Vegan/Vegetarian Meal Options

By no means am I a vegan/vegetarian, but sometimes prefer a lighter option for in between meals - with that being said -->

Read a post a few months ago where Disney is increasing it's options across the WDW resort to get more vegetarian/vegan friendly options. Has there been any recent news or a way to find what options now exist?

Vegan here and just back from WDW. The vegan options on most menus are designated with a green leaf. WDW uses the term "plant-based," btw.

There are in fact some more options both in the parks and at the resorts--or at least at the resort where I stayed, at AKL. The Mara (the AKL QS) had an entire section of their refrigeration case dedicated to plant-based items.

OP, if you're at a TS restaurant, there are often items that aren't on the menu that they'll make for you, so ask if you want something that you don't see on the menu. The GFC has one plant-based item listed on their menu but in fact there are many things they can make there. I know this because it's one of my go-to spots at WDW.

As a vegetarian, I mainly was stuck with sides/side salads 2 weeks ago. They may be going more plant based, but it is mainly processed crap. I just wanted some real, flavorful, maybe roasted, veggie sides. Everything was bean burgers or Impossible Burgers, etc. I am not about the fake stuff.

I had to get creative for my meals...they still have a lot to learn!

@Minnesota! I'm not sure what exactly is in your "processed crap" or "fake" categories--I mean, you might classify bread and rice as processed crap--but I'll make a couple of suggestions anyway. Feel free to reject them. I'm vegan and don't eat Impossible or Beyond--I can't stand them--and I survive at WDW.

None of the dishes I'm about to recommend at Yak & Yeti, Mama Melrose, and the Grand Floridian Cafe are on the menus of these restaurants. You have to ask to speak to a chef. It's an acceptable, okay thing to do.

Do you just want veggies--raw, roasted, or steamed only--and no rice or pasta or bread? If that's the case, I can recommend Yak & Yeti at DAK. They'll make you a huge steamer of delish steamed veggies. You could add tofu if you'd like, but perhaps that's in your "processed crap" category. You could have the veggies with rice, although maybe you don't eat rice. When I'm there, I get the sweet and sour made with tofu instead of chicken. I'm not suggesting that you get this--I'm just saying it's possible to get it. They also have vegetable lo mein--tell them you're vegetarian and they'll make it with a vegetarian sauce.

You can get pasta with marinara sauce at Mama Melrose. They also make a great vegan salad there. At the Grand Floridian Cafe, they'll make the miso salmon with tofu instead. It comes with rice and green beans. They also make a nice salad there with a delicious vinaigrette.

I usually have one meal at Tusker House, which is a buffet. There are a lot of veggie items there, including really fabulous roasted root vegetables. But it's a very expensive meal, since it's a buffet and has characters. Only you can decide if you want to spend ~$60 on a plate of roasted veggies. They have other vegan items there as well--green beans, usually a dish like collards, veggie curry, salad that you put together yourself, and a couple of different kinds of hummus, for some examples. Fresh fruit for dessert. Probably lots of vegetarian items as well. In general, DAK is a great place for vegan and vegetarian food. There are carts in the park where you can get fresh fruit or veggie munchies.

There are a lot more options for a vegetarian than for a vegan at WDW, since you probably eat eggs and dairy.

At table service restaurants, ask to speak to the chef. Someone will come from the kitchen and discuss all the options. There are usually loads of choices, although there are some restaurants I avoid, like steakhouses, so you have to pick carefully. Looking at menus in advance doesn't always work out, since often there are at least a couple of dishes they'll prepare that aren't listed on their menus.

If you can give other examples of what you'd like to eat, perhaps I could recommend other restaurants and dishes.

There's nothing like a vegan health food restaurant at Disney. Not that I know of. If that's what you're after, consider getting a hotel room--onsite or off--that has a kitchen. Then you could prepare your own meals.
