my husband and one of my best friend's husbands are both planning on getting vasectomys soon.

for my dh's, we got a referral from someone we know (actually, my children's pediatrician, of all people, lol), did some research, checked our insurance, and he made the phone call. has his 1st appt next week for the consult, but was told its about a 5 or 10 minute office procedure using local anesthesia, and our insurance covers is completely (yay!). this seems to be on par with experiences of people we know, and from what i have read online.

for my friend, though, it seems totally out of wack. her dh went for his consult last week. his dr. (referred to by his own dr), does them at a hospital, not in his office. there will be a fee for the place where it is being done. and according to what her dh told her, the guy uses a general anesthesia.

in all of my reading, I have never seen where they refer to using a general for a vasectomy. I was really surprised, in fact. but she was adament that that is what they told her husband.

has anybody heard of this? also, aren't most done in the dr.'s office?

not sure if it makes a difference, but we are in MA and they are in FL

Many physicians are not licensed to perform surgery in their offices so they will use the facilities in a hospital operating room, or an outpatient surgical center. That is very normal in our area & has happened to me or my family many times.

My DH did have general anesthesia for his vasectomy HOWEVER he had a hernia repaired at the same time, so I'm sure the general was mostly for that.

Looking back, DH would have preferred that his was done in a hospital with him knocked out. The procedure was done properly, but his local didn't exactly work very well. He felt the whole thing. Unfortunately the Valium they gave him just before DID work. It worked well enough to prevent him from informing the Dr. that he was feeling the pain. :scared:

DH is a big advocate of being unconsious for any surgeries. :rotfl:

(Oh, and after trying to get a severely ingrown toenail fixed a few years later, then some dental work, we realized that apparently local anestetic just doesn't work normally on DH. Takes 2-4 X the amt to numb him up.)

I work in a same day surgery center that performs Vas's. Most of our urologists perform the procedure in the surgery center under a local anesthesia. According to our surgeons, if the guy is a "baby" or asks for it he will use "Mac" anesthesia, which is like a twilight sleep.

General anesthesia is definetly overkill. To be intubated for a 5-10 minute snip snip is ridiculous.

And on another note, my DH had it done under local in a doctors office.

After reading through the posts, I glanced down and totally misread your sig.:lmao:

General anesthesia is overkill. There are risks with general anesthesia...that's what scares me the most about any surgery requiring it.

DH had his vasectomy in the Dr's office with local anesthesia. He was fine, except for the fact that a few days later, he had to run through an airport to catch a plane and split some stitches. (Pretty funny story to hear him tell it.)

The very first cable show I ever watched when we got it installed was a medical show about vasectomies. Interesting procedure to watch :) and really pretty simple.

Reminds me of the SNL skit where "Sean Connery" (Darryl Hammond) was on Jeopardy!.
One of the categories was "The Pen Is Mighter" but he read it wrong, KWIM? Anyone remember that one?

BTW - DH had a vasectomy a few years ago at a urologist's office using local anesthetic.

My husband was at first scheduled for an in office procedure, but they called about a week before and changed it to the hospital.
He did not get general anesthesia, but he did get that twilight thing.
He was totally fine, never even took a Tylenol afterwards or used the bag of frozen peas I had so thoughtfully bought for him,;), so it wasn't that he asked for more than a local, that's just what the urologist did.

With my ex, it was 10 whole minutes in the doctor's office. I had thought he changed his mind. That's all. Just a local, snip and that's it.

My poor DH has 2 vasectomies, because the tubes somehow reconnected or had a bypass somewhere. Both times it was done at the office with valium and a local. The most current method is minimally invasive and shouldn't involve general anesthesia. There are risks with anesthesia that I wouldn't want to take unless it is absolutely necessary. Dh was sore for a day or so, but with lots of ice he was comfortable both times.

LOL-- one of my friends went to the Dr and had it done during his lunch hour and then came back to work!

My husband had his vasectomy about 20 years ago and it was done in the doctor's office with only local anesthesia. As a matter of fact the doctor let me go in and watch. It was very interesting. My husband still complains that it took way too long because I asked too many questions.

Same situation with my husband.

Well, except for the going in and watching part. DH probably wouldn't have been in favor of that. ;)

A "baby" ..... easy for you to say being a girl :scared1:

Thank you for posting this. This is by far my favorite SNL skit. No one I know remembers it. Thinking about makes me laugh so hard I cry. If only they would make a total Jeopardy SNL DVD.

I think the problem is that guys are generally protective of anybody approaching thier 'tackle' with a sharp knife - hence the extra sedation.

girls of course have to deal with episiotomies:laughing:

I heard one story of a chap who was morbidly obese having the surgery in a urologist's office with a GP attending. Well, when approached with a scalpel - he passed out, so one dr had to keep him from rolling off the consult table while the other one went in for the knife work...

But of course, speaking as a girl, I think boys are babies.....
