Vehicle Baricades at WDW service entrances

If you take a Disney Bus to the Animal Kingdom, you will get a Close up view of one of these Gates as the Bus Enters Animal Kingdom. Also at the Magic Kingdom on or near the walkway To/From the Contemporay Resort is another gate.

So that was why there was some construction in the vicinity of the Animal kingdom service entrance back in November.

Security gates would be more effective if they had rails positioned above bumper level so that the vehicle's fender and radiator would start to absorb the impact before the bumper hit.

1. The time of energy absorption is lengthened so the chance of the gate's giving way is less.

2. The gate looks more intimidating which has some deterrent effect.

This is Common Sense.

But isn't this an overreaction? You are at war but with a much, much smaller nation that has comparatively little military capabilities compared to yourselves. The only other 'war' going on is less a war and more of an ongoing struggle - terrorists. As England learnt with the decades of struggle with the IRA, this type of thing just has two effects: minor (VERY minor) reassurance to the public (who will immediately think: but what if a suicide bomber clambered over a fence...) and a minor (VERY minor) deterrent to any troublemakers (who will think: I really, REALLY want to do this, let's climb over a fence...).

The best defence here is intelligence - the only way that England managed to control the number of bombs deep in the underground or in busy areas was to find out about them first and stop them. This DID reassure the public and demoralise the terrorists, even if it didn't really stop them fully.

To be fair it is worth saying that the IRA did always give cryptic warnings as to forthcoming attacks which helped to no end - however they were designed to be damn near impossible to crack, leaving a lot of dead people and the IRA going "We told you so, evil occupiers...".

Hit your enemies in the face and they will bounce back with ferocity (MI5 'Guilty Until Proven Innocent' campaign against the IRA), but cut their legs from under them and they WILL think twice about getting up again (Allied subterfuge and propaganda, end of World War One).

I believe the british held this idea once and got themselves kicked out of the colonies.....America, 1770's

This is another form of warfare,a tactic. And it somewhat levels the playing field. Tactics are just as important as strength. Take the revolutionary war. We fought it differently than you did. Back then it was basicly line up nose to nose and fire on command. We hid behind trees and set up ambushes. When we did line up we fired first at a greater distance because we had rifles with longer barrels and the first rifling. They shot further and a little more accurately. Cornwallace was slow to change.

Another example you will find in WWII, was in the air. Fighters had different characteristics. We fought to the strengths of our equipment,a tactic. Why? it neutralizes the other guys strengths. Also the standing order in the Battle of Britain was go after the bombers and ignore the fighters. Another tactic.

One of the many things we have to do is adjust our tactics to counter their's, and we may be doing that now.

Wars are never simple to fight. And not pretty. Someone always gets hurt.

The best defence here is intelligence -

It will take a little time to bring this one up to speed.

In short, I don't think it is overreaction. It is prudent action.

Enough from this long winded old goat.

This is not an over-reaction..this is simply common sense and smart .

Obviously disney is and will be a target, because of the amount of people in one small area. I am happy to see the disney execs taking this seriously to protect the people who work/visit there.

Thanks disney!

I stand corrected on the reassurance factor - my girlfriend also felt reassured so I guess I'm outnumbered - a happy defeat :)

manning, you'll be annoyed to hear that we British were also bad losers when we lost America - we set fire to the Whitehouse on the way out, hence the distinctive colour - the white is there to cover up all the damage

Worth also mentioning is that the British did at this time have some awful fightng tactics as well as some great ones - mainly bad though ;) Finally, England never declared war on the IRA and still refuses to with the Real IRA - doing so would give them the same attributes as a nation which terrorists are NOT. Surely these dissidents and criminals do not deserve to be labelled as any more than pirates? They do not deserve to be regarded as a group with which we can declare a war and, in theory, a peace.

That's right, and forget Washington DC...we're taking out that crazy mouse all his buddies in Orlando! Give me a break.

Well, there goes that rumor out the window. Something about a British officer falling asleep in bed with a lit cigarette.;) We forgive you.

Declaring war in this case means nothing to these radicals. They care less.

Remember the saying history repeats itself. In a way it is here, only on a grander scale. Back in the 1800's ships were being captured and held for ransom along the north African coast. We finally got fed up with it and sent in the navy and marines. After we bloodied there noses, it stopped. I'm afraid we are going to have to more than bloody these fanantics to get it to stop. It is an unwanted war that has been forced upon us.

Have you noticed the baricades installed exceeds government specs? IMO this is good.

Those nuts over there would be perfectly happy to do both and not surprisingly at the same time. Both are symbols of America, which they hate.

Terrorists use fear and intimidation as a means to change policy or to depreciate faith in a nation's government by the citizens.

The WTC was not a military target. It was selected for it's shock value and to show that they could attack anywhere they wanted to in any way they wanted to.

They would love to target anything that "truly" represents America and American culture.

Oh, and that doesn't mean that they would have to choose WDW over the WH and WDC.

Personally, I think we've disrupted their organization to a point where it's much more difficult for them to hit here. I'm sure they'll make attempts as soon as they're able, though.

There was an al qaeda operative arrested some time ago who had video of Walt Disney World. Apparently he had been casing WDW among other sites. Also last year there was a heightened security alert and the FAA restricted flights in four places: New York, Washington, Orlando and Anaheim.
