My husband is giving me for Valentine's Day one of the greatest gifts a wife could wish for, a vasectomy. He even scheduled the appointment and procedure himself without me reminding him to do so. He didn't look at the calendar though and scheduled it for the Thursday before Spring Break. Usually, that's not an issue, but a few days ago he decided that he wanted for us to take a road trip during Spring Break.

I was wondering how long we should wait after the procedure to leave? I know it's considered to be no big deal but I don't want him to be uncomfortable. I left a message with the doctor's nurse but she hasn't called me back yet.

Speaking from experience, as far as I cam remember (it was almost 20 years ago), you might want to give it a day? I mean, basically, I can imagine sitting in a car for a long road trip might get kinda unconformable. If you are taking a cooler, pack a couple ice packs or bags of peas.

He's going to feel like he got kicked pretty hard. It will wear off after a few hours. But like a said, a long road trip could exacerbate it.

After my surgery, I was given a Valium, which knocked me out for a few hours. When I woke up, I used an ice pack for a few hours and just laid around. I was mostly fine by the next morning.

I would wait 2-3 days before taking a trip. The thought of sitting in a car for hours the day after the procedure is not something the doctor would probably advise.
Bags of frozen peas and ice cold beer were the best remedy.:drinking1

It took about 3 days to walk without pain and a week to fully recover. A week to the day I did my first post procedure run. I am not sure I'd want to take a roadtrip right after but I would have survived. I applied ice for those first 3 days.

I wasn't knocked out, just had a local applied, and there were no pain killers prescribed. I was told if I needed it take OTC Advil but I didn't need it.

I find it weird you are calling his doctor to ask these questions. He is having the procedure, he should be asking the questions.

It'S been 20 years sine my DH had his, so things the way they do things might have changed...

For DH they said to stay home and do basically nothing the day of the procedrure, keep ice packs on it. He had the procdeure on a Friday morning.

Doctor said he coudl putz around the house the next day, but not do much. He'D feel fine and think he culd do things, but if he did he'd be back in the officce in pain after---so keep it light. Sunday he could putz a bit more, maybe go grocery shopping if he didn'T try to carry cases of beer, etc.

Monday he was back at work.

Based on that---I'd guess with a Thursday vasectomy, and Friday being quiet at home your husband would be fine to spend Saturday driving to whereever you are going (but not touring)

make sure he goes for the follow up appointment otherwise you may get another surprise gift down the line (i've known 2 couples that got these surprises-in one case it was many years after the fact and it was just pure luck that it didn't happen sooner).

I was back at work at the next day. I was told not to lift anything over 10 pounds for 2 weeks. To be honest it was several months before I felt back to normal, however, it would not have prevented a road trip

Wow I am thinking my friend must be like "ironman" then LOL- I remember taking him on our lunch break from work and he got it done and we both went back to work after it was done!

Everyone's recovery will be different but I would have been fine to take a road trip the next day after mine.

DH had his done in 1999. Two days later we drove to the beach. We had 4 month old twins and a 2.5 year. Our condo was on 2nd floor and we had to lug all luggage and two heavy babies in carseats up the stairs. Then he had to take DS out in the ocean, getting his junk knocked around. Plus he said walking in the sand wasn't pleasant. Then...our minivan broke down on the way home and we had some friends come get us (left van in a shop). We had to walk to a gas station, lugging the 2 babies and 2.5 year old, to get a tow truck and call friends (not sure we had cells back then). Then we had to transfer all luggage and babies/carseats to friend's car. And it was July in NC. Needless to say, it was a memorable trip and his junk was...well...resembling purple grapefruit (in color and size). But if he takes it easier than my DH and barring no issues like we had, just a low key vacay should be fine.

I knew a lady who got that surprise from their 1st post surgical romp.

Mine took an unusually long time to feel better thanks to lots of bruising & twisting during the procedure. Walking was uncomfortable for 10 days, but sitting was not a big deal within 48 hours.

I had the no needle/no scalpel method (you may have seen the billboards in Florida). I had no pain and was back to full activity the next day. The worst part was the doctor espousing his political views during the procedure, and he pretty much had me in a position to agree with anything he wanted to say!

Really? My husband has had 2 surgeries since we've been married. I'm the only one who asked any questions. I don't think it's odd at all.

Lucky you! Wish my DH would gift me that! He refuses to go. And he has no reason not to. I’m mid 40s , he’s mid 50s

I am tempted to cut him off and go off the pill.
