Vegetarian on Disney Fantasy

We are lacto-ovo vegetarians also. We are trying late dining this time. One reason is, we are not that fond of the vegetarian options at dinner. So we plan to just enjoy food through out the day and at dinner we will basically do a soup/salad and dessert thing. We wouldn't want to eat a lot at that time of night anyway. In the past, we have rarely had the chance to enjoy the food on the top deck because we are trying to save our appetites for dinner, but this time, that is not going to happen.

Cant comment on Fantasy, but we are just off the dream last month. I am also veggie and I don't like mushrooms. Of course most of the veggie dishes have mushrooms as a base. I told my server this on day one. Day 2 there was nothing that appealed to me so I ordered 2 salads and the soup. The head server, regular server and assistant server did not feel that was appropriate so each brought me something to try. I had 5 plates in front of me at some point! It was hysterical. :rotfl:
So in short, us veggies do not go hungry on a Disney cruise! ;)

I'm vegetarian and fall into the camp that the DCL menus fall far short for me. Unfortunately many of the dishes are mushroom based, which I loathe. What disappointed me on our Magic 2012 sailing, our server did nothing to try and accommodate us. His attitude was either order something off the menu or too bad. Needless to say, he received a less than stellar review/rating. However, on my October 2012 sailing, my server was a bit better in allowing me to have just veggies off of various dishes being served so I was a happy camper for the most part.

And thanks for the tip on the veggie burgers at Tow Mater's! I will definitely give those a try!

Thanks for the clarification on the mushrooms. I am so use to scanning menus for key words and skipping along to the next item when I see meat words that I also didn't read it closely. I have also seen the caviar reference too but couldn't find it again to post. I do remember asking for a 'vegetarian' dish without the oyster sauce on the wonder one time since it was not the fake oyster (mushroom) sauce but i also know a lot of vegetarians that turn a blind eye to oyster sauce. I too have ordered the side accompaniments from different dishes in the past as they looked better than the sides on the vegetarian options. It can be difficult with servers that that to overfeed at times. Once when I ordered a very light menu after a very large late lunch they brought me extra food to try anyway. They were right the extras were delicious but I was nearly bursting after (not good at leaving food on my plate)

However, I think this is also down to a number of people who say they are "vegetarian but eat fish", or "vegetarian but eat chicken"!

Like my SIL who said that she was vegetarian because she only ate fish. And chicken sometimes. And occasionally pepperoni on pizza. And maybe a burger once a year at a summer barbecue. Not sure she really knows the meaning of the word "veg"etarian.

It has lobster in a list of mushrooms. Lobster mushrooms are a fungus. It doesn't mean lobster the animal! :D

I guess that's why I never noticed an ostensibly vegetarian dish that appeared to have seafood in it. As soon as I see the word "mushroom" I tune out.

The only mushroom dish I ever ate that I actually liked was a morel mushroom pasta at Victoria & Albert's which I have to say was delicious. But most places are not up to V&A's standards so I avoid fungi.

I will keep an eye out for caviar in vegetarian dishes however as I am allergic to seafood. Although I've had people tell me before (not on DCL) that "it's not seafood, it's caviar" (and I'm not talking about the fake caviar made from tapioca). I'm pretty sure that fish eggs give birth to fish which were seafood last I checked.

I also do not like mushrooms!!!! Glad to see I am not alone.

Trust me...you are not alone!!!

And be careful with caesar salad. We went to a wedding and I declined the caesar salad being served. The server looked at me funny so I just commented that I am vegetarian. She responded, "oh this is salad, it's vegetarian." I responded that there is caviar in typical caesar dressing. She thought I was nuts and then said, "oh this one is vegetarian." I asked her if she knew that for sure and she said she just figured it probably is. Ummmmm...yeah, still declined.

It's anchovies in Caesar, not caviar. And even if they confirm that there's no actual anchovies used in making the dressing, sometimes people make it with Worcestershire sauce which does have anchovies in it. Also, if you're vegetarian or vegan, it's worth noting that many Caesar dressings are made with eggs.

I have actually been warned by DCL when ordering a Caesar salad that there was anchovies in it. I was fine with it since such a small amount doesn't affect me (tried a slice of pizza once with one on it since I thought I'd be OK because I can eat Casear dressing - that turned out not to be a good idea. Apparently there's a huge difference between a whole anchovy and a little bit in a dressing). If you're vegetarian, or much more sensitive to seafood than I am, you're best to avoid it.
