Gulf. When they got there, of course there is no electricity or stores for 30 miles or so. Chevron hired a man with a restaurant on a barge(run by a generator) , to bring it on site &to fix 3 meals a day. Anyone working for them ,even military doing security, is offered a free meal , 3 times a day, with a full selection of drinks . It's the only place to eat for miles around.

My aunt and uncle live there. They stayed with us during the storm and for about 3 weeks afterward. What was funny (not really), was that we were watching the local news about a week after the storm and they were showing the boats that were washed up on the highway and the levees. Well a few miles down from those boats they showed a clip of my aunt and uncles house on another section of highway. It was washed about 5 miles off its' foundation. Weird thing is that their house was built up fairly high too.

My Dh is going to Venice after the new year to rebuild a plant

I was down around cedar grove ?? before Christmas, right before the roadblock, but it didn't look good that far up.

I guess the Venice Inn is gone. It was the hotel, on pilings, had about 100 rooms, up next to the marina. Great base camp for the Redfish.

I use to work at that site. It actually sites outside the levee and at high tide teh water would sometimes come in the parking lot. Use to be good fishing there while waiting for a boat to pick us up
