Okay so I'm off to disneyland at the very beginning of December and my Girlfriend is vegetarian, what's the selection of food like in the parks for veggies?

Thanks!

I'm a vegetarian, and I also don't do the "white" stuff (white rice, bread, pasta, sugar). It was tricky to find things to eat, but it was possible. I'd go look at the online menus ahead of time so you can figure out what and where you can find something for your friend. Have fun!!

Almost every counter service place (except Harbour Galley) has at least one vegetarian option. Most will be able to leave off the meat if you ask. As PP said, the veggie option will usually involve bread or it will be a salad. But most counter service is hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, so the omnivores are eating bread too. Also, if you want to know about something, like the beans at Rancho del Zocalo, which are vegetarian, each location has an allergy binder, you can ask to see it to check things like sauces for chicken broth or anything else she doesn't eat, like gelatin.

I have learned from other posters that many of the desserts contain gelatin (mainly in the frosting). So, be sure to ask if desserts are vegetarian or not, too.

I try to avoid white foods too, but can't always do it when traveling.
Here's a list of vegetarian options I've saved from other posts on the DIS:

Disneyland:

- Rancho del Zocalo - Beans, rice, tortillas are vegan-friendly. They have a burrito you can get with veggies, but make sure you ask for no cheese
- Village Haus - Veggie burgers are vegan - no mayo or cheese
- Redd Rocket - Pasta with Tomato-Basil sauce is vegan
- Bengal BBQ - Veggie Kebab
- Gumbo and Chili Bread Bowls are vegan as well
- Blue Bayou - Mushroom entree, though my friend always speaks with the chef to order a Pasta Primavera type food.
fried cheese sticks at the Golden Horseshoe.
The Hungry Bread Restaurant has a good veggie burger which is not on the displayed menu - you just have to ask for it.
There's also a good entree salad with grains at the French Market Restaurant (I think)
Jolly Holiday Bakery - veggie salad with barley and spelt.

DCA:

- Cucina Cucamonga - same as Rancho del Zocalo
- Pacific Wharf Cafe - Chili
- Lucky Fortune Cookery - stir fries with tofu, all sauces except curry sauce are vegan (that's vegetarian)

I'm headed to the parks later this week and I'm going to try to put together and more comprehensive and updated list. I'll upload it when I'm done because I know what a challenge being a vegetarian on vacation can be - especially finding healthy protein sources.

Enjoy!!

You just saved me so much time! I was going to go through all the menus , but you already knew and was kind to list the vegetarian friendly places. Thank you!

sam93 -

You know, I could have sworn that we had a large thread with vegetarian and vegan info in it at some point (we have a Gluten-Free Superthread, so it would make sense to have a vegetarian and vegan thread). I will have to look around and see if I can find it, or see if I was imagining it.:rotfl2:

In the meantime, since you'll be at Disneyland in early December, there could be extra vegetarian holiday meal options for you as well. Be sure to skim -- or have your girlfriend skim -- down this holiday Food/Treats post of the Christmas/Holiday Season Superthread and click on some of the links, as they will guide you to many of the seasonal meals and treats that you might find (such as the "Pumpkin Squash Chowder" at Harbour Galley, for which there is a blog link under the 2012 section, if I am not mistaken). Many (I would even say most) of the items listed in the articles/blogs from previous years are available every year.

A lot of the articles that I linked in that post featured surprising foods shown and mentioned, which I had neither seen nor heard of in the past, along with the expected ones. So it is worthwhile to check them out. I think there are a lot of holiday snack-types of foods that everyone knows of, but I suspect that there are many seasonal meals and menu items at both table service and counter service restaurants that are almost undiscovered treasures -- and some of them have to be vegetarian!

ETA: You may want to also consider visiting Tangaroa Terrace in the Disneyland Hotel, Earl of Sandwich in Downtown Disney, White Water Snacks in the Grand Californian Hotel and the PCH Grill in the Paradise Pier Hotel for additional options!

So you mean that all of them are vegetarian, and most are actually vegan, yes?

There's also the fried green tomato sandwich at Hungry Bear. When it was very first added to the menu, there was a rumor that the sauce wasn't vegetarian (likely had worcestershire sauce in it), but posts on the disney parks blog state clearly shortly after on that it is vegetarian. We love that sandwich.

Also, if you're going to some of the nicer sit-down places, don't be afraid to ask if they can make you something off-menu. Carthay Circle is particularly good about this. Some of the best food I've had at DLR came from just asking if the chef could make me something vegetarian, anything they wanted. I'm not picky so long as there's no meat (Except onions. HATE onions. It's challenging to be a vegetarian who doesn't like onions at Disneyland.), and there have been plenty of times my omnivore friend ends up jealous of what I'm served.

In fact I think that's the only way carthay works for veggies, yes? They want things to be fresh and seasonal, so they just whip something up instead of having a set menu for vegetarians? That's how it was explained to me in the past.

Add Taste Pilots to the list of places where the menu outside doesn't list a veggie burger, but inside there's a sign that says available upon request. Had I read the outside menu by the door I might not have gone in. Village Haus has one too. Tomorrowland Terrace had one, then they replaced it with a portobello sandwich, I'm not sure if they currently have veggie burgers or not.

Also add Coke Corner to the list of places with no vegetarian option. Unless you want the Kids Power Pack. They should test out a veggie dog there.

Actually, the last few times I've been, there has been at least one veggie dish on the menu, but you can still ask to have something made for you. I've had servers point out that they have vegetarian things on the menu, but they've always been understanding when I let them know why I don't want to order it.

If she eats dairy, and is in the mood for something...bad, I suggest the cheese on a stick at The Corn Dog Castle in DCA.
