I know I have seen some talk of this but now that I am back I thought I would give a over view of my experience as a lacto-ovo vegetarian at the food and wine festival. Let me start off by saying at first I was a bit nervous about how much I would be able to eat and if it would be enough but let me tell you I was so pleasantly surprised. I also hate to say we did not get food pictures due to some camera issues so sorry there.
We started the world backwards moving from 28 and ending sort of at 1. We originally planned on eating only main dishes and going back for dessert so some locations may have had a veggy dessert but we did not try them.
Dominican Republic- Pastelon de Platanos Amarillos
This was one of the biggest surprises, I expected it to be overally sweet but it wasn't it was like a casserole with cheese and was so savory and tasty. I believe this was one of our favorites, DH and I both enjoyed it completely
Peru- no veggy food
The New York and California Wine Tasting booth- We did 3 tastes of NY and 1 of CA since we are from CA. DH liked one of the NY wines I didn't care for anything I had. They were all only ok.
Greece- Greek Salad (was told there was no fish in the dressing) and Spanakopita
The greek salad was simple and not memorable at all, except that the pita bread was not very good and a bit hard. The Spanakopita was an excellent size and so tasty I debated going back for another, but this is one of my favorite treats anyway. It was perfectly rich and the fillo was very flakey and nice. I wish I had one right now
Canada- No veggy food, but my meat eating DH said he wished that the soup did not have bacon as he felt it didn't add anything and without it I would have really liked it
We did go back for the ice wine and that was DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
New Zealand- no veggy food we only had wine here, that admitedly wasn't that good, in fact it was one of the worst we had (Villa Maria Cabernet-Merlot)
Great Beers of the World- Bass Ale and some pretzel chips that got shoved into our bag and forgotten until a much later bus ride hehehe!
Iced TeaFusion- Skipped
France- I loved france much more then I hoped! The Quiche was YUMMY!! It was very rich and though I wanted another later that night (I had a serious debate between the spanakopita and quiche) but decided I was to full to try either again but it was that good. The quiche was smooth and nice the crust was not the best I ever had on a quiche but the filling was just so nice, it completely made up for everything. I also have to say it had one of the best pairings of the day with the Chateau Haut-Modain Bordeaux Rouge they matched so perfectly. DH had the escargot which he thought was only ok he thought it had too much bread.
After the booth we had some a delicious glass of wine in the french wine shop, Chateau Tour de Segur St Emilion 2003 it was so lovely. We also went back later that night and had the Pomegranate Kir which was very refreshing and nice and I thought like everything in France a good size for the price. We also had the Grand Marnier Slushy which was just as good as I had heard if not better!
Oklahoma/Three Sisters- No veggy food, the soup is made with chicken stock sadly
DH had the buffalo which we only remembered he had from our receipts it must not have been very memorable for him.
Morrocco- No veggy food at booth
I made the mistake of hitting their cafe though and I have to say DON"T! It was some of the worst I have ever had and I like this kind of food. The hummus was mediocre at best, the bread ok, the tabouleh was ok, but the rest was gross, in fact I forced myself to eat the couscous and tabouleh which I normally love and left most everything on the plate. This was the biggest waste of money all day!!! Do yourself a favor and believe the bad reviews of the Tangeriene Cafe they are all true!
Australia- No veggy food
We had the Wolf Blass Presidents Select Shiraz which wasn't bad. We also did the wine tasting behind the booth some were good some were not but wasn't totally into the service there. I made the mistake of commenting that I probably would have liked the one wine if I had, if I had it before the Wolf Blass Gold Medal Shiraz and the guy nearly jumped down my throat. He was very upset and insisted it was the best wine they had, and I wouldn't like anything and just got a bit mean. The weird part is I didn't even say I didn't like it but he kept insisting I did even when I just told him no I liked it but with it being light and fruity it was not as good as it would have been before I had the bold shiraz. Also only one of the CM's was from Australia and it felt a bit haphazard there.
