Vegan/Vegetarian Restaurant/Dining Help Thread

Hey everyone.

Well I've been back from our two week vacation for two weeks now and I'm sorry I haven't updated my dining report or given you all an update. I was so exhausted after getting home and then we drove to Missouri to take my daughter back to college last weekend and have another trip to the Jersey Shore this weekend. It's just been non-stop and I've been so sleep deprived lately (as well as thinking that I never want to spend a long trip in the car again, lol).

Just a few highlights.

1. I let you all in on a lead for something I had heard was vegan. I didn't want to tell you what it was in case it wasn't true. Well hold on to your hats folks. The lead was true. The Almond Sweet Pretzel at Kringla Bakery in Norway at Epcot is VEGAN!! I confirmed with two chefs (don't ask the girls or boys at the counter - they have absolutely no idea what is in the food and like to make up stuff - like the first girl who told me, yeah I THINK it has eggs and dairy in it. So of course I said could you please get me a manager and chef so I can verify). Two different chefs on two different chefs confirmed there is no dairy or eggs and the only questionable ingredient is the icing that "was made on the same equipment" as. I had two as snack credits while I was there and it was so nice to sit down and order something when my family got something.

2. Chef TJ is amazing!! He made me the most fabulous dinner that had people around me drooling and making comments, including my own family who said next time they are eating there as vegans, lol. My first dish was a trio of appetizers. Hummus w/ homemade chips, 6 mini "egg" rolls and veggie sushi. The next dish was a salad that was wrapped in a zucchini with popcorn and pistachios on top. The dressing, popcorn and pistachios made this salad. It was sweet and salty and so delicious. I ate every bite, but should have saved myself. Next was my main course. This plate was so large and had tofu, fingerling potatoes, and the fried noodles on top.The tofu was incredible. Cooked perfectly with the most flavorable sauce. There were carrots, asparagus, broccolini, grilled romaine lettuce, some sweet raisins and another sauce over the vegetables that was a little different than the sauce on the tofu. I was so stuffed I was killing myself to eat even a portion of this. Then he brought me the dessert which was his tower of pineapple, raspberry sorbet, chocolate toffuti, mango sorbet, divvies cookies, with a chocolate drizzle, raspberries and more cookies and chocolate chips on the botttom. I could barely eat it. Luckily I mostly ate the sorbets and the kids helped me eat the rest. I ate so much that I was physically sick for the next hour. The walk to the car was almost umbearable. I'm just not used to eating that much. It was so much food. Chef TJ does not dissapoint and for dining at a restaurant that is not that vegan friendly, he turns it into a vegan delight.

3. Tusker House - I ended up getting sick Thursday night and Friday during our first full week there. So badly that I stayed in the room the entire day Friday and only ventured out to eat dinner at DTD and then came back that night. By the time we got to Animal Kingdom, I was so tired of eating QS and was really regretting us getting the QSD plan. I told my DH that was the last time we go with the QSDP. I don't mind some, but uggh I was sick of eating it after a while. My day on Thursday I had had the veggie sandwich at DHS. The only real veggie meal at AK is a veggie sandwich and I just couldn't fathom eating that, after getting sick. I decided I'd go to Tusker House by myself while the family ate at Pizzafari (thier favorite place to eat). It was absolutely incredible. To say that I liked it more than Boma (my old favorite) was an understatement. When the chef walked around to show me what I could eat, there was almost more (not quite) that I could eat than I couldn't. I had so much to choose from, I didn't even try evertying I could eat. The food was absolutely incredible. I loved it so much on our second day at AK, I made a reservation and had it for lunch again (by myself again too). The only thing that annoyed me, was the girl at the podium when I walked up the first time. When she saw I was by myself, she said - "You do know it costs $26 to eat here". Umm yes, I can read the sign. That annoyed me a bit, but I just said - Yes I know.

4. Babycakes - OMG yummy! Cupakes are a little drier than normal cupcakes, but they are gluten free so you can't expect it to taste like regular white flour would. The cookie sandwiches were my favorites with the frosting in the middle. Unfortunately, I didn't discover that cookie sandwich till my last night. Loved the pink coconut donut, it was so pretty. The chocolate brownie cupcake was my favorite cupcake (who doesn't love chocolate chips inside the cupcake part) and the frostings were amazing! I never had them melt, but then again I ordered them at night and would take them back to my room.

