We (me, DH, and DD(4)) are going to Disney in October. My DH is a deluxe hotel sort but we don't have the budget for that this trip. We were going to book ASMO but I have been reading about renting DVC points. What I am not sure of if that would be better than booking a value or moderate?? The last time we stayed at the Yacht Club (and LOVED it!!) Thanks for any advice!

DVC resort are a timeshare - timeshares don't do housekeeping.

DVC resort do only if you go through CRO and pay twice as much.

I don't like people in my room when I am not there.

Everyone is different.

depends - OKW is the least expensive and it is not walking/boating any parks. there are 4 bus stops at OKW before it can leave to go to the parks.

POP only has one bus stop.

OKW has 2 queen beds - Pop has 2 double beds.

OKW has a nice large bathroom - Pop has a small one.

OKW has a mini kitchennett - Pop does not

I love the lady and tramp and other icons at POP. OKW is rather boring in comparision.

just depends upon what you want.

If you have good memories of the 50, 60, 70, 80 or 90 - I think you would enjoy Pop. It is not a deluxe resort.

OKW use to be one of the best resorts - but lots of the old CM's have left - the new ones are okay - but not the great ones the resort use to have.

lots of DVC members got spoiled - me included

Personally, I will NEVER rent DVC points again. That's just me though.

Guess you have to decide what's more important...

Nicer accomidations or housekeeping.
Do you spend alot of time at the hotel or most of it at the parks?

I love All Star Movies. I think it's a very nice resort. Lots of fun.

Was it just the housekeeping issue?

HI. I would definately go with a DVC rental! They are delux resorts and they are wonderful! We are staying at boardwalk 1 bdrm in Dec and I am soooo excited! You can get a studio for as little as $120 a night. A studio would be plenty big enough for your family. You get a little kitchenette too! Go on over to the DVC boards and ask some questions, look at the rent/trade board. use the point calculator for different resorts. Heads up though, the points go way up for weekend use. Try to keep it to Sun through Thursday and it will be a BARGAIN! :cool1:

First you need to figure out what week and when and then figure out how many points it would take. Then you multiply that by $10 and that is what you'd pay for DVC. It can certainly be a bargain for what you are getting.

If it turns out to be a good deal vs going value, I'd go for it!

Just remember, if you rent points, you are dealing with an individual, not Disney. If anything goes wrong, you may have no recourse. You might not be able to alter or cancel your vacation without losing your deposit. The owner may want full payment up front. It takes a lot of trust - both by the member and the renter - to rent DVC points.

You can request and receive daily housekeeping at DVC resorts if you are staying on points. It does cost extra. I think for a studio it is about $25 per day for daily housekeeping. When staying on points you do get trash and towel service on the 4th day of your stay.

We had a great experience renting points off the dis boards.
It's the best way to stay at a delux you may not normally be able to afford. We got a 2 bedroom at OKW for $1200
When our family goes on Vacation we have to rent a condo or house. DH does not like to be crammed into 1 hotel room. He likes to be able to stay up and watch tv or read or just hang out when the kids go to bed. Imposible to do in a regular hotel room!
Renting points is the only way we could afford it.
Last time we stayed at AKL. He hung out on the balconly looking at the animals till he was ready for bed so it worked but he said he would have been happier at OKW.
This time DH isn't going so we're staying at POP. The kids have been wanting to stay at one of the values forever. We're really looking forward to it.
If you want luxury though, you can afford it with DVC points!

I rented points from a diser 1 month ago it was the best!!!!
i had a studio prefered view at the BWV 5 nights for 115.00
a night, because of the higher points on fri sat night i stayed at the swan
with a internet special of 180.00 a night club level for 2 nights.I could never stay in a value our kids are teens and love the boardwalk area and it seems to me people with younger kids tend to gravitate toward the value hotels.I would rent points again but hopefully i wont need to because when i got back home from this great trip I bought into DVC myself(as long as it passes FROR from disney).Oh i was given housekeeping service on the wednesday
of my stay i also saw the maid in the hall and got some clean towels on friday they are more than happy to help

Our last 2 trips have been with rented points. Both times at BWV which we LOVE LOVE LOVE. The first time was a studio and just a few weeks ago was a 1 bedroom. Both times we got amazing deals from members who's points were expiring and they needed to get rid of them. Works for us because we can wait until last minute to book being in Florida already. We got 3 nights in the studio for $200 total and 2 nights in the 1 bedroom for $200 total. Can't beat that for deluxe! For such a short stay, we didn't mind not getting housekeeping at all.

We rented points last Oct on the DisBoards. It was the same price for a studio as getting a moderate with a fridge (before they were free). We loved staying at BCV. We had plenty of room, plus the added benefit of a small fridge and freezer. I would check on how much it would cost and compare it to a similar reservations at All-Stars. This is the only way we could afford to stay at Deluxe resort.