Japan- Veggy Rolls
I love mushrooms in my veggy rolls and it was very nice to see them in my rolls and even more enjoyable since we ate our rolls (DH had Beef Roll which he thought tasted pretty good) while watching the very entertaining candy lady. If you haven't seen her go do it, it was amazing. I really liked the size of the rolls as well, they were a good deal.
We also ventured into the Japan shop and we are so glad we did because tucked away in the back was a Sake Bar were we met a very sweet woman Seiko. She was lots of fun and served us a very delicious Kaori Umeshu Plum Sake. I loved that they can you a pickled plum with the tasting, which was odd but good and we got to keep the cup which Seiko wrote Happy Birthday to me on and the date. If you like sake go check it out you will have a wonderful time!
USA- Skipped no veggy food and we already did the wine tasting bar at the front
Hops and Barley Market- Skipped no veggy food and we wanted more wine
Poland- Skipped no veggy food
Italy- Insalata Caprese Salad no other veggie food
This booth was one of the biggest disapointments of the day, the wine I wanted to try (and one other) the Moscato D' Asti was sold out (this was at about 4pm
) which was very sad since they said they wouldn't have it back till the following day. We also tried the Caprese salad which was a huge mistake. I normally love Caprese salad but this one was awful! The tomatos were fine but hard to eat with the cheese balls, which were bland, and the basil oil was flavorless. It basically was a tomato, cheese, oil mess. I was sad because I was looking forward to a refreshing little salad and instead I felt like I was eating pure oil and not even a good flavored oil.
Germany- Spaetzle and Creamy Mushroom Raout, SA Prum Riesling Spatlese (DH had the Sausage with tons of Sauerkraut he enjoyed it)
The Spaetzle was unusual and I believe might have been much better earlier in the day as it tasted a bit dried out, especially the spots without the mushroom ragout which was very tasty and nice. This reminded me of childhood, but my childhood spaetzle were much better, but the sauce was better then my childhood sauce. Interesting to try though a bit heavy if we had eaten it earlier in the day. The wine was nice and refreshing.
This is also the point were we called and canceled our Jiko reservations because though I expected to be able to still eat there that night I knew we would never be able to enjoy that meal after all this food!
Turkey- Meze
This was very odd the little salad part was good and refreshing the dip was odd, the bread sadly was the same pita from Greece which I still did not like. I would say it was interesting to try but not really for me. DH liked the olives it came with the best.
South Africa- Skipped no veggy food and admitedly the photos of the dessert did not make me want to try it either.
India- Curried Butternut Squash Soup and Samosa
This booth gets major veggy love as everything they serve is veggy!!!!
This also was the only veggy soup all day, I love butternut squash soup and this was very good. It had a lovely texture and great flavor. The samosa was not as crisp as we are use to and the texture was a bit off, but the flavor was pretty good, though DH thought with the tamarind sauce it tasted more like a dessert. The soup was definetly the winner here.
China- skipped no veggy food
Ireland- We didn't have food here though it seems they have at least one veggy dish, but we did have the Meade Honey Wine which was very good!
Spain- No veggy food skipped
Mexico- no veggy food skipped
Argentina-we may have had a wine here but I think we skipped them, they had no veggy food.
Chile- Mango and Strawberry Fruit salad with Cilantro and Montes Cabernet-Carmenere
I had really looked forward to this salad and had to say I was a bit disapointed. It tasted like the fruit had sat a bit too long and became a mushy it also had no cilantro flavor which was what I really want to taste this for, over all it was sweet and not bad but not the best thing all day. The wine was very nice and one of the better ones we had all day.
Champagne- skipped
This was about the time we went back and got our dessert (two wines and the grand marnier slushy) before racing to get on two rides. It was a long and wonderful day and I have to say I ate better then I had hoped!! I also have to say for the most part I felt that the CM's were better about knowing ingredients of the food then in the past but some still seemed a bit lost.
