First of all welcome to our little corner of the world! As for the "Swaps" they fall into a couple of different lines.
First are the true swaps. Someone will post an idea - for instance Girl Scout scrapbooking embellishments, usually with some details like sayings, frames, borders, and so forth. People who are interested "sign up" and either choose or are assigned an item. I participated in this one I'm using as an example and did a poem on a wide border type of item. When you know how many people are participating you have a set amount of time to make that many of the same item. Send all of your items to the swap coordinator, and then she divides them up so everyone gets one of everything and mails them out to all the participants. I haven't participated, or really even looked at the card swaps and such, but imagine they are essentially the same.
Then there are page trades. These are strictly a scarpbooking thing. Interested parties are assigned to a set of trades. The coordinator lets everyone know who they will trade with - usually it isn't the same person so it is kind of a round robin. You select photos for a 2 page layout and send them along with information on type of pages/book you use, a little bit about the situation, etc and the person who receives your photos does the layout minus the journalling which you do when you receive your pages back.
Circle journals are small scrapbooks with a theme that go to every participant in the circle journal group. Each person does a 2 page layout on the theme. I haven't done any of these but was scrapping with wtpclc over the weekend and she was doing one on Disney Giggles. You simply select photos that represent the theme, scrap and journal them. Then the book mails on to the next person.
Finally, although not a swap exactly, there is the monthly challenge. This is a motivator. Anyone and everyone is welcome to sign up for the challenge. Periodically you post how many pages you have completed - including journalling that it will have - for the month. Whoever completes the most pages wins. The hostess for the month sends them a small goodie pack and the winner becomes the challenge host for the following month.
Whew! Any questions?

wow! thanx for the info! and yes, i've got questions...if you don't mind answering...(or anyone else, for that matter...)
for "true swaps"...(girl scout example), you just make like 20 of the same kind, following the theme (girl scout), and at the end, you'll end up w/20 various girl scout items, right? ready made, and ready to put into your scrapbook, or whatever you're making?
for "page trades"...you're just making other people's layout, using other's pictures. and you'll get a layout back, that others have done, using your pictures, right? is this for various "inspiration" type thing? you know, like a "writer's block" kinda situation, where you're looking at your photos, and not really getting ideas on your own, so you seek other's ideas...and they do it for you? while you do theirs, right??
for "circle journal"...not quite sure how this works....i've read your description several times...who ends up w/the circle journal? and you use your own picutres, so it would contain lots of pictures (that are of similar theme), of people you don't know, right?
now for several questions...how is the turn around for the various swaps? a month? and when would be a good time to look for a swap to join? do people usually introduce the swap at the beginning of the month? end of the month? or just anytime randomly?
again, thank you all for your patience, & assistance in this. i really appreciate it!! i'm sure there are more questions, i think...but for now, that's it.
