AllEars has VB opening back up on the 2nd. Guess there wasn't as much damage this time?

I also see the parks are back open tomorrow. Must not be too much damage.

I did see the Living Seas, including Coral Reef will be closed until the 3rd due to the hurricane. I wonder what happened there?

Shan, the following information was taken directly from www.disneyworld.com. Don't know how up to date it is...

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All Walt Disney World® Resort hotels will remain open throughout the storm, with the exception of Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground and Disney's Vero Beach Resort. Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground will re-open for guests on Tuesday, September 28. Disney's Vero Beach Resort will re-open for guests on Saturday, October 2. Guests who have scheduled reservations at either one of these resorts arriving before Tuesday, September 28 are encouraged to call (407) W-DISNEY†.

I would highly doubt the resort will be ready for business so soon. That statement was likely written before any damage assessment was made. From the way it reads, it was even written before the storm.
I doubt DVC management has even seen the property yet, let alone started putting the resort into shape.

But... We can sure hope!

I wondered about that myself...

MG, I thought you were headed to VB or WDW?

I agree totally with Maistre Gracey, probably nothing to be heard till at least tonight or tomorrow.

Now, I've been flipping thru a slideshow on Yahoo news, and these are pictures labelled as 'near Vero Beach'

This one's really bizarre, the above home and the one next to it:

Now this stuff seems to be all over the place, and lots of pictures of one building damaged and one right next to it untouched, so anything is possible at this point. The biggest consensus from the AP/Reuters pics is oceanside got more damage than most places.

Now we wait to hear.

wow, I didn't realize it was like that - one house standing and then the one next to it gone...

It is like tornados? Or just how well the house is built?

allears also reported that VB would be open on the 10th of Sep. That ended up not being the case.

Differences in damage from one house to the other are sometimes caused by differences in construction; however understand that there are often hundreds of small vortexs within a hurricane, sometimes with winds of full tornado strength. During Hurricane Andrew, this phenomena was witnessed on many occassions far from the eyewall of the hurricane. Andrew however, was a category 5 hurricane that destroyed 68,000 homes in one night.

Not yet, but hopefully later in October...
I just wanted to have my back up plan all formulated as to avoid a rush on rooms at WDW.

I notice this morning on the disneyworld.com site that guests with ressies at Vero through October 31 are being asked to cancel, move, or rebook. The site also says that guests are being notified.

This was posted on a thread on the Resorts board. If it's true, it doesn't sound too good.

As a travel agent for a large travel company...

the info we received today from our headquarters said that Disney's Vero Beach Resort will be closed until December 31st.

The Vero Beach/Melbourne/Daytona Beach area was in the right front quadrant of Jeanne and received incredible winds and a huge storm surge.

Many of the resorts in that area are planning on re-opening in February, so it seems that there must be a lot of damage.

Let's hope everyone in the area is ok, and that restorations to the resorts, and especially everyone's homes, goes quickly.

Uh-Oh, that doesn't sound good. :(

Gosh, if the VB resort took that much damage, I can't imagine the damage to private homes in that area! So sad!!!

We just got a call from MS, and I braced myself for the bad news about VBR and called back. I was surprised to hear that they DO plan on opening up again Saturday 10/2/04, and the call only was regarding a wait list match for us.

Miss Jane, can you be more specific as to where you found this info? I looked at the site, but I couldn't find anything about VB. I am sure I just don't know where to look!

Thanx....

The link shows up in a pop-up, so if you have a pop-up blocker you wouldn't be able to find it. Here is a link to the page with the information.

Here's the latest on my end. We are scheduled to meet family members at Vero this coming Sunday.

I received this message this afternoon from my relative who made the ressies ~

"I just talked with Member Services._ They advised that they still plan to honor our Oct. 3 reservation._ They have not been able to get onto the property to assess the damage._ If and when they do, and if they cannot honor our reservation, they will call me._ They will then offer to book us at a different resort or reschedule us for a later time at Vero. . . . Interestingly, they would not talk to you if your reservation was more than 7 days away._"

It' s hard to know just what's going on, but unless we hear otherwise, we'll fly Sunday morning.

I called this morniing as we were scheduled to be at VB in 2 weeks and was told there are no reservations till 11/01/04. So she "cancelled" my ressie but had no cancel #, I'm assuming because in theory they had been wiped from the system but she could still see it under my account. Then I tried to rebook at any other DVC resort and there was nothing, not one room at any resort except for a 1br for 1 night. She put us on the waitlist but I think the chances of 6 more hurricanes coming thru in the next 2 weeks is more likely than getting a room. :( But the thing that bothered me was that until 7 days prior to our arrival only then if they don't get us a match will they release our points from holding. A lot of places now require a non-refundable deposit, esp. for internet specials, with cancellation fees or change fees, so that means we cannot book elsewhere or risk our points status or forfeit a deposit. I know they didn't plan for this and I don't blame anyone for the circumstances, and I was flexible enough as I told her we would move up to 3 resorts in a 7 night period if she could put something together so I don't understand why the penalty.

Goodness. I hope DVC comes out with something more official about the damage as soon as they can access the damage. I think as DVC members we would all like to know.

What will this do to the point system to be closed for that long? What will this do to the dues?
