Vegetarian Meals on DCL

Can anybody tell me what being a vegetarian on a Disney Cruise is like? Being vegetarian in the parks is really hard; we feel ripped off at the buffets, and veggie burgers get old at the quick service restaurants. I am hoping that the chefs on the ships are a bit more creative, since we pay the same amount as meat eating passengers.

DH and I are vegetarian and have been on five Disney cruises. We have never felt ripped off by the vegetarian meals. The best meal for us is always Palo dinner. They always cater to us when we tell them our diet needs and we are always pleased and so very full by the end of dinner. We have not tried Palo brunch but heard it is a lot of seafood. For regular dinner rotation there is always at least 1-2 veg soup or salads, 1-2 veg appetizers and 2 dinner choices and then of course all the desserts to choose from. There is a different menu every night so you are not stuck eating the same dinner every night. The breakfast and lunch buffets always have enough options for us. The poolside quick dining spots have veggie burgers, veggie or cheese pizza, salad and a veggie panini but none of these options are very tasty. Room service is a little sad for vegetarians but I have ordered veggie panini, Mac and cheese and a cheese and cracker tray from there in the past. Hope this helps, let me know if you want more details about anything.

They will cater to your every whim. My wife is almost a vegetarian (she will, on occasion, eat chicken). But they had vegetarian dishes of so many varieties, and they even took requests.

Just talk to your servers, they will take care of you like you are royalty.

We have been on 5 DCL cruises so far, and DCL is doing a much, much better job than they had. I know that makes it sound sort of negative, but what I mean is that once it had taken quite a bit of explaining and now it seems much easier.

Obviously what with 5 cruises we are satisfied.

I really think that DCL has tried to improve and be much more sensitive to vegetarian needs. In recent years, from my experience they will do their utmost to accommodate you. I find that it is best to talk to your head server beforehand to make your needs and preferences known.

Not sure if you are vegan or lacto-ovo but there should be selections on the menu to accommodate you.

The reason I suggest talking to the head server is depending on your needs, you may want to explain how you interpret vegetarian. For us that means no formerly living animal of any kind, including no stock made from any and no cross contamination.

We have had some great meals, especially in Palo. I strongly encourage you to try it.

For breakfast, I recommend going to the sit-down table service restaurant on the ship. The reason I don't recommend the buffet is not because of DCL, but because of the other passengers, who I have seen taking bacon and such and fat dripping into the eggs as it passes over. For that reason we tend to avoid them.

Lunch in the buffets is another matter and very much depends on the theme of the meal. Some offer better choices than others and if you find nothing there to your liking you go the sit-down route as an option.

Always keep in mind that food is a very large part of their product offering.

I hope that helps, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

On our last Disney Cruise (Feb 2011) our 20 yo DD joined us and she is vegetarian but eats cheese and occassionally eggs.
I am sure she would confirm that she NEVER lacked for a variety of delicious food choices. Sometimes the vege choices were better than the carnivore choices :rotfl:
They had multiple mushroom, risoto, pasta, eggplant, legume and tofu-based choices at every meal.
She actually gained weight on the cruise.
You will not be disappointed!

Oh and one more thing, if by any chance you are on the Dream, after a bit of pushing DCL guest services who were hedging and noncommittal, they contacted the chef at Remy's who confirmed that they too will accommodate vegetarians, with a bit of advanced notice.

My kids and I are veggie and ate awesome food on Dcl! Look at the menus on this board to get an idea...that's very helpful.

Thanks for all of the advice; I feel relieved, and even more excited about the cruise than before.

Glad to hear you finally got that question answered!

I've been known to order the vegetarian entree along with my regular entree...especially if it is more vegetable in nature (as opposed to starch), because they never give you enough veggies with the meat entrees. They will also gladly serve side dishes of vegetables (love the grilled asparagus).

I have nothing but good things to say about the vegetarian options and service. They always have an option on the menu every night and others that you can get without meat. If you have any problems your servers will be able to help you. I was always satisfied with the food selection on DCL.

As for quick service - obviously there will be less options they our meat eating cruisers, but there is always something. Veggie burgers, cheese pizza/veggie pizza etc.
