vanishing perks

Has anyone noticed that perks are dwindling,
. Perks? Plural? No, I haven't noticed it. I've read dozens of posts on the DIS claiming they have, but I don't see it in the real world.

I bet the old timers from OKW have seen alot of previous perks vanish; not to be replaced by equal, or better, perks.
I'll take that bet. How much are you willing to wager :)

Within the past year we have seen two perks vanish. First the spa at SSR and now valet parking. IMHO DVC members should receive additional perks as loyal supporters. It seems to me DVC members are taken for granted.

With the amount of money we invested we certainly deserve something other than the shaft.

Bottom line... you pay more and receive less. Good job Jim Lewis!!

What spa perk? Are you talking about the changing room at the spa? You realize that the spa is privately operated, right? They pay Disney big bucks to lease that location. Should a business be forced to give the use of facilities that they lease to DVC Members for no income?

Timeshare owners are not "investors" in Disney, those are stock holders. Timeshare owners have pre-paid for discounted vacation accommodations. There is a difference.

The perks are nice, but in all fairness they do say not to purchase an interest based on anything but your desire to vacation at your home resort. It's a shame that they (the guides) are allowed to market the perks, but then have the clause listed in the contract. Sort of a "Sub-Prime" strategy.

I agree with the perks disappearing. I am also mad that they are giving free dining plans with the packages they have.

As a DVC member I thinks we should get at least a discount on the dining
plan!!

Why? As a member, you're getting a much better deal than anyone getting a package with Free Dining and a DVC villa. You pay a fraction of the cost of that villa to the general public, enough to buy the dining plan several times over. :confused3

I would say you likely purchased for the wrong reasons, if perk changes led you to sell.

It looks like he's saying that the vanishing perks are just one thing in a long list of reasons.

However, I'm confused by his contradicting signature.

A free dining package requires purchasing a full price room.

Over the length of the contract, DVC is a 65-75% discount on rooms. They should also throw in free or discounted dining? It would be nice, but I don't think we're "owed" a dining plan discount.

I bought and did not know there were any perks--would not have made a difference to me. I take advantage of some of the dinning discounts here and there and if they were not there no big deal. I bought DVC for what it is, a room that is discounted and better not having to watch for special deals...
If Disney and or DVC returns less quality than what the cost is I will simply sell. I do not see this being the case in near future... Disney may be cutting back but they have a long way to go to reach the low level of service recieved at other places...and also a long way to go in the opposite to be a luxury brand but it was intended as such.

The only thing I do not lke is when you call to make a ressie as a DVC member using points, are told the resort is sold out, but I can get the room if I paid cash. THAT MAKES ME ANGRY. If a DVC member wants a room at a DVC resort, and the availability is there, it should be available to us.

There are several ways rooms become available for cash only.

1) A DVC Member has, technically, already obtained the room on points and has traded to the Disney Collection, Concierge Collection or BV Trading Collection. That room then has to be rented for cash to offset the cost of the trade. The solution for this, no trades to non-DVC resorts/ Adv. by Disney or cruises. I think many members may not like that restriction.

2) Rooms is not owned by DVC Members...for instance, at BLT, they have not sold out of points, but the resort is fully operational. If 50% of the points are sold, then 50% of the rooms are available to DVC Members, the other 50%are still owned by DVD/Disney, and they may use them as they wish.

3) Breakage Inventory. If the rooms designated for DVCers are not fully booked by DVC at 60 days out, those rooms are turned over to cash reservations. Income from these rooms offsets our dues under Breakage income. Breakage rooms, if not already rented for cash, can be reclaimed for use on points. However, breakage is likely an extremely small percentage of cash rooms.

4) As in number 2, Disney retains an ownership interest in the DVC Resorts, usually 2% to 5%. These rooms are used to place members if a room reserved by a member has to go out of service for service. If it isn't needed for service, it can be rented for cash...again DVC Membership does not own this room.

So while you may not like seeing cash inventory available while there may be no point inventory, there are legitimate reasons for it.

Some are veering off topic here. Let's make sure we stick to "Perks" for the discussion, please. That would be things such as AP discounts, restaurant discounts, etc. Thank you.

I think Jim Lewis is to blame.

I really wish someone could explain to me how come you can book a two week holiday with free dining, for less than dues for enough points for a two week holiday. and then see the above quoted, plus people paying cro are getting free upgrades to dvc resorts thats what really winds me up. its been posted on the dis about getting free dining + free upgrade to one bedroom dvc villa for $89 a night, our dues would work out for two weeks at at least $154 per night, its no wonder some owners are unhappy.

i look at this way, its a perk. its not good for 40 years.

Despite what you read on the DIS (or what think you read on the DIS) you can't book a two week holiday with free dining, for less than the dues for enough points for a two week holiday. Try it and see if you don't believe me.

I think a certain portion (not all) of the unhappiness comes from reading doom-and-gloom on message boards. The DIS in particular seems prone to histrionics lately. If people are getting bummed out by what the read (as opposed to those who are genuinely being harmed by Disney's policies) I suggest either a different board, or leaving behind DVC message boards altogether.

Since the topic of his thread is ranging from perks, to UK package offers, to availability I'm moving it to the Mousecellaneous Board.

There's no way you can book a two week vacation in a DVC villa, with free dining, for less than the dues on points for that same villa. For example, I stayed in a savannah view studio at AKL in March. In order to get free dining, I would have to pay rack rate at over $400 per night plus tax, and buy a ticket I didn't need, since I have an AP. The dues on the number of points I used for the room came to about $75-80 a night.

Now, if you're talking about a two-week stay at a value with free dining.....sure, that's cheaper. But it's not in any way a valid comparison. It stands to reason that a stay in a deluxe level resort is going to cost more than a value room. And if I wanted to stay in a 260 sq foot motel room with little beds and no balcony, I wouldn't have bought into DVC.

As for the small number of people who got free upgrades to villas, that doesn't affect me at all. CRO often discounts the few DVC villas they have in their inventory. This isn't any different, it's just another form of a discount.

The odds of being one of the lucky few to get that free upgrade are pretty much like the odds of hitting the lottery. I get that huge DVC discount any time I want to book, for the next several decades.
