DD7, DD2 (she will be 3 when we go in January), and I are veg, and DH is non veg. I keep reading not-so-flattering reviews of Rose & Crown, and Biergarten sounds so entertaining for kids. DH would love the food at Biergarten, too. He would like to try either R&C or Biergarten. Can we eat vegetarian at Biergarten? I've looked at the menus on allears.net, and vegetarian and German food do not seem compatible. Thanks for the help!

I am not a vegetarian, in fact I produce organic meat for a living, but because of my organic tendencies, I seldom consume meat that does not come from our farm. With that said, I do not recall any obvious veggie options from Rose & Crown; furthermore, the food I did have was bland and unintersting, but certainly edible. The toffee cake was to die for! I have avoided Beirgarten for the reasons you stated. Seems like the options were spatzel (not a favorite of mine) and saurkraut and that was about it. I know this isn't what you asked about, but Boma is an excellent option for all parties involved.

We haven't done Biergarten, but R&C is not great for vegetarians. GF is veg., and I'm not. When we went there, I think she ordered appetizers as a meal -- if I recall, a cheese plate (which we split), potato leek soup, and some kind of small salad. I don't recall there being any edible-looking entrees on the menu.

The cheese plate was okay, but the worst one we've had at disney (cheeses weren't great, and no crackers/bread served with them). The potato leek soup was okay (had kind of a weird taste, though), and the salad was pretty boring.

I guess with biergarten, you have the benefits of a buffet -- lots of choices, at least some of them probably vegetarian. I think I've heard that there is plenty of veggie stuff to assemble a meal out of, like various salads, breads, potato things, etc.

There is quite a bit of veggie food at Biergarten, just watch out for a couple of the cold salads (the potato salad isn't vegetarian, for example). I was just fine.

Let's see if I can run down the list and mark what I'm pretty sure I remember eating:

Wurst Salad
Macaroni Salad
Carrot Salad with Raisins
Tomato Salad

Andre's Famous German Potato Salad
Cucumber Salad
Bean Salad
Beet Salad

Mixed Greens
with
Creamy Herb Dressing, Tarragon Dressing

Traditional Assorted Sausages

Cold Meat Platter

Sauerbraten *
Salmon

Roasted Chicken
Glazed Carrots
Meatballs

Roasted Pork

Pork Schnitzel
Hunter's Sauce

Roasted Potatoes

German Sausage
Spatzle

Red Wine Sauce
Mustard Sauce

Chicken Soup

Assorted Breads, including Pretzel Bread

Braised Red Cabbage

Desserts, which may include
Apple Strudel, Black Forest Cake, Bavarian Cheesecake,
Linzer Torte

You could also have them whip up something that's not on the menu. I didn't think it was necessary.

R&C, I've never been there, but their vegetarian entrees (they do exist) have been geeting good reviews lately.

So, I'd say pick whichever one would best suit your party.

(I've been out of town and apologize for the slow response.)

Thanks! It sounds like Biergarten will work, so I'll try that. The entertainment sounds fun, and themarquis and Laura made a good point about piecing together a veg meal at a buffet (that seems easy). And JennyDrake - DH really wants to try Jiko, so we are going with that over Boma (I wanted to try either). Thanks again for the input!

Rose and Crown reworked their menu earlier this year and they have several veg options - I recall two appetizers and two entrees. The kitchen will make a veg cottage pie or curried veg even if they are not on the current menu.

Biergarten has a lot of good veg options, including tomato salad, cucumber salad, spelt salad, various green salads, roasted veg, roasted potatoes, breads. While many of the items have been Americanized, it is one of the better German locations I have tried in America. Still not the same as Germany, but a good solid option. I avoided it for years, and wish that I had been dragged there earlier in my WDW history ;)

- bavaria (who only yesterday *sigh* was in bavaria)

oh, and German food and veg food are not exclusive. Although my mother often says 'but what will you EAT?' I can assure you that I am proof that a veggie eats very well in Germany. ;)

I trained in the kitchen and at that time we led a successfully campaign to add veg items to menus. Also there are far fewer food additives than in America, and less 'hidden' meat products. Plus more use of non-animal products like agar agar as a stabilizer or thickener, for instance.

And in Germany I can eat yoghurt, but can't eat it in America as it makes me ill.....

I was going to vote for Rose and Crown. We make a special trip for their veggie curry.

I would chose Biergarten over R&C. The potato leek soup is very good, and if you eat seafood, they usually have salmon or some sort of whitefish everyday. When we ate at R&C in June, they no longer had the Veggie Curry. The only vegetarian option was some sort of Veggie Pot Pie that didn't seem too appetizing.

the veg curry comes and goes on the Rose and Crown menu, but usually if you ask they will make it, or the veg cottage pie

I have had good success eating vegetarian at Biergarten. It is after all a buffet and while it does offer some nice German foods, if you are looking for non-meat and/or non-German, things can be found. We love the entertainment. It really entertained our DS (2).
