veggie items like chili... are veggie!

I was reading on another forum, and someone was talking about how there is nothing for his vegan wife to eat. That even things like the veggie chili has chicken broth.

I asked where he got that info, and he said he was told that by the people at the Boudin bread store (so NOT the restaurant).

And I'm wondering if my fellow veggies (and vegans) have specifically asked and gotten a different answer?

It doesn't seem correct that a huge corporation (like McD's and Pizza Hut, who never even SAID that their fries or veggie lover's pizza were vegetarian before they were sued) would specifically call something a Vegetarian xyz and then do something as incredibly stupid as to put chicken stock in it.

Anyone know something different than what the folks at the Boudin bakery store told someone else?

Updated in this post. :) Yay!

My dh asked for me and he was told the same thing. He actually got into a minor tiff with them over this.

He now understands why I ask before I order anything, and why I specifically ask if it has beef or chicken broth in soups and the like. You'd be amazed at the items that are either marked as veggie that aren't and the odd times I have found that things like marinara sauce are not veggie.

I'm vegan and have food allergies too, I had a birthday cake made for my daughter this april that was ment to be "safe", well thet put honey in it and my wind pipe swelled up, I had trouble breathing.....if it was not for the meds that I carry!!!!!! When my husband took this up with DL the chef said "that american vegans eat honey"!!!!!!!!!!!!
I only go to DL once a year, the first time as there was nothing I could eat I lost a lot of weight, but know, after the cake I do not eat in the parks / hotel at all, I drive to the local Whole Foods Market, where I know the food is safe.

Did he ask at the PW Cafe, or at the Boudin bakery?

If they are doing that, they are up for a lawsuit, just like McD's and Pizza Hut, who didn't even market their stuff as vegetarian.

That said, I do NOT think the chili has chicken stock in it. I have been veggie since I was 20, and I generally can taste the extra 'richness' or I later get sick b/c of it. I have not yet gotten sick, and there's no extra taste to the chili (or the vegetarian gumbo) that I have noticed.

American vegans, lol...

That is really interesting..

I would say call Disney Dining, but who knows if they would know. They would probably assume like me that if it's vegatarian it wouldn't have anything from an animal in it, even in the stock (duh, you would think huh?).

If I were a strict veggie and I ate the chili that had chicken stock in it, I would be one very very PO'd girl.

I really want to know the answer now..

I don't think Dining would know, but I'll probably (later today, still moving-in work to do once I get off my rump) see if there's a way to call City Hall, see if they can send out info on their food. I know someone from another site got a list of the ingredients of the veggie po'boy from them (dangit, it involves ketchup and bbq sauce, which DS can't have b/c of the high fructose corn syrup generally found in those two items!), so it's possible!

I think that everyone has a limit to what they will eat, for various reasons (was just replying on the CB about Anthony Bourdain, and even he has issues with eating certain things sometimes...I even saw an episode where that "I'll eat anything" guy was worried about eating something!), so to find out something has something you can't or don't want to eat in it, especially if it's called by a name that indicates it doesn't, is going to be bad! Food should never have surprise ingredients!

Molly, I believe City Hall does have a book with the recipes to many (not sure if they have it for all) the menu items in the parks. If there is a question regarding a specific menu item that they don't have the recipe for, I'm sure they could connect you with the head chef of that particular restuarant who could give you the answers you are looking for.

Sent a long email through their site. :)

While googling, noticed that McD's got to pay a total of 10 mil to various academic, Hindu, vegetarian, Jewish, Muslim, and Sikh organizations, and that was just for *implying* they weren't putting beef flavorings on their fries (and hash browns, I just found out, AUGH).

Huh. I didn't realize honey was an issue for some vegans - it's not a problem with the ones I know.

Woh, so it did have beef flavoring? I thought i heard after that, they no longer use beef flavorings for fries and hashbrowns? Strict vegans here too... so it would be good to know! Thanks for starting this thread and it's good to know there are others out there as strict as I! I too would like to find out about vegetable items, like kabobs at Bengal BBQ, I am assuming that it is cooked on same grill sometimes mixed about with all the chicken and beef kabobs... any knowers?

Yeah, I think some do and some don't. I traveled to Ecuador with a vegan in a college group, she bought an enormous pot of honey in a town we stopped at. She had been lecturing us on animal rights the whole trip. I said "Do you eat honey?" and she replied "Yes, of course!"... to which I replied, "Don't you care about bee's as well??" Later in the trip she told me my question prompted her to avoid honey as well. She explained that all the vegans she knew ate honey, so she thought nothing of it.