5. Pop amazed me with a faboulous vegan flatbread pizza. I basically had the idea in my head and helped them by telling them what I wanted them to make. The first chef I worked with was excited to do this for me and even asked if she could put arugala on top with a little vinager. The pizza was fabulous and I had it 2 other times. Chef Ana at the hotel was the third chef I worked with and her pizza was incredible and slightly different than the first one. She even made me a vegan milkshake for my snack credit.

I'll be giving pictures and more info soon. May even be after labor day as I have one more trip back to my daughters college over Labor Day. Just trying to get caught up and get my energy back. All this traveling has made my tired. I haven't been home on the weekend in over a month.

Where did you find Chef TJ?

i'm going over labor day weekend and can't seem to find him...i'd so love to see what everyone has been talking about....please please please..where is he?:flower3:

Hi - He is at 1900 Park Fair at GF. This can change though at anytime. Last year I had dinner reservations at O'Hana only to find out he moved to GF when I checked in at the podium. This year when I checked into the podium I asked and when I heard he was definately there I was so excited.

Does anyone know when Chef TJ works? If you call to make a reservation, will the cast members know? I'm not really that interested in going to 1900 Park Fare (I usually just eat lunch and dinner at the parks), but I really want to have at least one meal prepared by Chef TJ! :yay:

MelanieC,

I was hoping it was the pretzel when you said you had a lead. I'm so thrilled! Yum!

I love Tusker House and we've been sad that we can't seem to get lunch ADRs there for early January.

I'm also super excited that you had a great experience with Chef TJ. He made one of my Boma visits the best vegan meal I've ever had out and we hope he'll still be at 1800 when we go.

Thanks for the updates!

Glad to hear Tusker House was good, I have an ADR there for my next trip.

Also, the rest of my family wants to go to Whispering Canyon. There is no vegetarian option listed on their menu for dinner at all. We will be on the DDP so I can't just order a side salad. For lunch the have a quinoa cake that's offered. Anyone know if I'd be able to get that for dinner? Or is there another option?

This is a delayed reply (I just saw the question,) but the quinoa dish is on the dinner menu at WCC. Or, at least it was when I was there six weeks ago. It was okay; not the best ever but not terrible. (We found the meal to be overall 'meh.') I will say that it was definitely 'different' and not the run-of-mill veg stuff.

That said, we had Chef Eddie and he was WONDERFUL, both the evening we dined there and including a post-departure follow-up the following week due to an allergic reaction (that was completely NOT the fault of the restaurant, brand new allergen, yay. :/)

Just got back and I am happy to say San Angel Hacienda has a Vegetarian menu with 5 options. I don't remember if there was a vegan option but I'm sure they could adapt any of the veggie choices

Would love some help from the experts here. My daughter is allergic to dairy, egg, peanut & treenuts. It's easiest when I explain to people that basically she eats vegan but with a protein. Alot of servers tend to forget that butter/egg based sauces should be included in her allergy (so I explain its like a vegan diet to help them remember, but I don't want to offend any vegans here.)

Lilpooh,

I don't find it offensive, because other people's diets aren't my concern. However, there are some significant problems with using the label "vegan with a protein" for your daughter's situation. First, many people - including servers and chefs - do not know what vegan means. So, saying that does not promise that she won't get dairy and eggs. I've had plenty of servers offer me cheese ravioli or pizza after I've said I'm vegan. Second, with "a protein" could include peanuts, walnuts, and eggs, since all of those are proteins. Protein is a huge category of foods and thus not particularly explanatory. It's like saying "vegetarian with a carbohydrate." Third, it's difficult for vegans to get others to understand what that term means. Every time someone intentionally misuses it (i.e. I hear "I'm vegan but I eat fish and chicken") it makes it harder for people who actually are vegan to use that shorthand to explain the diet.

My recommendation would be to be specific about what she cannot have. If you say "she is allergic to peanuts, treenuts, dairy, and eggs" that is specific and you should be fine at WDW. She will be much safer and it will be less likely to confuse things for the next guest who has a vegan diet.

FWIW...

