Fresh and Frozen only. Why?

#1 because canned veggies generally taste like crap
#2 tons of salt is often added, not healthy
#3 the canning process destroys a lot of the nutrients

The only time I use canned is green beans for the casserole. It doesn't taste the same (or as good) with fresh. But seeing how I only eat the stuff once a year it's no biggie.
This is us. Aside from canned tomatoes, which I rarely use, I only buy green beans for GB casserole. And, unfortunately, for my 18 month old daughter who balks at anything but fresh broccoli, fresh Brussels sprouts, and *sigh* canned green beans. She'd eat a whole can! I buy then 'no salt added', and figure at least she's eating them.

It's a British and sometimes Canadian term for canned. British variations in spelling & terminology sometimes crop up in Cornflake's posts. She is not a native New Yorker, nor is the term "tinned" regional to the city, except by transplanted expats.

I know from other posts that she has visited London England and expressed how much she loved the city. Maybe she just likes to use words etc.. that remind her of her trip, yes. I thought I heard she was from Vermont, but don't remember where I read it.

As for me, I like fresh, but it depends on how the produce looks, otherwise I use frozen. Kidney beans, pinto etc... I use dried or canned. I will use canned corn, and canned tomatoes for sauce. Beets and red cabbage and applesauce are jarred.

I usually do frozen. The only exception is I like canned peas for some reason. Dont know why, I think is because I grew up eating them. Also I only like corn on the cob. I dont like frozen or canned corn if its loose.

Please don't make things up and say them as if they're facts.

It is a britishism, to the poster who asked.

Spin off on the Macaroni and Cheese thread. The note about Green Bean Casserole. Some were complaining about the canned green beans. We always make it with fresh green beans, or frozen, never canned, although the classic recipe calls for canned.

Made me wonder, what kind of veggies do you use in your house, fresh, frozen or canned.

My dad worked in a cannery, so we always had lots of canned fruit and veggies, and DW grew up on Air Force bases were fresh veggies were scarce.
I can eat any type veggie, my wife can not stand fresh or frozen peas, only likes canned.

What about you?

Always fresh except for maybe canned corn once in a while if I'm using it as an ingredient in another recipe.

Fresh or frozen organic. Never canned, way too much sodium.

I am with you on the fresh or frozen organic as that is also what I buy. However I have seen the No Salt added canned veggies. I have only bought the tomatos because that's all I use and they taste fine. I can't comment on the taste of the others as I have not tried them but the argument about too much sodium in canned veggies can be avoided by purchasing the NO Salt variety:thumbsup2

You can also buy No Salt canned beans, again I haven't tried them as I only buy dried but they are available.

Why do you use Britishisms? Don't you live in the City?

I'm curious, do those who never buy canned, not buy canned tomatoes? I can't imagine buying fresh tomatoes all year. And, in the quantities I use! That would be so expensive!

Or, do you buy frozen tomatoes? I've never seen them. Tell me more about frozen tomatoes, please.

My preference is fresh and when that is not available, frozen.

Other than tomatoes and beans, nothing else canned.

I didn't even know some of the veggies listed came in cans. :scared:

I grow tomatoes from mai to october and freeze what we don't eat immediately, the rest I buy fresh at the supermarket. At least over here we get tasty ones during off season, not as tasty as in summer but good enough.
We also use high quantities, approximately 6-8 pounds a week, 1 pound costs about $3.
We save on other things (like housing, car,..) but food, especially fruits and vegetables are a necessity for us, we try to take advantage of promotions but other than that in this case quality is more important for us than price.

I grew up with canned veggies, and generally avoid them now. I still like canned corn over frozen, and I like those little round potatoes. I use tomatos and beans, though I would never use a canned tomato in anything other than a stew or chili. Do people actually use them for things like sandwiches or salads?

The only thing I use them for is chili, soups and an occasional hot dish or sauce.

I do buy canned tomatoes. I don't consider them a vegetable. ;)

We buy canned tomatoes but we do consider them to be vegetables.
We also buy many kinds of pulses (baked beans, kidney beans, butter beans etc) and celery hearts in cans.

I buy no salt added and they are just fine. Just as good for what I use them for and I add my own seasonings, not salt. :)

I do use canned tomatoes (forgot to add those in my pp) but only for soups, chili, pasta sauce and sometimes stews. I have used fire roasted a few times for homemade salsa but not often. I wouldn't use canned tomatoes for salads or sandwiches but I don't eat tomatoes on my sandwiches and I only use cherry or grape tomatoes for my salads. :)

I have also purchased and used artichoke hearts in cans, I actually have 3 cans in my cabinet now because they were on sale and I do like to add them to a few different dishes I make. :)

None of the options really are right for me.

The only canned vegetable we regularly eat is green beans. We eat frozen brocolli, sugar snap peas and corn. Fresh carrots, asparagus, and zucchini. It all depends on the vegetable.

Never heard that term before, had to look it up. You learn something new everyday on the DIS. :thumbsup2

Fresh for me as a child and adult! Though I also buy canned chopped tomatoes & frozen and canned peas as well as fresh.