:confused3 I don't know though, I am a carnivore;)

Our past trips, I had to just pack sandwich makings, oatmeal packets, nutrition bars, trail mixes, but sometimes you need real meals! I didnt even think about marinara! or even vegetable chili!
I'm hoping that DL could start accomodating for vegans since it seems more andmore people are becoming food conscious people... I'm fairly new at this vegan stuff as I too loved to eat meat, hamburgers,etc... For me it is all for health reasons tho' still find myself craving red meat! :goodvibes It would be nice to get some ideas...

Absolutely on the fries. Not totally sure on the hashbrowns.

All they did was apologize and throw away 12 mil (the Hindu site I saw only said 10mil, but the lawyer's site said 12, so I'm assuming he got 2mil).

According to what I read, they didn't used to do it when they used animal oil to fry in, but when they switched to veg oil the fries didn't taste right. So they started using a beef-based flavoring, which is allowed to be called "natural flavoring", on the fries to get their famous flavor back. But there was no change made after the lawsuit, but they aren't supposed to turn a blind eye to people obviously trying to eat veggie who are ordering them.

From McD's website:

French Fries:
Potatoes, vegetable oil (canola oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, natural beef flavor [wheat and milk derivatives]*), citric acid (preservative), dextrose, sodium acid pyrophosphate (maintain color), salt..... *CONTAINS: WHEAT AND MILK (Natural beef flavor contains hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk as starting ingredients).

And crud...

Hash Brown:
Potatoes, vegetable oil (canola oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, natural beef flavor [wheat and milk derivatives]*), citric acid (preservative), salt, corn flour, dehydrated potato, dextrose, sodium acid pyrophosphate (maintain color), extractives of black pepper. .... *CONTAINS: WHEAT AND MILK. (Natural beef flavor contains hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk as starting ingredients).

Well especially in California, ya know?

Yes there are still gazillions of omnivores there, but CA has always been very veggie conscious, and you'd really think they would be extremely aware of it.

I always figured that if you're going through the pain of being vegan, you might as well take it seriously enough to not use honey!

I've been vegan for a short period of time, but long enough to show me how allergy-free I could be (and how much thinner I could be), but it's too difficult for me just to give up the danged dairy. Way too addicted.

You know, it is hard for me to imagine that DL doesn't try harder with this issue. :confused3 I grew up in CA and there are lots of health concious people out there and animal rights activists and etc... It really shouldn't be catching DL by surprise....

Of all the companies, you would think that the one in CA would get it and provide full disclosure!

ok im nota viggen or how ever its spelled and nothing im about to say i hope hurts any ones fillings.

I eat meat i see nothing wrong with it. But I do respect others who have chosin not to thats there freedom its why we chose america we have many freedoms.
I would of never known hunny would be a problem I have known many who didnt eat meat. then also some who eat fish. then theres my aunts husbend who dosent eat (pork im think)
But not once have i heard hunny was a problem.

I do think disney should come up with more meals for us all. I have to say I barely find some of the food appealing. I see so many saleds and soups and its like cant i just have some meat potatos corn, fruit. I always trade my soup or saled for fruit.

I am sorry it seems hard to find good veggi options for you I think they need to do a full menu for veggies and emat eaters. I think its grate there trying to go heather but they shouldnt take away some of the meat to add some non meet.. ok idk if that makes since they just need to make it more even and appealing.
(and again i mean no disrespect to any one)

I don't think i'd ever ask anyone to stop eating meat or stop selling it, only hoping for options for others who don't eat it... Maybe GCA seems to have more space in their boardwalk section, that could be a possible vegan restaurant spot?

Jumping into this conversation.

We're visiting DL for the first time (after more visits than we can count to WDW).

What and where can we eat in the two parks? We are lacto ovo and not vegan.

It has from time to time been a huge issue in WDW, though it has been getting easier.

So, any recommendations?

Jade, honey is an issue for vegans b/c it is an animal product. It's made by bees FOR bees (anyone seen Bee Movie? I was surprised my son wanted to eat honey after that movie), and to get it FROM bees you have to smoke 'em out so they don't sting the person getting the honey.

I do eat honey, just as I consume dairy, but I totally understand the reasons why people don't. :)

And Jade, my main reason for posting today is that there are two items on the menus called Vegetarian Chili and Vegetarian Gumbo. The problem is that now two people (unless the PP here has a husband who posted on micechat?) have been told by CMs that the Vegetarian Chili is made with chicken stock. Meaning that it is not in any way, shape, or form, vegetarian. Not even close.

So that's what I'm hoping to find out from Disneyland!
