We didn't even get our kids passports until after our final payment was due and we checked in online. I selected the option for government issue ID when checking in and updated with our passport numbers later. So they would have no idea if I even had a passport.
I did the same as above for my sister on a cruise we went on a couple of weeks ago. She finally got her passport renewed and I added the info a couple of weeks before the cruise to the check in info, no problems.
It needs to be valid at the time you are sailing. Depending on where you are going, it may need to be good for 6 months after you're in that countries port.
I had one last year that wasn't valid I did online check in on the old one just updating the expiry date then sent it off for renewal and on return updated the online check in.
One year we renewed our passports well after PIF date. I just filled in gibberish for the passport information on the on-line check in and updated it when we got the new ones.