Thanks for all the great posts! I don't mind not having houskeeping and my DD keeps talking about the pool with the sand. (SAB) So I think we are leaning towards trying to rent! :flower:

One more vote for renting points at a DVC resort. Be warned, though-- we did this in 2002 and became DVC members while we were down there! We own at BCV. Have also rented points to others with no problems-- it is a nice way to get a beautiful resort for less money, and walking into Epcot from BCV is awesome.

1st off, you are kind of comparing apples to oranges here.

Since you're talking about staying at either a value or a DVC - they are totally separate ends of the spectrum. If you stay at a value you'll get daily housekeeping BUTyou also get a smaller room, smaller beds,no kitchenette (assuming you're comparing the value room to a DVC studio),no balcony. You also do not get waterslides or hot tubs at the pools,or a sit down resturaunt in the value resorts. You do not get room service or valet parking (not all DVC's get these like OKW, but some do). And none of the values are within walking distance to a park...some DVC's are and some are not but at value NONE are. Now, as far as the OP's question:
What I am not sure of if that would be better than booking a value or moderate?? The last time we stayed at the Yacht Club (and LOVED it!!)
Would you be better off than a value resort, IMO YES DEFINETLY! As the values won't have any of the extra ammenites except for daily housekeeping. As for better than a moderate, if your heart is set on YC for instance than it's a matter of how dissapointed will you be if you're at a moderate instead? If not, the moderates will have alot of the extra's like waterslides and hot tubs at the pools and sit down resturants. So you'd need to decide if that would work for you or not. If you definetly want to stay deluxe though, rent the points as it's more affordable. Just make sure renting points is something you're comfortable with as there are trust issues involved on both ends as deb & bill mentioned. If you can find the right person to rent from though and you really want to stay deluxe, it's the most affordable option.

And as for the no daily housekeeping issue when staying on points...there are pro's and con's to it. If you're in a 1bdrm villa or larger, you'll have a washer & dryer right in the villa. It's very easy to just throw the towels in the wash before leaving for a park in the morning and into the dryer when you get back and you don't have the maids banging on the door in the morning to get in to clean. Only downfall really is making the beds. If you're in a studio, no you don't have the w/d right in the room but they are throughout the resort and free of charge, you just need to bring detergent or get some in the gift shop. At OKW, the w/d's are by the pools and it's very convenient to throw the towels in while at the pool swimming;)not so easy if at some of the DVC's like BCV's as they're on the 4th floor, but still free of charge. But if towels are your only issue you can also either purchase an extra towel pack for $6 ( costs less than a drink at the poolbar) or you can also pay for extra Trash-n-towel service which is less than the price of extra daily cleanings and gives you the fresh towels.

Anyway...just some things to think about:wave:

I've rented points from a DVC member whose points were expiring for our family's first trip to WDW from june 4th to June 11th for a studio at OKW. (We already have our confirmation) It ended up being cheaper than the rack rate at the value resorts. I don't mind not having housekeeping for the week...heck I don't have it all year at home...and we're SOOO excited about getting to stay onsite!! So far it's been a great experience...the only drawback is...THE WAIT 'TIL JUNE IS KILLIN' US!! :rotfl:

Couple of questions about renting...

With a family of five, kids 13,12 and 4 can I rent a studio or do I have to go bigger?

How much more do the points go up on weekend?

I've been to the dvc board, but am still confused on this.

Our trip covers a sat. thru friday, if that helps

Thanks

Michele

Link to DVC info including Points Charts

You are only suppose to have 4 in a studio AND a one bedroom at the DVC resorts.

The points almost double on Friday and Saturday nights.

It also depends on what time of the year you go too.

So, I figured, I would need a 2 bed villa during dream season, for seven nights at bwv it would be 286 points :confused3

AT 10 a point that's $2860, compared to a $150 a night at por.

I guess no deal for me.

Sorry PolyAddict...My family and I were able to adjust our travel times to a cheaper season (and resort). Our first choice was spring break, checked the points..nope... Our second choice was the last weekend in May (labor day weekend..doh)...Nope...third choice....1st week of June..WOO HOO!!...Jack pot... Also, we are driving down, so our first night is being spent offsite. We aren't getting to FL until around 9 pm on Saturday so we didn't want to "waste" our points on a day when all we were going to use the hotel for was sleeping! We can check into OKW on Sunday and check out on Friday and only use one costly weekend day. Also, we were able to find a trustworthy member who was selling for only $9 per point because they were going to expire soon. This brought the cost down too. SO...to make a long story short...renting points might not work for you THIS trip to WDW...but maybe you could keep it in mind for your NEXT trip to WDW.

::yes:: I agree. It may not work this trip because of when you are going and that you are going on a Fri and a Sat but it could work someday in the future.

Also, you must remember you are getting ALOT more for your money compared to POR. You will have a two bedroom villa with a washer and dryer, kitchen and whirlpool and at least two, sometimes 3 balconies. It amazing!

But I agree that $2860 is high!