I have been searching through a good deal of info, so I have most of our ADRs planned (I'm a vegan), but I'm really debating on Grand Floridian Cafe. The restaurant is "so me" :goodvibes with the palm trees, Victorian decor and citrus/Floridan vibe! BUT..the menu doesn't look too promising. My dream would be the strawberry salad, (already on the menu) the orrechettie pasta with a vegan cream sauce and fruit fondue with dark chocolate. Do you think I have a chance with getting this dish? I love all things citrus, strawberry, chocolate and pasta and this would be a great Disney trip closer!:confused3

I'll be watching to see the responses to this. We have ADR's for Grand Floridian Cafe on 9-9 for dinner. I looked at the menu but did not see any vegetarian or vegan items on the menu. Hoping to learn if someone out there has any experiences here.

I have had terrible experiences (2) with the GFC. They seem to pre-make many of their menu items and are totally unable to adapt. Even things like mashed potatoes with cream cheese couldn't be adapted where essentially every other TS had no problem accomodating that request. Many foods also seemed to be cooked in big batches with other foods making things that would normally be ok not ok. I'm not vegan but have food allergies so some vegans might not mind. I was unable to get plain salad greens (all salads were apparently nut contaminated) there even when they had no side items except fries that I could eat. It was so bad it was truly shocking. This dinner came after a similarly awful breakfast that I thought must have been a fluke because I've never had any issues at any other WDW restaurant. If it's not on the menu don't count on getting it at GFC. I basically was offered plain pasta and fries with no dessert. Great use of a DDP credit! They wouldn't even grab prepackaged stuff that I know they carry in their other restaurants and quick serve at GF. This dinner was at about 4pm and there were maybe 2 other tables occupied so not busy at all.

That's so disappointing you had a bad experience! :confused3 Why couldn't they just give you pre-packaged items?? :sad2:

or how difficult is it to prepare an allergy free meal? We do it all the time for a relative who's SEVERELY allergic to peanuts. Sure, it takes some work, but it's worth it.

I'm going to be taking my mom to California Grill in October. I ate there as a vegetarian a couple months ago with no problem but my mom is vegan. Has anyone eaten there as a vegan recently? I emailed the special dining needs email address and they just replied by saying that the restaurant should be able to do something for her but they didn't send a form to fill out or anything. I wasn't sure if I should do anything else or call to get that information added to our ADR?

Thanks for the help!

We've just reteurned from our trip and have eaten some great meals on the DDP. Vegetarian food is fairly easy to find, but most dishes contained cheese/dairy, so definately not vegan.
I'll be posting some pictures and reviews soon (incuding our meal cooked by Chef TJ!)

Thanks to the tips posted on this thread, we were lucky enough to meet Chef TJ and have a meal cooked for us. 1900 Park Fare does not have great veggie food on the buffet, so this really made our night.

Starter: pancake rolls, hummus and crisps, cheese empanadas

Main course: marinated, fried tofu with broccoli and asparagus

Yeah Lisa - So glad you got to have a meal with Chef TJ. He is definately awesome and really should be given his own meat free restaurant. Can you imagine.

California Grill is okay. Just make sure you call and specify one vegetarian guest and one vegetarian guest with dairy and egg allergies.

I find that the chefs at California Grill just give you the vegetarian/vegan sides from the other meals on the menu. It's nice, but not great.

I absolutely LOVE Disney and most of the chefs are really fantastic; however, in my personal experience, they only seem to go above and beyond if you tell them you have an egg and dairy allergy. When my husband and I go, we say we are vegetarian with dairy and egg allergies. They are more willing to work with you then.

I know I've posted a couple of my ADRs before, but now that my trip is much closer, I wanted any opinions on these, since now they are much more less likely to change. I eat vegetarian, though vegan is preferred, (but I can not seem to kick cheese and desserts out of my diet,) but I am trying to go completely vegetarian this time, and last time I ended up eating a lot of seafood.

Anyway, I have; breakfasts at the Wave and Kona, lunches at Mama Melrose's, Via Napoli, and Tusker House, and dinners at Citricos, Wolfgang Puck Cafe, Captain's Grille, and Sci-Fi. Captain's Grille is the only completely new restaurant for me this trip, though I've never been to the Wave before for breakfast, but the rest are all new to me since I've comitted to try and be 100% vegetarian this trip.

Also I don't eat a lot of CS, but I do need a CS somewhere on my MK day for lunch, and also another CS lunch on my last day, which I don't have planned for sure, but I think I'll either be at MK or AK. The only thing I don't want to eat is the hummus and tomato sandwich, which I had last year, and while I loved it, I can make exactly the same thing at home.
